Pokémon: My Titles Know No Limits! [298]

"Director of the Kanto Division?!"

The astonishment on Anabel’s face was impossible to miss.

Part of it was due to the shock of August, the Kanto division head, suddenly showing up in Sinnoh.

The other part… was because of who he was.

Maybe the average citizen had never heard his name, but within the International Police, August was already something of a legend.

Singlehandedly rebuilding a collapsed division. Defeating Giovanni, the boss of Team Rocket. Fastest promotion in agency history. Rumored involvement in the crisis that nearly consumed Hoenn…

If anyone else had said they were going to wipe out Team Galactic and rescue the captured Sinnoh agents, it would’ve sounded like empty bragging.

But if August said it?

Then it was already as good as done.

Just like Looker, Anabel placed immense faith in him.

...

Pokémon Hunter Association

Though it had the words “Pokémon” and “Association” in its name, the Pokémon Hunter Association was anything but legitimate.

Back when August was still a forest ranger, he’d tangled with them plenty.

Their primary business? Acting as a broker. They matched buyers’ requests with contracted Pokémon hunters, taking commissions like some black-market middleman.

“Bold of them to be so blatant…”

August stood with Platinum at the location Anabel had given them.

Out in the middle of nowhere stood a flashy building marked “Pokémon Club.” Completely out of place, like it was daring someone to raid it.

Since August’s name carried quite the infamy in hunter circles, he pulled out a rarely used face-shifting mask.

With a quick swipe across his face, his features morphed into those of a hunter he’d once met in Kanto.

Platinum’s eyes went wide in astonishment.

Instant disguise… So this is what being a secret agent is like!

After finishing the transformation, August turned to her, stroking his chin.

“Your family name’s too well known, Platinum. If any of these gutless bugs spot you, they might get suspicious.”

She blinked in confusion.

What was he implying?

Then she saw August pull out a cosmetic kit, smiling warmly at her.

“Time for a little disguise!”

...

Ten minutes later.

August cleared his throat, turning his head modestly away. “Alright. Done.”

Platinum reached for her mirror.

But August quickly stopped her.

“No need to check. Time’s tight, let’s not waste any. We’ve got to move.”

Platinum hesitated briefly, then nodded and followed him toward the building.

...

Though the Hunter Association’s building was brazenly placed, its internal security was thorough.

To an ordinary visitor, it might pass as a simple social club for trainers.

August strolled in calmly, approaching the front desk and knocking twice.

He pulled out a badge—etched with a distinct pattern—and set it on the counter.

“Show me in.”

The receptionist didn’t even flinch.

After checking the badge’s authenticity, she scanned August with a device. Once his credentials were verified, she offered a smile.

“Congratulations, Mr. Tas, on making it out of Kanto’s hellhole and arriving in the promised land—Sinnoh.”

She handed him a room key.

But when her eyes fell on Platinum, she paused for a beat too long.

Platinum’s heart skipped a beat. Did she see through me?!

Fortunately, her upbringing kicked in—she kept calm, masking her nerves and calmly withstood the receptionist’s scrutiny.

Seeing the receptionist’s odd stare linger, August tugged Platinum into the elevator and subtly tapped Mew, invisible on his shoulder.

Mew~

He triggered a relay through Mew’s telepathy.

[GardevoirBestGirl]: "Don’t panic."

[Platinum]: "What… is this?"

Her face showed surprise—this was her first time experiencing telepathic communication.

[GardevoirBestGirl]: "I’m speaking to you mentally. If you want to respond, just use this link."

Fascinated, Platinum experimented, even adding a username like August had.

[Platinum]: "Mr. August, that woman just now said you 'escaped from Kanto’s hell and made it to Sinnoh’s paradise'… What does that mean?"

[GardevoirBestGirl]: "Oh, that… Well, you see, about 90% of Pokémon hunters in Kanto have been arrested. Those who go there almost never come back. So in hunter circles, Kanto is known as ‘Hell.’"

[Platinum]: "Then… wait, don’t tell me…"

August knew what she was thinking and confirmed it without hesitation.

[GardevoirBestGirl]: "Yep. That’s me!"

[Platinum]: !?

She was still reeling when—

Ding.

The elevator doors opened.

What greeted them was a rowdy underground lounge—a bar filled with Pokémon hunters.

Some sat at the bar, nursing drinks. Others crowded around the center ring where a Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan were sparring.

The air was loud, chaotic—and entirely new to Platinum.

She’d grown up with a strict and refined upbringing. This place made her feel… like she was doing something bad.

But deep down, in the shadows of that guilt, she also felt a flicker of rebellious excitement.

Is this what freedom feels like?

As she processed her emotions, she watched August wave casually to the Machamp-backed bouncer at the door, then approach the bar.

He took a seat and said, “One cocktail. And for my companion, a juice.”

The bartender gave Platinum a second glance, lingering a beat too long.

But August coughed deliberately, and the man quickly looked away, preparing her juice and August’s drink.

August asked, tone casual, “Anything big going on in Sinnoh lately? I just fled from Kanto.”

The moment he said “Kanto,” the entire bar turned their heads.

Expressions of admiration lit up the room.

“Escaped from Kanto? That’s wild!”

“I heard even J’s crew got wrecked over there.”

“Forget it, that place’s a hunter graveyard!”

While the others gushed, the bartender set August’s drink down. “Oh, there’s been plenty happening here lately.”

“But as far as things relevant to us hunters, two big developments.”

“What are they?” August asked.

“First—Team Galactic’s offering bounties. They’re recruiting for a project to capture the legendary lake guardians. They got roughed up by the League recently, but last week they deployed Darkrai—so it might be worth looking into.”

August’s brow twitched. “And the second?”

“Also Galactic-related. The infamous Hunter J is recruiting people too. She’s teaming up with Galactic to catch the lake trio.”

“Big job, big team, big rewards. If you’re looking for work, I’d say join J’s crew. More protection than going solo.”

August gave him a suspicious look. “You’re talking J up a lot. She paying you or something?”

The bartender stiffened.

The surrounding hunters broke into laughter, teasing the flustered man until he flushed red.

Just then, a man stepped up beside August.

“Kid—take my advice. You won’t regret joining Lady J’s crew!”

August turned to him. “You one of hers?”

“Damn right!” The man puffed out his chest with pride.

The bartender, regaining composure, confirmed his identity with a nod.

August clapped his hands. “Well, that’s perfect!”

The two froze.

But before they could react, August flicked a Pokéball into the air.

Bang.

In a flash of white light, a Gardevoir with shimmering blue hair and a flowing white dress materialized, floating above the bar.

She gazed down at the roomful of stunned hunters.

August snapped his fingers.

“Take them out—everyone except our proud ‘J crew’ friend here.”

Before his words fully landed, a crushing wave of psychic power exploded from Gardevoir, slamming every hunter to the floor.

[Psychic Terrain]

Many hunters didn’t even have time to release their Pokémon before they blacked out.

A few sharp ones managed to react quickly—sending out Dark-, Psychic-, or Steel-types to resist the pressure.

But Gardevoir only lifted a hand.

A moonlit glow filled the room.

Then—

BOOM.

[Moonblast] exploded across the bar, knocking out the remaining resistance.

In moments, only a stunned Hitmonlee, a dazed Hitmonchan, the bartender, the terrified “J crew” man, August, and Platinum were left standing.

The bartender and J’s man were frozen in fear.

Seeing the gleaming, floating shiny Gardevoir, one terrifying realization clicked in the man’s head.

“You… You’re the demon from Kanto!”

Their comrades had fallen to August back in Kanto. He’d warned them he’d come to settle scores.

They just hadn’t thought he meant it.

Now he was here.

The man struggled to flee—but Gardevoir’s telekinesis had already pinned him. No matter how he squirmed, his body stayed glued to the chair.

August ignored him and took a sip of his cocktail—then spat it out.

“God, this is awful. That’s a first.”

The bartender was still in shock. But upon hearing the criticism, he instinctively reached under the bar for the alarm.

He hesitated—then looked into August’s calm eyes.

He slowly retracted his hand.

August smiled. “I like smart people.”

Then he asked, “Tell me—why is J recruiting now?”

...

Ten minutes later, August had wrung every bit of intel he needed from the still-unnamed bartender and “J crew” guy.

Gardevoir promptly hypnotized the two of them, leaving them slumped over the counter.

August tapped his chin, thinking.

Turns out the real reason J was hiring wasn’t to build a larger coalition for negotiations with Team Galactic, as the bartender had initially claimed.

No.

It was because she’d gotten ambushed by Galactic during a prior job.

She was forced to cover their retreat, and most of her team got captured.

Now she was desperate to rebuild.

That was why she’d sent scouts here, to the Association.

As for her whereabouts?

All the man could tell was that J was currently operating somewhere near Mt. Coronet.

“Mt. Coronet…”

That covered half of Sinnoh. If they tried to search the whole mountain, they’d be looking for months.

So—

August pulled out his communicator, activated the voice modulator, and mimicked the man’s tone.

“Lady J, I’ve recruited a top-tier new asset!”

Playback sounded nearly identical.

He nodded with satisfaction. Good enough to fool her.

Only then did he realize Platinum had gone quiet for a while.

He turned—and saw her holding a mirror, staring blankly at her reflection.

Her face… was covered in blotchy, haphazard makeup.

She looked at August.

Now she understood why everyone had stared at her earlier.

August cleared his throat. “Look on the bright side. No one figured out you were the Berlitz family’s heiress. So… I’d say the disguise worked?”

“…”

Feeling her silent glare, August quickly changed the subject.

“We’ve still got guards to deal with. We can’t let any news leak.”

...

Finishing off the last few guards took little effort.

Gardevoir took down a Skuntank with a Moonblast, and Platinum managed to command Piplup to defeat the receptionist and her Luxio.

Piplup, bruised but beaming, proudly stood atop the fainted Luxio.

Once everyone was tied up and stashed inside, August and Platinum opened the Hunters’ storage vault.

Rows upon rows of Poké Balls gleamed in the dim light.

Farther back, caged Pokémon glared warily at August as he entered the room.
