Pokémon: My Titles Know No Limits! [331]

“So we’re heading to the Battle Frontier?” Sabrina asked, pouring herself a cup of tea with a casual flick of her psychic power.

August blinked. “Huh? You signed up too, Sabrina?”

Sabrina took a sip of her tea, her tone cool. “A department head who knows this little about his subordinates—how negligent.”

With a wave of her hand, her phone floated over in front of August.

The official World Championships app opened automatically. On the ranking page, a sleek black Ultra Ball icon glinted on the screen, accompanied by the words: [Advanced Class – Rank 91].

A faint smirk tugged at the corner of her lips. That had been her final ranking in the previous year’s World Championships—not something she’d ever bothered to mention before. But now was the perfect moment to show off a little.

She looked toward August, expecting surprise or even awe.

Instead, he merely curled his lip. “Ninety-first? I thought you meant ninth… That’s kind of embarrassing for the Kanto branch. Even Gary scored higher than that, didn’t he, Gary?”

Gary happened to be passing by. He had no idea what August was talking about, but it sounded like a compliment. So he gave a modest little wave, breaking into a bright, humble grin.

“Well, I suppose I did okay.”

Sabrina: “…”

Suddenly, she had a new appreciation for what Lance must’ve felt like all the time.

Right now, she really wanted to tell August: Don’t you dare match with me in Ranked.

...

Hoenn – Battle Frontier

As the opening ceremony of the World Championships drew near, the island was flooded with tourists and Trainers.

The influx of visitors from around the world brought a buzz of excitement to this newly completed Battle Frontier.

Technically, only the opening ceremony and final Masters Tournament would be held here—lower-tier matches could be done remotely through the official app’s matchmaking system.

But that didn’t stop people from flocking to the site just to be part of the moment.

...

Airport

A dirigible descended slowly through the sky.

When the hatch opened, August stepped out in a breezy beach outfit, sunlight warming his shoulders in a golden glow.

Behind him, Eevee bounded forward and leapt onto his shoulder, squinting into the sun with a contented smile.

“Bui~!”

Gardevoir moved beside August and gently straightened the collar that Eevee had ruffled in its enthusiasm.

This trip to the Battle Frontier had been planned as a team-building retreat for the entire Kanto branch. Everyone had come—except for Platinum, who was still off training hard in Sinnoh. Even Professor Oak had joined them for the flight.

“So this is the Battle Frontier? It’s packed!” Gold was instantly energized by the festive crowd as soon as he stepped off the dirigible.

If August hadn’t been around, he and Togetaro might’ve dashed straight into the crowd already.

Silver, as usual, remained silent. But from the eager gleam in his eyes, it was obvious—he could barely wait to dive into the Championship.

“There’s gotta be someone here who’ll appreciate our performance, right…” Pearl and Diamond were huddled together, discussing the viability of a street show.

“Hoenn, huh? Got a few old friends around here…” Blaine adjusted his sunglasses thoughtfully.

At the back of the group, Mewtwo stood by the hatch, watching Mew wrestle playfully with Celebi like a pair of rowdy kids. A weary look crossed his face.

So far, everything was going smoothly—until…

“We finally made it!” Gary strode off the dirigible, throwing his hands up high. “Hoenn! Gary Oak is back, baby!”

He shouted so loud it echoed across the terminal.

Last time he’d been in Hoenn, he’d been interviewed by Hoenn TV after helping stop Groudon—he’d basked in that limelight for weeks.

Now, revisiting the place, nostalgia was written all over his face.

August sighed. “Could you not be so loud? People are already staring…”

Gary followed his gaze and noticed a group of tourists fresh off their plane, whispering and pointing in their direction.

His smile stiffened for a moment—but after all the times August had roasted him, his skin was practically armor-plated by now.

“Hah, they’re just jealous of my good looks!”

With a toss of his hair, he struck a pose.

Behind him, Sabrina and Blue—who had just stepped off the airship—glanced at each other.

Gary’s really turning into August.

Courtney smiled without saying a word. But Zinnia was more direct, blurting out, “Gary, have you finally been assimilated by August?”

Gary: “?”

August: “?”

Zinnia, now under the scrutiny of both of them—and their four collective eyes—realized maybe that wasn’t the smartest thing to say aloud.

She stuck out her tongue and quickly changed the subject. “Didn’t Scott say he’d pick us up? Where is he?”

No sooner had she finished speaking—

A convoy of cars pulled into the airport terminal.

Under the curious gaze of onlookers, Scott stepped out of the lead vehicle, also dressed in beach attire and wearing a beaming smile.

“Sorry, sorry! The crowds were nuts on the road… Welcome to the Battle Frontier!”

Thanks to Scott’s hospitality, August and the others were temporarily settled into a luxury beachside villa.

Zinnia—worried August might chew her out later—dragged Sabrina, Blue, and Courtney off on a shopping spree.

Gold took Diamond and Pearl to a game center for some arcade action.

Gary and Silver, meanwhile, planned to scout the island and see what intel they could gather about the World Championships.

...

Inside the villa

Only August, Blaine, and Scott remained.

“I’m here now. You can tell me who my opponent for the exhibition match is, right?” August asked, folding his arms.

He’d asked Scott the same thing over the phone before, but the man had just laughed it off—“You’ll know when you get here.”

Well, he was here now. No more dodging.

Scott grinned. He’d known this question was coming.

With a bright smile, he said, “It’s someone you should be quite familiar with.”

"Huh? Familiar?" August’s first thought was Steven.

Did he actually get Steven to come promote the Battle Frontier?

But just yesterday, Steven had sent him an invoice for Pokéblocks—he hadn’t mentioned anything about this…

“Should be arriving right about now.”

Even as Scott said it, a knock sounded at the villa’s door.

“Come in!” August called.

The door swung open, and a familiar face stepped into view.

August blinked. The person on the other side froze too.

“Cynthia?”

“August?”

They stared at each other, wide-eyed—then turned in unison to look at Scott.

Scott clapped his hands together, delighted. “See? I knew you two knew each other!”
