"On the third day of school, I invited you to have lunch with me. Before I could even finish my sentence, you—this damned, stuck-up woman—completely ignored me and just walked away."
"During our first swimming class, I invited you to come play in the water, but you—this insufferable b*tch—said it was childish. I wanted to slap you right then and there."
"And don’t even get me started on how I invited you to the class gathering—"
Kushida Kikyo stood in front of Horikita Suzune, venting all her pent-up grievances. Her honeyed voice, usually so sweet and charming, now spat words with the force of a machine gun, as if determined to return every bit of frustration she had ever suffered at Horikita’s hands.
The problem?
Horikita Suzune had absolutely no memory of any of this.
Sitting with her arms wrapped around her knees, she turned to Uesugi Gen, who was seated beside her, and lowered her voice.
"Is she always like this?"
"Uh… more or less," Uesugi replied, equally hushed.
"Your class is full of geniuses who treat her like a living garbage disposal for their emotional baggage. No wonder she’s under so much pressure."
Horikita sighed, rubbing her temple. "I figured she wasn’t as sweet and kind as she pretends to be, but I never expected this level of contrast."
This was the first time she had encountered someone who could talk nonstop for twenty minutes without repeating herself—all while insulting her.
"Just let her finish," Uesugi said with a hint of schadenfreude.
"She’s not usually like this, but you happen to be the one person she hates most. Of course she’s going to go all out."
Horikita had a bad feeling about this.
"How much longer?" she asked, glancing at Kushida, who showed no signs of slowing down.
Uesugi rubbed his chin, estimating her remaining energy. Then, he casually handed her a cup of tea.
"Uh… judging by her current pace? Probably another hour and a half."
Horikita: "…"
"I’m leaving."
She had no intention of wasting ninety minutes of her life on this nonsense.
"Wait, no!"
Uesugi clung to her wrist, pleading dramatically.
"If you leave now, she’s going to double her attacks on me! Have mercy!"
"You two—"
A chilling voice interrupted them.
Kushida Kikyo was now glaring at them, tea in hand, her expression unreadable.
"W-We were listening!" Uesugi blurted out, dropping to his knees in a flawless display of groveling.
"Please, continue where you left off!"
Kushida narrowed her eyes.
"Where was I?"
"Day one of the uninhabited island exam—Horikita accepted the role of class leader."
Uesugi answered without hesitation.
He knew from experience—if he got it wrong, the real Kushida would show up in 0.5 seconds.
Kushida smirked.
"Good. You pass."
Then, she resumed her rant.
Once the storm had settled, Uesugi turned back to Horikita.
"I still don’t get how you put up with her."
Horikita massaged her forehead, exasperated.
"And why do you?"
"Because," Uesugi said, grinning, "how else was I supposed to get information on your class?"
He leaned in, his eyes gleaming mischievously.
"You know, the first time I heard your name was from her. I thought you were some kind of eight-armed demon."
"You’re the demon here!"
Horikita shot him a glare, giving him a light kick. Then, hesitating for a moment, she asked softly,
"And… after that?"
"After that, she told me all about your ridiculous antics in Class D. How you spent the first day giving everyone the cold shoulder. How your face twisted in disbelief when you found out you were placed in Class D. How you actually marched up to question why you were put there in the first place."
"…!"
"And then?"
A frigid voice cut in.
"Then…"
Uesugi turned to meet her gaze, his voice turning unexpectedly gentle.
"I met you."
Horikita froze.
Has it really been that long?
Their first meeting—back in the faculty office. She had approached him first.
Her cheeks burned slightly.
Now that she thought about it… every time she crossed paths with this guy, he always managed to catch her at her most embarrassing moments.
And most of them were his fault.
Her expression darkened. She shot him a pointed glare, her fist clenching.
You deserve a beating.
Uesugi immediately threw his hands up in surrender.
At some point, Kushida finally exhausted her supply of complaints.
"Alright, shouldn’t you be leaving now?"
The moment her focus shifted, she aimed her attack at Uesugi.
"Huh? Can’t I stay a little longer?"
"No. Get out."
Kushida sneered.
She knew his tricks all too well.
If he stayed past eleven, he’d find some excuse to claim it was "too late to leave" and try to stay overnight.
Not a problem on a normal day.
But Horikita Suzune was here.
She didn’t care if Uesugi spent the night somewhere else.
But she absolutely would not allow him to head straight to Horikita’s room instead.
"Out. Now."
With that, she shoved him toward the door, ignoring his feeble protests, and slammed it shut.
Once Uesugi was gone, only two people remained.
Horikita turned to Kushida.
"Alright. What’s the real reason you kept me here?"
If she had no ulterior motive, she would have kicked both of them out.
"…Tch."
Kushida clicked her tongue in irritation.
"I hate how you always act like you know everything. That’s exactly why I can’t stand you."
Horikita sighed.
"And I don’t understand why you waste time pretending to be nice to people you don’t even like."
The room fell into silence.
Horikita & Kushida:
Yeah. We really don’t get along.
Horikita turned toward the door.
"If you don’t have anything to say, I’m leaving."
"Ichinose Honami."
Kushida finally spoke.
At that name, Horikita halted.
"That woman," Kushida said, her voice bitter, "is probably the one he cares about most."
Ichinose Honami.
The school’s golden girl and the one rumored to be Uesugi’s girlfriend.
Neither of them had ever asked Uesugi directly about it.
But both had known the truth all along.
"I made a deal with him that night," Kushida admitted.
"It was right after you pissed me off."
Horikita twitched.
You came to me. That’s on you.
"Even though I despise you, I have to admit—you were the student I watched most closely in our class. And the same goes for him…"
Kushida’s expression darkened.
"But Ichinose Honami was the one he paid the most attention to."
Her lips twisted bitterly.
"He even helped me deal with you because he couldn’t get through to her."
"And somehow, those two ended up together."
She clenched her fists.
We were supposed to take down our enemies together.
And this bastard goes and falls for his.
"So what does this have to do with me?" Horikita asked, keeping her tone neutral.
Kushida scoffed.
"Don’t play dumb. You wouldn’t have come to me for help if you didn’t care about him."
Horikita fell silent.
After a long pause, she finally spoke.
"If there’s something I want… I’ll take it myself."
Kushida sneered.
"You won’t win against her."
She slumped slightly, muttering under her breath.
"Not that I can either…"
After a moment, she clenched her fists again and turned to Horikita.
"Fine. I hate your guts, but we’re in the same class. If I couldn’t get you expelled, I sure as hell can’t get rid of her."
She extended her hand.
"Let’s take out the competition first. Then we’ll settle things between us. Winner takes him."
Horikita stared at her for a long moment.
Then, she clasped Kushida’s hand.
"This time… I won’t lose him again."
