“If we’re talking about Pokémon—!”
“Then Pokémon Hunters are villains who use illegal methods to capture Pokémon and sell them for profit!” Pearl declared dramatically.
Diamond: “That’s terrifying!”
“To sneak into the world of Pokémon Hunters—if we’re discovered, we’re doomed.”
“What?! That sounds way too dangerous!”
“If that happens, even Chatot and Munchlax might get captured and sold off!” Pearl pulled a horrified face.
Diamond lunged at Munchlax “Nooo! If anyone’s getting sold, let it be me!”
Platinum: “…”
Watching the two spin their own skit without prompting, she turned toward August, baffled.
She really couldn’t see what kind of “potential” these two had.
“Ahem…” August cleared his throat, cutting them off. “Let’s talk about your employment benefits.”
He pulled out the two remaining Poké Balls and Pokédexes from Professor Rowan.
“Chimchar and Turtwig—Sinnoh’s starter Pokémon.”
The moment the two saw the Pokémon, their attention shifted instantly.
They hesitated between them briefly before deciding quickly.
Pearl, full of energy, chose the fiery Chimchar, while Diamond, who looked like he couldn’t be bothered, gravitated to the slow and easygoing Turtwig.
“You should all be aware—our next mission is to infiltrate Hunter J’s crew under disguise. But with your current strength, there’s no way you’ll be ready.”
“Which is why... starting now, I’ll be training you during our journey to Hearthome.”
“Training?!”
All three—Platinum included—straightened up with determination.
“That’s right, training.” August nodded. “Under my guidance, you’ll become trainers capable of handling missions on your own.”
“And your first task…”
“Is to eliminate the Team Galactic presence lurking around the TV station.”
At this, Pearl and Diamond exchanged a glance.
“Speaking of Team Galactic…”
“Speaking of Team Galactic!”
August and Platinum: “…”
Are they always like this?
...
On a quiet street in northern Jubilife City, a Team Galactic grunt strolled past, clutching a Poké Ball.
As he passed a patch of tall grass—
A Chatot suddenly burst from it!
Before the grunt could react—
“Chatot, [Chatter]!”
A flurry of nonsense words erupted into sound waves, slamming into the unsuspecting grunt and leaving his face twisted with confusion.
Groaning under the audio assault, the grunt tried to raise his Poké Ball—
But before he could—
Another shadow leapt from the grass.
It was a plump Starly, normally skittish, but now brimming with courage. It struck like lightning at the grunt’s Poké Ball hand.
“Starly, [Thief]!”
The disoriented grunt cried out in pain and dropped his Poké Ball.
Swoosh!
Starly soared up with it clutched in its talons.
“Give that back!”
The grunt lunged after it.
But then—a third shadow lunged from the grass.
Again?!
The grunt’s panicked mind registered the thought—he reached for his backup Pokémon—
Only to be flattened by the full weight of Munchlax.
BAM!
The world went dark.
Crunch—
Munchlax bit clean through a berry.
Then swallowed the rest in one gulp.
It rummaged for more from the fur around its neck when—
“Diamond! Stop eating and get Munchlax to drag the guy in already!” came Pearl’s voice from the bushes.
“Ah—right!”
After a bit of flailing and fumbling, they finally dragged the unconscious grunt into the grass, just before passersby arrived.
They tied him up, gagged him, and sighed with relief.
“Won’t this make us look like the villains?” Platinum asked, heart pounding.
They had just attacked a trainer, after all.
It was her first time doing something like this—equal parts anxiety and adrenaline coursing through her.
Diamond and Pearl nodded. They felt the same unease.
Just then, August’s voice called out behind them:
“No need to worry. We’re International Police—we have law enforcement authority. Team Galactic are fugitives wanted by the League. That means we’re authorized to use force as we see fit.”
“Mr. August!”
The three turned.
August approached, holding four ice creams.
He handed them out, tossed a few energy cubes to their Pokémon, and smiled. “You did great. I saw your teamwork—very impressive. That’s Lesson One complete.”
“Next—Lesson Two.”
He roused the bound grunt.
The moment he saw the four of them, the grunt’s eyes widened. Realizing he’d been caught, he began struggling violently.
August didn’t react. He just turned to the trio and said:
“Lesson Two—Interrogation.”
He nodded at Gardevoir.
With a wave of her hand, psychic energy surged forward.
The struggling stopped instantly.
“I ask, you answer. Okay?”
...
Once August had gotten the information he wanted, he had Gardevoir knock the grunt out again.
The whole process was swift and seamless—leaving all three trainees speechless.
“Well?” August asked, grinning. “Did you memorize the procedure?”
Pearl: “Yes, sir!”
Platinum hesitated. “...I remember half.”
“I didn’t remember any of it…” Diamond said honestly.
The other two turned toward him.
Pearl covered his face with one hand. He knew Diamond would be like this…
August chuckled and didn’t push it. “That’s fine. Methods are just tools. What matters is extracting intel.”
“For example, I just learned that Team Galactic plans to attack Jubilife TV. They’re going to hijack the broadcast to spread their ideology. Thoughts?”
“That’s Lesson Three.”
The three fell into thought.
“Report it to Officer Jenny?” Platinum suggested. “Let her deal with it?”
August nodded but said nothing, turning to the boys.
Pearl rubbed his chin. “Fighting Galactic is the League’s job. Jubilife’s close to Oreburgh City—maybe get their Gym Leader to help?”
Now only Diamond remained.
He chomped down half his cone, clutching his head as the brain freeze hit. “Obviously—we go beat up Galactic ourselves!”
At that, Platinum and Pearl blinked.
Of course! They had August.
Platinum blushed, ashamed that she’d forgotten. She’d just seen him take down a whole Hunter Association on his own!
August, still smiling, summed up their answers:
“Pearl and Platinum—both good ideas. I do plan to contact Officer Jenny and Roark from Oreburgh.”
“But not to ask for help.”
“What then?”
Diamond, ever the helpful straight man, asked the question on cue.
August grinned. “We’re going to return a prisoner to Team Galactic.”
...
In a warehouse next to the TV station—
A squad of Galactic grunts were gathering under their team leader.
“We’ve scouted Jubilife TV for the past week!”
“There are no Gym Trainers in town, and Officer Jenny can’t stop us! Today, we take the station and broadcast our message to all of Sinnoh—no, the world!”
Cheers erupted.
Many had joined Galactic because of Cyrus’s dream to “create a perfect new world.”
They didn’t really understand what that meant… but they cheered anyway.
The squad leader was about to continue when—
“Excuse me—this the Team Galactic meeting spot?”
The shouting stopped. All eyes turned.
At the entrance stood a young man with a shiny Gardevoir, a refined-looking girl, and two... comedians?
Floating beside them—an unconscious grunt.
August smiled. “Found this guy on the road. He yours?”
“Take them down!”
The leader moved fast, hurling a Poké Ball—
But August was faster.
Snap!
Gardevoir raised her hands.
A surge of psychic power swept the room.
Over half the grunts collapsed instantly.
Only a dozen or so remained standing.
August clicked his tongue. “Stronger than those Hunters. Not bad.”
The leader, face pale, barked “Attack! All of you!”
He stood behind a Houndoom—a Dark/Fire type, immune to Psychic.
That’s how he’d tanked the first wave.
The remaining grunts followed, launching a barrage of attacks:
[Poison Stings], [Sludge Bombs], [Flamethrowers]...
Pearl and Diamond panicked, instinctively trying to dodge.
Only Platinum stood calm, fully confident in August.
Gardevoir asked silently whether to counter.
August shook his head—and sent out his second Pokémon.
POOF!
A Milotic materialized, tail lashing.
A rush of water surged forward, neutralizing the incoming attacks.
Steam rose, surrounding Milotic in a glowing mist.
Its scales shimmered like a rainbow.
“So beautiful…”
Platinum’s eyes sparkled. This… This was her dream Pokémon.
And Pearl and Diamond?
Watching August calmly fend off the whole enemy force, they finally realized—
They had joined something amazing.
With morale surging, they joined the fight.
“Chatot, [Echoed Voice]!”
Flames shot from Chatot’s beak, knocking a Murkrow from the sky.
“Munchlax, [Body Slam]!”
The chubby Pokémon leapt and crushed a Golbat with a resounding thud.
“SCREE!”
The Golbat wailed.
Even their starters joined in, supporting their older teammates.
Platinum looked at her eager Piplup, clenched her fists—
“Go, Piplup! Use [Bubble Beam]!”
“Piplup!”
With a joyful cry, it dove into battle.
...
The fight didn’t last long.
It was just a field squad under a mid-level officer—not even a warmup for August.
Had he fought alone, he could’ve wrapped it up in five minutes.
But this was for their training.
Looking at the scattered grunts and his tired, but excited team, August smiled.
“That was Lesson Four.”
“Training—complete.”
“Next—Hunter J, Cyrus… and Dialga and Palkia.”
“...Huh?”
The trio stiffened.
Galactic leader. Dialga. Palkia.
Even if they didn’t know exactly what Dialga and Palkia were...
If they were ranked after the leader, they had to be worse.
Were they... really ready for this?
