Pokémon: My Titles Know No Limits! [305]
Added 2025-05-09 13:00:27 +0000 UTCAboard the airship, August led Gary and the others to a chamber, threw open the door, and declared:
“New recruits! From this moment on, you’re my subordinates!”
"There’s no one else around… do you really need to be this in-character?" Gary sent through telepathy, deadpan.
August’s eyes narrowed. “What’s that, newbie? Got a problem with your superior?”
Gary: “…”
The urge to snark was almost overwhelming.
But outwardly, he gave a straight-laced reply: “None at all, sir. Please continue…”
He knew August far too well. You never give him an opening.
Satisfied, August nodded. “As per Pokémon Hunter tradition, all new members must choose a codename!”
“Codename?” the others echoed, puzzled.
“That’s right!” August pointed to himself. “Mine is ‘Raven’!”
“Now, I know you all probably have naming anxiety, so I’ve gone ahead and prepared yours for you.”
We do not!
Alarms went off in Gary’s head. From experience, August’s naming sense could never be trusted.
He turned to see Platinum, Pearl, and Diamond nodding innocently, clearly unaware of the trap. Gary sighed internally.
So young. Still haven’t seen the real him yet.
When August pointed at Gary, he closed his eyes, bracing himself for whatever horror awaited.
But to his surprise—
“Your codename is Green.”
…What?
Gary blinked. That was… normal?
Since when does August give out names that aren’t jokes?
As he stood stunned, August continued.
“To you, Platinum—your codename is Dawn.”
Then to Diamond: “You’re Barry.”
And finally, to Pearl: “You’re Jun.”
Everyone turned the names over in their minds. Something about them felt vaguely odd, though they couldn’t quite place why.
Especially Gary, who muttered Green… Green… and felt an inexplicable boost in confidence.
Seeing that everyone seemed satisfied, August moved on. “Now then—let’s talk about your mission.”
With all eyes on him, August smirked.
“Our task is simple: make sure everyone on this ship understands the true depth of Lady J’s sacrifices, her noble patience, and the cunning plan she’s harboring to betray Team Galactic!”
---
In the repair facility, along a corridor near the break area—
A lone Pokémon Hunter passed through when a hand suddenly grabbed his arm.
“Brother! Have a moment to learn the truth behind Lady J’s actions?”
Startled, the hunter stared at the spiky-haired kid in front of him.
“…The truth?”
“That’s right!” the spiky-head nodded earnestly, shoving a flyer into his hands.
He glanced at it. In huge red text across the top:
“Team Galactic Has Gone Too Far — Lady J’s Secret Struggle: A Revealing Lecture.”
Below that, a smaller subtitle read: Presented by Raven, Lady J’s Loyal Subordinate!
Raven? Since when did that guy become a keynote speaker?
Still, he had actually been sent by Lady J to evaluate the “rumors” of this lecture. He hadn’t expected to be pulled in this directly.
Grabbing the kid by the collar, he asked, “Where’s the lecture happening?”
“I’m not ‘hey,’ I’m Green,” Gary corrected him. Then he pointed. “Straight down, second door on the right. Better hurry or you’ll miss a seat.”
The hunter—codename Sanma—hurried off.
Gary shook his head, pulled out another flyer, and set off to find his next target.
...
Sanma followed the directions and arrived at the lecture venue.
Even before entering, he could hear a booming voice:
“Many of you may have wondered: after being betrayed by Team Galactic, did Lady J, the great Pokémon Hunter, just swallow it quietly?”
His curiosity piqued, Sanma pushed open the door.
The room was packed. Not only were all the seats filled, but people had dragged in stools to sit against the walls, listening with rapt attention.
His noisy entrance drew a round of annoyed glares.
Sanma flinched—only to see Raven, the speaker, flash a warm smile.
“A new brother joins us! No need to blame him. Please, find a seat.”
The tension dissolved. Gratefully, Sanma slipped into a corner and sat, feeling an odd fondness for the man on stage.
August resumed, “As I was saying—Lady J was not content with what happened.”
“But faced with Galactic’s power, she chose to bide her time and endure!”
A hand went up in the crowd.
“Yes, brother? A question?”
“If Team Galactic is that strong, and Lady J’s just enduring… doesn’t that mean we’ll never get revenge?”
“No!” August shook his head. “You’ve misunderstood. It’s because revenge is possible that Lady J chose to endure!”
“You’ve all heard she accepted another mission from Galactic recently, right?”
The room nodded.
That announcement had stirred plenty of controversy—but given Lady J’s reputation (and the hefty reward), most had held their tongues.
Now, it seemed, there was more to the story.
August smiled knowingly. “Exactly what you’re thinking. After deep reflection, I realized the truth: Lady J took this mission to strike back.”
“Last time, Galactic tried to capture the Lake Trio and were thwarted by the League. This time, they’ll definitely try again.”
“And that—” August paused for effect, “—is the moment Lady J has been waiting for!”
“She’s been enduring humiliation for this chance to stab them in the back!”
“When the battle between Galactic and the League reaches its peak, we—her loyal crew—will flip the table, steal the Lake Trio right out from under Galactic, and keep them for ourselves.”
“We’ll have our revenge, capture legendary Pokémon, and still collect our Galactic paycheck.”
“Three birds, one stone. Clap if you understand!”
Clap clap clap clap—!
Thunderous applause filled the room.
Even Sanma, swept up in the energy, joined in enthusiastically—completely forgetting his original mission to assess potential risk.
Of course, in Hunter J’s own base, there was no hiding this operation from her for long.
She’d sent multiple subordinates to the lecture to find out what was so compelling.
Four of them came back completely converted.
The fifth finally managed to explain what was being said.
After hearing it, Hunter J nearly exploded.
When the hell did I ever say I was going to screw over Team Galactic?! Or steal the Lake Trio?! Or—“three birds, one stone”?
She was furious.
She wanted nothing more than to unleash her Salamence and incinerate Raven with a [Dragon Pulse].
But she held herself back.
For one, Raven’s words had already turned the majority of her crew into believers. Even some of her oldest, most loyal agents were now enthusiastic followers of his rhetoric.
If she punished him now, morale would plummet.
With the operation alongside Team Galactic fast approaching, she couldn’t afford the chaos.
Second—though she didn’t want to admit it—part of what he said… resonated.
Galactic had treated her like a disposable pawn. Sure, they’d paid well, and officially the matter was “settled”—but deep down, it still stung.
Maybe letting him rile up the crew isn’t such a bad thing… Let Galactic see I’m not to be trifled with.
As for whether letting this continue might get out of hand…
Even if a conflict broke out, Hunter J was confident in her ability to suppress it.
She’d built her name over years of hard-earned success.
She could control a few rowdy subordinates.
After all, Raven was loyal to her, wasn’t he?
With that thought, Hunter J finally let go of her last hesitation.
---
Another lecture concluded.
As the reluctant audience filed out, August slumped in a chair and cracked open a bottle of water.
“How many was that?”
Platinum: “That was the seventh batch…”
August did a quick calculation. “So we’ve reached over seventy percent coverage.”
Platinum nodded, but she looked unconvinced. “Is this really going to work?”
She had listened to the lectures too. While August’s rhetoric clearly influenced the Pokémon Hunters, she couldn’t shake the doubt:
Wouldn’t they still need Hunter J’s command before acting against Galactic?
August shook his head. “You don’t get it.”
“If the will of the people reaches a certain threshold, not even Hunter J can control them with reputation alone.”
“She might suppress most of them—but all it takes is one or two extremists acting alone. If they move first, Galactic retaliates even slightly…”
“The whole situation could spiral out of control.”
Gary snorted. “Let me guess. The ‘extremist’ you’re talking about is you?”
“Green, how could you say that? Do I look like the type?” August asked innocently.
“…Heh.”
Even just being called by his codename, Gary could hear the smugness dripping from August’s tone.
“Of course,” August added, “if Hunter J really does manage to suppress everyone, we can always… help move things along.”
Gary gave him a knew it look.
“When do we deploy?” Pearl asked.
He glanced at Diamond, who was still scarfing down rice balls like there was no tomorrow.
“Soon, I think…” August said.
Right on cue, the ship’s intercom buzzed to life.
“All personnel, prepare your Pokémon and return to your stations. Airship will depart in ten minutes.”
“Perfect.” August stood. “Green, Dawn, Jun, Barry—let’s move!”
Everyone else: “…”
In the forest near Mt. Coronet, the rooftop of a hidden factory opened.
The airship lifted slowly into the sky.
---
Back in Hearthome City, Cynthia, flanked by her Garchomp and a squad of League Trainers, received a message on her comm device.
She opened it.
[GardevoirBestGirl]: Hunter J has departed. You’re clear to begin.
Cynthia snapped the device shut, raised her arm, and gave the order:
“Move out. Wipe out Team Galactic’s stronghold in Hearthome.”
“Yes, ma’am!”
The League Trainers surged forward—target: Galactic HQ, Hearthome Branch.
---
Elsewhere—
Koga received a message as well.
[GardevoirBestGirl]: Target is Lake Acuity.
A grin spread across Koga’s face.
He turned to Lorelei. “Galactic and J are on the move. Target’s Acuity.”
Lorelei: “Let’s go!”
They both summoned their flying Pokémon and took off.
Just as they did, Koga’s communicator chimed again.
Thinking it was urgent intel, he checked—
[GardevoirBestGirl]: When the fighting starts, don’t damage my airship. If you break it, we’re done.
[Koga]: …August has an airship?
For a second, his brain froze.
Then it clicked—he meant Hunter J’s.
His mouth twitched.
[Koga]: You sure that’s yours?
[GardevoirBestGirl]: You got a problem with that?
[Koga]: …Nope. Whatever makes you happy.
