No theatrics, no unnecessary buildup. At the start of her turn, after drawing, Hoshino Mai immediately slid the card into her Duel Disk—the one card she’d added to her hand last turn. A card so powerful it was Limited in official OCG.

A storm of brilliant feathers swept across the field, obliterating [Swords of Revealing Light] in a flash.

“With that, your attack lockdown is gone.”

“But at the cost of one card from your hand.”

Yuuhi didn’t seem surprised. In fact, he’d expected Mai to have a way to send [Hysteric Sign] to the GY. That was why he’d played [Swords of Revealing Light]—to restrict her decision-making, to bait out her plays.

“And with just those two monsters left, there’s not much she can follow up with…”

Yuuhi knew the Harpie archetype fairly well.

Solid in terms of draw and search—[Hysteric Sign] was as good as most meta engines—but the deck lacked true one-card starters. At least in his experience, there was no real synergy between cards like [Harpie Dancer] and [Harpist].

Unless—

“Don’t get ahead of yourself, Yuuhi-kun. I haven’t finished setting the stage for my Harpies yet.”

A slot on the side of Mai’s Duel Disk popped open, like a CD tray. She inserted a new card into it.

“I activate the Field Spell—[Divine Wind of Mist Valley]!”

The environment didn’t visibly change, but the breeze kicked up.

Cool, refreshing wind washed over the plaza, easing the lingering heat. A bikini-clad girl with white wings materialized in the air, dancing gracefully in the flow.

“Then I Normal Summon—[Harpie Dancer]!”

No need to repeat what had already been said. As [Harpie Channeler] raised her scepter and chanted, another Harpie with long lavender hair descended in a flash of wind.

The light refracted again—[Harpie Lady 1] followed.

In the blink of an eye, as if echoing Yuuhi’s earlier explosive summon, Mai had filled her field with monsters—even more than he had, and undeniably more visually dazzling.

Her fans, too, erupted with cheers.

Compared to the unknown transfer student and lone boy, Hoshino Mai—a well-known rising star in the local scene—was easily the crowd favorite. Skill, looks, charisma—she had it all.

But none of that mattered to Yuuhi now. He was in the zone.

“Four Level 4 monsters…”

All summoned monsters had the same Level—a dangerous sign.

[Harpie Lady 1], by effect, counted as [Harpie Lady] on the field. Her effect also gave all WIND monsters +300 ATK. Still, it wasn’t enough to get past [Jack’s Knight]… which meant—

“You’re not planning to attack directly, are you?”

“No need, Yuuhi-kun. I have a much more elegant solution.”

A subtle gleam crossed her eyes. Mai reached down and overlaid three of her monsters atop one another. A black-framed card appeared in her hand, and she placed it on top.

“I overlay three Level 4 monsters!”

As the words left her lips, her three Harpies dissolved into beams of green light—symbols of the WIND attribute—spiraling into a vortex that had opened between her and Yuuhi.

The swirling maelstrom sparkled like a real nebula, impossibly vivid.

“Majestic dragon of prey—spread your wings and descend! Let your claws and fangs tear your enemies to shreds! I Xyz Summon—!”

The vortex condensed—then burst outward.

From its heart emerged a massive crimson dragon, its eyes blazing with ferocity, a golden crown-like crest on its head.

A heavy iron collar clamped around its neck. The chain extended from it… to [Harpie Channeler], who held it in hand like a leash.

“[Harpie’s Pet Phantasmal Dragon], Rank 4!”

This was Mai’s ace monster.

“Thanks to [Harpie Lady 1], [Phantasmal Dragon] gains 300 ATK, putting it at 2300. And as long as it has materials, you can’t target any of my Harpie monsters with attacks or effects.”

Then, with a spark of heat rising in her chest, Mai added:

“Also, [Phantasmal Dragon] ignores your monster line entirely—it can attack you directly. Battle phase, Yuuhi-kun.”

“[Harpie’s Pet Phantasmal Dragon], attack! Illusory Inferno!”

[Yuuhi LP: 3000 → 700]

The chained dragon reared back, jaws unleashing a spiraling breath of fire. It flew straight past the Poker Knights—none of them could stop it—and slammed into Yuuhi’s projection.

It was his first time experiencing damage from full-hologram dueling.

It hurt, sure, but this wasn’t a Shadow Game. The pain was dull and bearable.

“Next—[Harpie Lady 1] attacks [Queen’s Knight]!”

With the other three Harpies now Xyz Material, [Harpie Lady 1] was the only one left. She launched skyward, talons sharper than blades, raking across [Queen’s Knight]'s chest in a single decisive strike.

And of course, her own effect raised her ATK by 300 as well.

That 100-point difference translated into real damage—further cutting into Yuuhi’s remaining Life Points.
