Pokémon: My Titles Know No Limits! [308]

Sird hadn’t left. She’d been there the entire time.

Of course she knew—now was the moment she was supposed to act.

But when she looked at the “Pokémon Hunters” currently battling against Team Galactic…

A red-haired youth with a calm, composed expression, commanding a Feraligatr to push Saturn into a steady retreat;

A spiky-haired teen standing behind his Nidoking, wielding Ground-type moves with a presence reminiscent of Giovanni himself;

A Psychic floating mid-air, effortlessly locking down a Galactic grunt with telekinesis;

A brown-haired girl smiling sweetly while directing her Blastoise to mercilessly mow down one enemy Pokémon after another—

Each time she spotted another person, Sird’s eyelid twitched involuntarily.

Giovanni’s son, Silver; Indigo League Champion Gary; former Rocket Executive Sabrina; and August’s secretary, Blue… and that was just the ones she recognized.

These guys are supposed to be Hunter J’s subordinates?

This is clearly August’s entire Kanto branch on a team-building retreat!

And that’s not even mentioning the two women standing in the back, flanked by a Garchomp and a Jynx.

If she wasn’t mistaken, those were none other than Sinnoh Champion Cynthia and Elite Four member Lorelei.

Especially Lorelei—Sird had clashed with that woman for years. Even across an entire dimension, she could still catch a whiff of Lorelei’s familiar aura.

“Heh~”

At this moment, Sird couldn’t be more grateful for her own caution. Hiding in the Distortion World using Darkrai’s power had been a smart move.

Otherwise, her fate wouldn’t have been any better than the poor bastards currently getting ganged up on.

But soon, something else came to mind…

If these Pokémon Hunters are August’s people, then the one trading with Cyrus—Hunter J—could she actually be...

A strange glint flickered in Sird’s eyes. She ordered Darkrai to fly her toward the spot in the Distortion World that corresponded with Spear Pillar.

---

Spear Pillar

August was facing off with Cyrus.

To be more precise, he was standing on top of the device restraining Mesprit and Azelf, taunting Cyrus—who, wary of damaging the machine, didn’t dare order another [Magnet Bomb] strike.

August: “Come at me then!”

Cyrus: “Get off that thing!”

“What, scared?”

“Come down!”

August smirked, full of ridicule. “And you think you’re gonna remake the world like that?”

Hearing August mock his dream, Cyrus finally snapped.

“Take him down!”

Magnezone launched a wave of electromagnetic interference to try and paralyze August and Salamence, while Probopass fired a beam of brown energy at him.

Even now, August noticed, Cyrus was still taking care to avoid damaging the device beneath his feet.

He really was... August almost felt moved by the guy’s consistency.

But sentiment didn’t get in the way of battle.

He knew even with his genius-level command, Salamence—with its type disadvantage—couldn’t hold up against Cyrus’s team forever.

So—

“Let’s see how all that training paid off!”

He tossed another Poké Ball.

Bang—

A flash of white light. A pink-shelled Pokémon appeared.

The moment Slowbro emerged, it found an attack flying straight at its face...

Slowbro: “?”

You trained me just to throw me out now as a meat shield?!

No time for its usual blank-faced act, Slowbro scrambled away in a panic.

Thanks to recent agility drills, it narrowly dodged the [Power Gem] attack.

The beam smashed into a nearby pillar, splitting it in half.

Sweat trickling down its face in a very human gesture, Slowbro turned to August and waved in protest, condemning such inhumane treatment.

“What are you so scared of? You’re thick-skinned—it’ll hurt a bit, tops.”

Slowbro was stunned.

Did that man seriously just say that out loud?

Even Salamence nodded in agreement—August really didn’t treat people (or Pokémon) like people sometimes.

“Hm?” August glanced at Salamence.

“Raaawr!”

Instantly reversing course, Salamence growled at Slowbro in reprimand.

How dare you speak ill of Boss August!

Off to the side, Cyrus’s forehead vein throbbed.

They were horsing around with their Pokémon in the middle of a battle with him. Were they even taking him seriously?

Never mind that this was the first time he’d ever seen a Slowbro used by “Hunter J.”

He gave another command: “Probopass, [Gravity!]

Magnezone began charging up again, and fired an electric blast at Slowbro.

And just to make things even more one-sided, Cyrus sent out two more Pokémon: “Honchkrow, [Night Slash]!”

“Gyarados, [Dragon Dance]!”

Honchkrow, born cruel and merciless, swooped down like a shadowy assassin—intent on taking August out first.

Gyarados began to dance, its aura surging with each twist.

“Mmph... My Gyarados is cooler, I just didn’t bring it today.”

Muttering under his breath, August threw out another Poké Ball. Gardevoir materialized before him.

Without needing to be told, Gardevoir raised her hand in sync with August’s voice:

[Moonblast]!”

A spectral moon rose behind her, releasing a burst of glittering Fairy-type energy that struck Honchkrow’s wing mid-air.

Honchkrow spiraled out, slamming into a stone column.

On the other side, Magnezone and Probopass were double-teaming Slowbro, thinking it would be an easy win—but somehow Slowbro seemed unaffected by [Gravity].

With a sudden tumble-roll, it dodged the electric beam.

Even Slowbro looked stunned—Wait, the training actually worked?!

Salamence, feeling neglected, let out a roar and charged into battle.

A [Dragon Pulse] roared out, hitting Probopass head-on and staggering it.

But only staggering. The Steel-type wasn’t too bothered.

Slowbro, now riding high, felt a rush of confidence.

Its usually dumb, vacant eyes sharpened, and it unleashed Surf!

Swoooosh!

A towering wave surged forward, crashing toward Probopass.

Its first instinct was to use [Magnet Rise] to fly out of danger, but then it remembered—it had just used [Gravity], locking both itself and Slowbro to the ground.

In a panic, it could only raise an [Earth Power] barrier in front of it...

Crash!

The wave shattered the barrier and swallowed Probopass whole.

Meanwhile, Honchkrow clawed its way out of the rubble. Realizing Gardevoir wasn’t to be trifled with, it opted to go after the “weaker prey.”

Namely—

[Payback]!”

A move that returns the damage received with double the force!

Blazing with vengeance, Honchkrow dove straight at Slowbro.

Slowbro, still basking in its victory, was completely blindsided. As it went flying, a single thought flashed through its mind:

Gardevoir hit you—why are you taking it out on me?!

Before it passed out, it was still trying to figure it out.

It crashed into a pillar and was buried under the collapse.

August checked on it with [Aura]. Confirming it was only knocked out, he left it alone for now.

Gardevoir, seeing Honchkrow hurt Slowbro, retaliated immediately.

[Dazzling Gleam]!”

Brilliant light burst across the battlefield.

Already wounded, Honchkrow stood no chance and collapsed instantly.

Magnezone, locked in a struggle with Salamence, was struck next. Paralyzed in place, it was finished off by a searing [Flamethrower].

Only Probopass (flushed away earlier) and Gyarados were relatively unharmed.

Cyrus finally gave another command.

“Gyarados, [Giga Impact]!”

Who knows how many layers of [Dragon Dance] it had stacked—but Gyarados roared, sonic boom in its wake, and lunged toward August.

BOOM!

The ground cracked open beneath its crash, Spear Pillar trembling from the impact.

But...

Cyrus stared at the smoke cloud, frowning. He couldn’t shake the feeling that August wasn’t finished.

Before he could react, a spoon extended from the smoke, jabbing Gyarados and knocking it into a pillar.

A... spoon?

Cyrus froze.

From her hidden perch in the Distortion World, Sird’s eyelid twitched. That spoon—she knew that spoon.

She almost fled on instinct, but remembering she was safe in the reverse world, she calmed down and kept watching.

As the smoke cleared, “Hunter J” looked down at a tear in his sleeve.

Beside him stood a humanoid Pokémon Sird had never seen before, calmly withdrawing its elongated spoon.

Cyrus remained silent. He could feel the threat radiating from this unfamiliar Pokémon.

A moment passed.

“You’re not Hunter J,” he said slowly.

No way was J this strong.

August: “?"

"You’re just now figuring that out?”

Is Cyrus always this slow?

With that, August wiped a hand across his face, revealing a new—but vaguely familiar—one beneath.

Cyrus stared. That face… Hadn’t it been in the intelligence Sird brought back from Kanto?

August: “Let me introduce myself. August, head of the International Police’s Kanto Division.”

“Cyrus, you are hereby charged with unlawful assembly, assault and detention of League officers, and acts of violent terrorism. Come with me.”

Cyrus hadn’t even managed a sneer when—

Crack!

The machine holding Mesprit and Azelf clicked open.

Uxie floated beside it, waving at August. Mesprit and Azelf, now free, beamed with joy.

While Cyrus was distracted, Uxie had slipped in and freed the others.

Cyrus’s expression darkened.

He’d failed to catch Uxie, and lost the other two besides. His plan to forge the [Red Chains] was now in ruins.

The battle wasn’t going in his favor either.

It was time for the backup plan.

He lowered his head.

When he looked up again, madness gleamed in his eyes.

“Magnezone, [Explosion]!”

Magnezone, now crackling with electricity, dove straight at August, eyes blazing with the same crazed light.

BOOM!

A blinding explosion engulfed the pillar. A miniature mushroom cloud rose, shockwaves splintering the ruins even further.

A true Magnezone explosion.

And Cyrus didn’t even glance at it.

He opened a nearby case and flung out two crimson chains.

These were near-perfect replicas of the [Red Chains], forged from Veilstone meteorite, the power of the lake guardians, and Galactic technology.

If he couldn’t get the originals—he’d use these prototypes.

Damn that international cop!

He snarled as the chains flew upward: “Dimensional gate, open! Awaken!”

The chains spun rapidly, activating some mysterious force. A massive rift—ten meters high—tore open in the sky, like a gateway to another world.

Cyrus’s face lit with fanaticism.

Watching from the Distortion World, Sird’s eyes glinted.

If August was taken out by the explosion, and if the chains truly could summon Dialga and Palkia—

Could the Boss actually win?

She wondered.

But…

The chains spun and spun, and the rift quivered—but never opened.

What the hell?

Cyrus was frozen in place.

Then, a voice came from beside him—

“Are you even trying?”

Cyrus instinctively turned. Standing there, completely unscathed, was August—watching like a bored critic at a bad play.

“You hyped it up for so long—I thought you had something big planned. I waited forever for this?”
