I’m Doomed! I Got Trapped in a Dream! [1] & Synopsis

Alternate title: Genshin, But Everyone’s an NPC
Or: Oops, I Accidentally Got Isekai’d into the Genshin Game, but Everyone in Co-Op Is Themselves?!
I thought I’d transmigrated to Teyvat.
But it turns out... I was inside the Genshin Impact game itself — daily commissions, domains, even the Spiral Abyss were all here.
At first, I assumed this was divine punishment. That I’d died after playing Genshin too much in life and ended up in some postmortem Genshin hell, doomed to endlessly grind the Abyss and clock in like a prisoner.
Then I met the real Lesser Lord Kusanali — Nahida.
She told me this wasn’t the real Teyvat. This world was only a dream. The true Teyvat exists somewhere else, far bigger than anything I’d seen here.
But I still couldn’t leave. I was trapped in this dream-world version of the game.
One after another, the characters began showing up — drawn into this strange, shared dream. Together, we started pushing through the main story of Genshin, witnessing events before they unfolded, catching glimpses of the fates they were meant to face.
And before we even realized it, the destiny of the entire continent of Teyvat...
had already begun to change.

“Damn it!”
Clang!
A dull-edged sword hit the ground with a heavy thud. A moment later, the sound of angry footsteps rustled through the forest floor outside Mondstadt, fading into the distance.
“Hey! Where are you going? Come over to Paimon’s side!”
Ignoring Paimon’s call behind him, the young man named Chen Mo didn’t even glance back as he stormed toward Mondstadt City.
“Why the hell is my luck so bad...”
Fuming as he walked, Chen Mo muttered to himself:
“Yeah, I did wish for this right before I died. I said I wanted to transmigrate into Genshin Impact… but you—you bastard!!”
Clenching his fists, Chen Mo raised his head to the sky and shouted:
“Why’d you actually toss me into the game version of Genshin?! I meant the world that Genshin depicts! Teyvat! I didn’t ask to be dropped into your crappy game world, doing daily commissions to earn primogems like it’s a full-time job!”
He really wanted to scream a whole string of curses at the sky — but stopped himself, just in case something like a Skyfrost Nail or whatever else might fall and stab him fifty meters deep into the ground. Better not push it.
Still, getting played this hard by fate — that kind of cruel joke cuts deep.
Chen Mo, 24 years old. A college grad without direction. His only joy in life was playing Genshin Impact.
After failing the grad school exam, bombing every job interview, getting dumped, and striking out on the civil service track, he completely gave up. Became a shut-in. And one night, he made a wish — begged the heavens to let him transmigrate into Genshin.
And wouldn’t you know it — the next morning, he woke up on a beach with Paimon floating nearby. For the longest time, he was absolutely over the moon.
My dream’s come true! I really get to start an adventure in Teyvat!
But it didn’t take long for things to start feeling... off.
“Why does… why does walking up to a teleport waypoint open a dialogue box?!”
“Wait, even Paimon has a dialogue box?!”
“Hold on—no way. Don’t tell me there's a game menu too—”
“Holy crap! There is!”
“…”
One second, Chen Mo had been buzzing with energy, exploring everywhere. The next, he went dead silent. Speechless.
All the signs pointed to one undeniable truth:
He hadn’t just transmigrated into Genshin. He’d transmigrated into a 1:1 pixel-perfect replica of the game itself.
The textures were blatantly artificial. And when he walked near objects, they triggered interaction prompts identical to the in-game UI.
Even the game menu was intact…
In that moment, the grand vision that had filled Chen Mo’s mind — of saving the world, forming bonds with the nations and their heroes, earning love and admiration — shattered like glass.
What replaced it were endless memories of slogging through daily commissions…
Hazardous transports, climbing cliffs, chasing hilichurls in circles, getting scolded after food deliveries, slimes, apples, lightning strikes, leylines, abyss runs, grind after grind after grind...
Scene after soul-sucking scene from his game-life flickered through his mind.
And then came the mental image of getting garbage stats on artifact rolls—
“Damn it!”
Chen Mo couldn’t hold it in anymore. He hurled his dull sword at the ground with a loud thump, turned on his heel, and stormed off — away from Paimon, away from the current Archon Quest.
What I wanted was an epic tale — and you’ve got me hoeing fields for a living!
He grumbled silently.
All he wanted now was to find a quiet place to wallow in his emo spiral.
After walking for a while, Chen Mo found a boulder by Starfell Lake and plopped down onto it.
Thankfully, Mondstadt’s scenery wasn’t bad. The sky was a clear blue dotted with wisps of white cloud. The grassy hills rolled out in lush green, trees and shrubs showing shades of pale yellow, burnt orange, and vibrant green — signs of healthy growth.
As he gazed at the scenery and listened to the wind rustling through the leaves, his mood gradually began to settle.
The anger melted away, and he realized… maybe ending up here wasn’t the worst thing.
At least this place didn’t have the industrial pollution and noise of his former life. The models looked janky up close, sure, but from afar the vistas were still quite pleasant.
After sitting for a while, Chen Mo gave in and lay down on a patch of grass nearby.
The ground felt cool beneath him. He rested his head on his hands, one leg crossed over the other. The grass was modeled just high enough to brush his belly, which gave him an odd sense of security.
Before long, he drifted off to sleep.
Who knows how much time passed, but when Chen Mo woke up again, it felt like the best sleep he’d had since middle school.
He stretched his limbs, rolled his shoulders. Every joint in his body felt light and refreshed — after all, this was his brand new, transmigrated body. Not that nearly 30-year-old lemon from his last life.
All around him, the sky was still brilliantly blue. The clouds still fluffy white. The grass still verdant. And the wind… still so soothing to the ear.
Chen Mo smiled.
Waking up every day inside the open world of Genshin… maybe this is a kind of happiness, too.
He looked toward the nearby hilltop, where Paimon was still floating patiently, waiting for him to resume the main quest.
This time, he wasn’t angry anymore. He strolled leisurely back up the hill overlooking Starfell Lake, picked up the sword he’d thrown down earlier, and returned to Paimon’s side.
Then he reached out and tapped the dialogue box hovering above her head.
“That’s the Statue of The Seven. The statues are scattered across the land, symbolizing the Archons watching over this world…”
The quest continued. Paimon’s NPC voice resumed its usual script.
“Hey, Paimon,” Chen Mo said, casually grabbing her cheeks and stretching them sideways, “Tell me the truth. Are you actually part of Celestia?”
“Muuh uw arr blaying… you’re shupposed to meed the Anemo Archon… buh dere’s a reashon why we shtart in Mondstadt…”
Paimon’s speech warped hilariously as her cheeks were stretched out, becoming a mumbly mess.
Naturally, she didn’t react — she was an NPC, after all. There was no way she’d respond to what he did.
She just kept going, using that chipper, high-pitched voice to explain all things Anemo.
“Alright, alright… I’ll stop messing with you,” Chen Mo said with a chuckle, letting go of her cheeks. “Let’s go find Venti, heh…”
He couldn’t help but laugh. This NPC was so committed to staying in character — sticking rigidly to the script. It was kind of adorable.
A title flashed across the screen:
[Prologue Act I – The Outlander Who Caught the Wind]
And with that, Chen Mo followed Paimon down the hill at a leisurely pace.
“As you know, language and poetry ride the wind. I believe your sister’s whereabouts may be hidden among them…”
He ignored Paimon’s rambling and instead took in the scenery along the way.
“Damn, Mondstadt really is gorgeous. Tsk.”
“Hey! Where are you going? Come back over to Paimon’s side!”
“Ah, alright, alright…”
Somehow, Chen Mo was starting to find this little routine with the NPC… surprisingly fun.
