Pokémon: My Titles Know No Limits! [375]

The clash between Mega Lucario and Mega Gardevoir had every eye in the stadium riveted.

Especially when Lucario, weaving through the air with fluid grace, burst apart Gardevoir’s [Psychic] using [Comet Punch]—one strike after another—the crowd erupted in awe.

Too good!

August, too, noticed the shift.

He was slightly surprised by how agile Cynthia’s Lucario had become, but quickly adjusted. “Gardevoir, [Hyper Voice]!”

Gardevoir brought her hands to her chest. A clear, elegant voice began to rise.

Diantha’s face stiffened.

She hadn’t expected August to actually tell the truth when he once claimed his Gardevoir was a fan of hers.

Because this song—was none other than the theme from her breakout movie “My Gardevoir Is a Mafia Princess.”

And with that black dress, long gloves, and icy demeanor…

It fit way too well.

But surrounded by side-eyes and giggles from the crowd, Diantha had the sudden urge to grab a plane and flee the region.

So embarrassing!!

Even Cynthia blinked in surprise—clearly not expecting that song either.

But that brief distraction was all August needed.

Under the effect of [Pixilate], the Fairy-charged soundwaves rippled outward from Gardevoir in an explosive shockwave.

The sonic burst tore through the already-cracked terrain, a holdover from Snorlax’s earlier [Mega Punch].

Crackling with shattered stones and glittering sound energy, the [Hyper Voice] struck at Lucario like a typhoon.

Lucario instinctively raised his fists.

But there was no blocking this—a sound-based blast with area-wide coverage. The force struck Lucario head-on, launching him backwards.

Wham!

Lucario hit the ground hard, skidding back several meters as his knees dug into the dirt in a desperate attempt to stay upright. But the impact still left a deep trench.

The distance between them had widened again.

“Lucario, [Extreme Speed]—”

Cynthia was hoping to quickly close the gap again.

But what happened next left everyone stunned.

Commentator: “What’s this? Lucario’s acting strangely—he’s not attacking Gardevoir at all, but darting off in the wrong direction!”

Lucario had launched forward—but completely missed Gardevoir.

“Lucario?” Cynthia called.

Lucario looked dazed, his expression clouded with confusion.

August didn’t waste the opening.

“Gardevoir, [Psychic]!”

A crushing wave of psychic energy slammed down onto Lucario.

He dropped to one knee, visibly in pain.

“Lucario!”

Was it [Hypnosis]? [Confuse Ray]? Or something else entirely?

Cynthia’s mind raced, but she had no time to analyze. Seeing Gardevoir gearing up for another attack, she ordered quickly, “[Aura Sphere]!”

The strike didn’t do much damage—but it did interrupt Gardevoir’s next move.

Seeing Lucario respond normally again gave Cynthia a sliver of reassurance.

[Extreme Speed]—now!”

Having already powered up with [Swords Dance], Lucario’s best shot was to close the distance and get in close.

But again—

Lucario charged… and this time, although heading the right way, ran right past Gardevoir, as if she wasn’t even there.

August didn’t give him a third chance.

“Gardevoir, [Psychic]!”

The psychic force lashed out from all directions, converging on the still-dazed Lucario.

Boom!

Lucario crashed to the ground, limp.

The air around him shimmered—waves rippling faintly across the arena.

It was only now, as Cynthia scanned the field carefully, that she noticed something: the air itself had a faint pink glow.

She blinked, realization dawning. “This is…”

August nodded, smiling. “[Psychic Terrain].”

Under [Psychic Terrain], any Pokémon grounded on the field is shielded from priority moves.

Cynthia knew the effect—but when had Gardevoir set it?

“When?” she asked, still trying to piece it together.

“You didn’t notice?” August smiled. “She laid it down during [Psychic]—and then activated it under the cover of [Hyper Voice].

“So…” Cynthia narrowed her eyes at Gardevoir, dressed in black. “That song choice was part of the plan too?”

“Of course.”

After all, a plain [Hyper Voice] wouldn’t have distracted her. It had to be something ridiculous enough to draw attention.

Commentator: “Incredible! A textbook feint-and-control tactic! This match is bound to make the World Championships highlight reel!”

Meanwhile, Diantha—desperately pretending to stay composed—was dying inside.

Highlight reel?! That meant her old film would be replayed over and over on every major video platform.

Just imagining her cinematic "dark Gardevoir phase" becoming a meme again made her want to faint on the spot.

Cynthia silently returned her defeated Lucario to its ball.

Taking a deep breath, she locked eyes with August, unshaken. “This battle isn’t over yet.”

“Gastrodon, your turn!”

A West Sea Gastrodon appeared—sluglike, with its distinctive pink and brown coloration.

But just as Cynthia prepared to attack, August recalled Gardevoir.

“?”

Cynthia frowned in confusion.

Then August pulled out a Master Ball.

“You asked me once… what Pokémon I would’ve used if our match on Indigo Plateau hadn’t been interrupted.”

“Well—this is your answer.”

He threw the ball.

A beam of light split the sky.

And in front of the crowd—eyes still closed—stood Mewtwo.

Sensing the shift in atmosphere, Mewtwo opened his eyes.

The moment he did, an oppressive pressure swept across the arena.

He slowly scanned the battlefield—and his eyes landed on Gastrodon and Cynthia.

Everyone in the audience began murmuring.

Who was this Pokémon? Why hadn’t they seen it before?

Some noted the resemblance to Mew—perhaps its evolved form?

Meanwhile, Mewtwo stared directly at Cynthia.

His voice echoed not through the air, but inside everyone’s minds:

[I will defeat you… for Mama Mew.]

August covered his face. “...Oh no.”

So that’s why he insisted on battling in the finals...

Cynthia: “...?”

She turned toward August’s shoulder—currently empty.

But she knew Mew was there.

And sure enough—Mew, still invisible and munching chips, froze in place.

The chips fell from her paw.

Hearing Mewtwo say “Mama Mew” made her entire face flush. Mortified, she wanted to vanish.

Cynthia glanced in her direction, confused.

Mew’s face turned beet red, and she wished she could dive into her Poké Ball and never come out.

What does he mean, Mama Mew?!

Utterly humiliated, Mew yanked on August’s hair in frustration.

This is all your fault!

August, guilt-ridden, could only let her tug away.

Meanwhile, poor Gastrodon—totally unaware of the drama—stood trembling on the field.

Small, vulnerable, completely out of her depth.

---

For the commentators, narrating an August battle was always a mix of pain and joy.

Joy: because he always brought something new.

Pain: because his "new stuff" constantly broke the known boundaries of Pokémon knowledge.

Fortunately, this year’s championship had a wildcard: Iono.

Commentator: “August has sent out an unknown Pokémon. Iono, do you have any information about it?”

She was caught off guard, but having been to August’s home many times, she did know its name.

“Mewtwo,” she said into the mic. “He’s... somehow related to Mew.”

She wasn’t sure how, but one time at August’s house, she’d seen Mewtwo trying to reason with Mew—only for Mew to blow raspberries at him.

That scene had left quite an impression.

The chat exploded.

[She actually knew it?!]
[Now I get it—the organizers knew August would make the finals. That’s why they brought Iono in!]
[Wait—‘related to Mew’? Could Mewtwo actually be Mew’s dad?!]

On the battlefield, Mewtwo remained unaware of the rumors swirling about his “paternity.”

His gaze stayed fixed on Gastrodon.

He would win—for Mama Mew.

Cynthia didn’t hesitate.

“Gastrodon—[Rock Tomb]!”

Rocks flew.

Mewtwo calmly raised his spoon, shattering them with ease.

He raised his other hand. A [Shadow Ball] began to form—dark and seething.

He tossed it.

Gastrodon, feeling the pulse of incoming destruction, immediately dove underground with [Dig].

BOOM!

The [Shadow Ball] exploded.

When the dust cleared, a ten-meter-wide crater yawned across the arena.

Everyone gasped.

There was no longer any doubt.

A Legendary Pokémon.

Power like that—only Legends possessed it.

So… he really is Mew’s dad?!

…At least judging by size, it checked out.

Gastrodon peeked halfway out from underground, staring at the smoldering crater.

A bead of sweat rolled down her face.

If I’d been even a second slower…

Mewtwo looked mildly surprised.

She dodged?

But no matter.

Gastrodon countered with [Scald].

Mewtwo deflected it with ease.

Then levitated, cloaked in energy.

Around him, multiple [Shadow Balls] began to materialize—each radiating lethal intent.

Try dodging these.

Mewtwo hurled them.

BOOM BOOM BOOM—

One explosion after another rocked the field.

Even the arena’s defense systems activated to shield the audience from the aftershocks.

Yet still—

Everyone held their breath.

Watching the barrier tremble, anxiety gripped them.

In the end—Gastrodon fell.

She’d dodged the first barrage, but against Mewtwo’s overwhelming power, she had no chance. Her defensive style simply couldn’t threaten a force like his.

But she hadn’t done nothing

[Stealth Rock] now littered the field.

A setup—but against Mewtwo, those rocks were meaningless.

Cynthia looked up at him and exhaled slowly.

With Gastrodon down, she had only one Pokémon left.

August still had four.

Her chances of winning were gone.

And yet—

She smiled.

She’d expected this.

She pulled out her final Poké Ball.

“You’re up, Garchomp. This one’s tough.”

With a thunderous roar, Garchomp entered the field.

She locked eyes with the levitating Mewtwo.

The final showdown had begun.
