Pokémon: My Titles Know No Limits! [313]

After bidding farewell to Cynthia, August returned to the interrogation room with Blue.

But this time, his target wasn’t Sird—it was Darkrai.

Standing before the pitch-black Pokémon, August slammed a folder down on the desk with a loud smack.

“Darkrai, you’re in serious trouble!”

Darkrai’s glowing blue eyes turned to him, full of confusion.

Like Sird, Darkrai had no idea what had happened. Its last memory was being seized by Giratina—then it had blacked out, and now it had woken up in this strange place.

Sensing Darkrai’s confusion, August’s tone sharpened: “Do you realize that you and your Trainer violated thirty-six laws, six of which are classified as felonies?”

“You’ve caused mass comas with your nightmares—even one of my subordinates was affected!”

Darkrai wasn’t the most expressive Pokémon, but at August’s words, it hung its head in shame.

It had indeed done many harmful things. Even if it was just following Sird’s orders, it had carried them out.

As for the nightmares... those were beyond its control.

Just as Darkrai braced itself for judgment—

August’s tone shifted. “Of course, considering you were simply following orders, and your heart isn’t evil, I’m willing to give you a chance to redeem yourself.”

Darkrai jerked its head up, staring at him in disbelief.

It had committed serious crimes, and yet August was still willing to give it a second chance?

Nearby, Sabrina had already turned away, unable to bear watching this anymore...

But August just smiled warmly. “Join the Kanto division of the International Police. Become one of us—fight evil.”

“Redemption lies ahead.”

A fire lit in Darkrai’s eyes… but then flickered uncertainly.

It was the embodiment of nightmares. Its presence alone made people and Pokémon tremble in fear. Wherever it went, dreams turned to terror.

Could something like me really be redeemed...?

Seeing its hesitation, August pointed at the [Red Chain] draped around Darkrai’s body.

“You haven’t noticed? You’ve been here a while, and yet no one has fallen into a nightmare. The [Red Chain] can help you control the nightmare energy leaking from your body.”

“If you join us, it’s yours to keep.”

Darkrai had seen with its own eyes how August had used the [Red Chain] in the Distortion World to subdue Dialga and Palkia.

It never imagined August would lend such a powerful tool to it.

Overwhelmed with gratitude, Darkrai nodded vigorously.

“Welcome aboard!”

As August offered his hand, the [Red Chain] loosened, sliding naturally over Darkrai’s shoulders like a sash. The visual gave it an uncanny Ghost Rider vibe.

Darkrai hesitated… then grasped August’s hand.

Seeing that August remained unaffected by its powers, Darkrai finally allowed a flicker of happiness to show.

[PsychicPrettyGirl]: Another one PUA’d into joining you.

[GardevoirSupremacy]: What PUA? It’s mutual respect and shared ideals, okay? Don’tslander me.

[PsychicPrettyGirl]: Uh-huh, suuuure.

Even while bickering with Sabrina in his head, August radiated nothing but sincerity toward his new recruit.

“Come on, I’ll show you around. Time to meet your colleagues!”

When August brought Darkrai into the base’s main hall, the noisy room instantly fell silent.

August was quite pleased with the reaction.

“Everyone, please welcome our newest member—Darkrai!”

The group turned to stare at the dark-type legend.

For a moment, silence.

Then they surged forward.

“Whoa, the Darkrai? The Nightmare Pokémon?!”

“That’s so cool!”

“Our roster just keeps growing!”

“So... what trick did August use to rope you in?”

Wait, what was that last one?

Darkrai was overwhelmed. Every other Trainer it had met had attacked it on sight. It had never been welcomed before—let alone celebrated.

August finally stepped in to disperse the crowd, then guided Darkrai to where Platinum stood.

“Platinum—let’s give this a try. See if we can finally cure your nightmares.”

Platinum nodded, hopeful.

...

Office.

August sat at his desk, reviewing the system's reward screen from the Spear Pillar mission—where he’d captured Cyrus, Dialga, and Palkia.

Still, he couldn’t help but feel a little shortchanged.

Come on. Capturing Cyrus and catching both Dialga and Palkia should be two separate accomplishments. Why is there only one reward...?

He shook his head and refocused on the screen.

[Please select your reward...]

[1. Azure Flute]
[2. Legend Plate]
[3. Round-trip Ticket: Sinnoh–Hisui]

August raised an eyebrow.

Wait... what?

Is the system bugging out? Why is it being this generous all of a sudden?

All three choices were powerful:

This is suspiciously good...

But instead of being thrilled, August hesitated.

He thought back—if he remembered correctly, the [Legend Plate] was something Arceus carried with it personally.

And right now, he was still in Sinnoh—Arceus’s home turf.

If he chose the [Legend Plate]wouldn’t that trigger something? Like getting caught by a vengeful, petty Creator?

“Sss...”

The more he thought about it, the more it seemed likely.

This is a trap. That has to be a trap option!

Besides, the [Legend Plate] only worked with Arceus. It wouldn’t be any use to other Pokémon.

August immediately ruled it out.

Next: the [Azure Flute].

Also a big no.

If I’m actively avoiding Arceus, why would I pick the item that summons it?!

Which left...

“Looks like I’m going with the Sinnoh–Hisui round-trip ticket.”

A safe, practical choice. Plus, he was curious about Hisui. It was a big region—there’s no way he’d randomly run into Arceus there… right?

With his decision made, August confirmed:

System, I choose option 3.

As soon as he spoke, his phone lit up with a golden glow.

Frowning, August picked it up and looked at the screen—where a glowing Arceus icon had just appeared.

“.....”

He stared at it, deep in thought.

What exactly is the relationship between my system and the alpa... cough, I mean, the great and revered Creator God Arceus?

Just then, a knock came at the door.

Blue’s voice: “August, everyone’s waiting for you!”

“Huh? Oh—” August glanced at the clock and blinked. “The party’s about to start already?”

...

Somehow, over an hour had passed.

The party was being held right inside Hunter J’s base.

To give the original owner a bit of... “involvement,” August had installed a screen in J’s former private quarters—just so she could watch them party in her own base.

From the racket she could hear, J was smashing her walls in frustration.

Lounging beside the newly built pool, sipping a Shiinotic juice handed to him by Gardevoir, August was the picture of serenity.

Not far off, a Slowbro was paddling lazily at the pool’s edge. As the most injured during the battle with Cyrus, it had been granted a full month of rest.

Salamence was tearing into food like a beast. In ten minutes, it had eaten a week’s worth of meals for a normal Pokémon. Thankfully, August had hired an oversized chef team in advance.

An Eevee was perched atop Blastoise, locked in a sumo-style wrestling match with a Sneasel riding on Feraligatr.

Both heavy-hitting starters seemed evenly matched—until Eevee “cheated” by sneakily using [Helping Hand].

WHUMP!

Feraligatr toppled over.

Eevee turned its head, whistling innocently. Where did it learn that?

Gengar was playing cards with Gold and Togetaro.

August clearly saw both Gengar and Gold cheating—swapping and hiding cards. Gengar even used the ghost dimension to pass cards around.

But even with all that, both got utterly crushed by Togetaro’s absurd luck.

Darkrai hadn’t integrated into the group just yet—but it seemed to be having a deep discussion with Mewtwo in a quiet corner.

Blue tapped away half-heartedly at the mission report.

Sabrina and Platinum were off discussing fashion and outfits.

Aside from Zinnia shrieking and clinging to Rayquaza like a fangirl, everything was peaceful and harmonious.

Until—

Two figures burst into view.

Celebi, face smeared with cake, was chasing after Mew, who was snickering uncontrollably.

Mew darted left, then right—agile as ever—and easily avoided Celebi’s pursuit, even pausing to make a face.

Celebi huffed in frustration—then raised its arms. “Labi~!”

A green light soared into the sky.

Time rippled—and two more Celebi appeared, summoned from alternate timelines.

Now a trio, the Celebi launched a coordinated assault, cake in hand, eyes locked on their target.

Mew was dumbfounded.

It flailed dramatically, waving its arms in protest. Not fair!

Celebi beamed. “Labi~!”

As the circle closed in, Mew glanced around frantically—then spotted August.

Its eyes lit up.

In a flash, it teleported straight to his shoulder and stuck out its tongue.

“Blehh~!”

Try throwing cake now, I dare you!

Celebi hesitated. Mew looked smug.

But before it could gloat any further...

August reached up and grabbed Mew by the scruff of the neck, lifting it in front of his face. “Using me as a shield, huh?”

“Mew...!”

Mew panicked and looked to Mewtwo for help.

Mewtwo gave it a deadpan glance, then turned away, pretending not to see anything.

August handed the squirming Mew to the approaching Celebi. “She’s all yours.”

Ten seconds later...

A frosting-covered Mew glared at August, eyes full of betrayal.

August showed no remorse. Instead, he dipped a finger in the whipped cream on Mew’s fur, tasted it, and nodded.

“Mint-vanilla. Not bad.”

“Mew~!”

Flushing with embarrassment, Mew dove into his arms and smeared frosting all over his clothes.

August: “.....”

A suicide counterattack, huh...

Gary, seeing this, pointed at August and doubled over in laughter.

“Ahahahaha! August—!”

“Hm?”

The moment August looked over, Gary’s expression snapped into seriousness. “Ahem... nothing. I, uh... suddenly felt ill.”

“I think Gold’s Slowpoke tail roast is done—I’ll go check!”

And he vanished like a blur.

So smooth, August actually paused to wonder: Am I too hard on him...?

...No. Definitely not.

Just then, Cynthia walked over, holding two ice cream cups. She hesitated for a moment—then seemed to make up her mind.

“August... do you want some ice cream?”

She held them out—but clutched both tightly, like she couldn’t bear to let go.

August: “.....”

I know you’re bad at decisions, but this is impossible to choose from!

Thankfully, Gardevoir took initiative, using [Psychic] to blend both cups, then divided them evenly between the two.

Cynthia took a bite and immediately lit up.

“What brand is this? It’s incredible!”

It was nothing like any ice cream she’d had before. The flavor was on another level.

“Of course it’s good. I hired a special dessert team from Galar. They’ve got all 64 forms of Alcremie—including [Gigantamax].”

“Seriously? That must’ve cost a fortune…”

August waved it off. “Eh, it’s all covered. Honestly, we can’t even spend the budget fast enough.”

The party was wonderful—but short-lived.

As much as August wanted to keep celebrating, reality always returns.

Seated on the couch, he pushed down a nosy Eevee trying to peek at his screen and opened his laptop.

A shadowy figure appeared onscreen—hidden in darkness.

“This operation was a huge success, August. I’ve received your report. If it weren’t for you... Sinnoh might not exist right now.”
