Blue-Eyes White Dragon: Adopted by the King of Knights [68]
Added 2025-06-14 09:32:43 +0000 UTCThose were leisurely days.
And, for this island, they were the last truly peaceful days it would ever see.
The Knights of the Round Table—heroes who stood at the pinnacle of humanity—proved to the world that their legends were no mere fable.
Gawain, “the King’s Right Arm,” lived up to his loyalty and valor. In just a month, he led ten campaigns against the Picts, achieving victory after victory and becoming the most celebrated knight in all Britain—a “Prince Charming” in the eyes of countless women.
The incorruptible Agravain once again took charge of the kingdom’s judiciary, acting as Camelot’s chief magistrate. His judgments were utterly fair and transparent, every verdict clearly accounted for. Plaintiff or defendant, all accepted his decisions—no one cried injustice.
Gareth, meanwhile, returned to her old post alongside Kay, managing the royal palace’s stores—not as a cook, but as the chief steward overseeing all the palace’s odd jobs, beloved and trusted by the King.
Even Mordred had, through her exceptional performance in monster hunts, become something of a hero. The seasoned hunters especially enjoyed sharing drinks and meat with her.
That was all intel from Mashu.
The only one Artoria hadn’t assigned an official post, the “little one” had volunteered herself as an assistant—able to help wherever she liked, though Guinevere wouldn’t grade her work.
Over the course of that month, Mashu made incredible progress, quickly transforming from a clueless newbie to a capable worker.
Her favorite place to help was the kingdom’s intelligence office, assisting Bedivere in collecting reports from various departments, or delivering the King’s orders and running errands.
Sometimes, she helped Agravain, organizing legal cases he’d already judged, sorting them into categories. It seemed Agravain was even preparing to revise the kingdom’s laws to make them more refined and easier for local enforcers to use.
Everyone is so amazing…!
For Mashu, it was a hectic month, but also a deeply happy one.
She’d never experienced such a full, meaningful life.
Sure, a lot of that sense of accomplishment came from being “carried” by twelve legendary bosses—but as a participant, even a humble one, she could still feel proud, right?
But just when Mashu, in her innocence, thought this beautiful life would continue until a true victor emerged among the knights—
“Hmm, everyone’s scores are really high. Looks like you’ve all worked very hard this month.”
“I’m delighted to see such excellence… but this won’t do! There can only be one winning team, so we need a way to widen the gap!”
“How about this: everyone switches jobs, and we try it for another month?”
Sitting atop the throne, the King issued a new royal command in a tone that almost sounded like a suggestion.
The King’s “scheme” had begun.
...
Three days after the job swap.
“Hey, look who it is—”
“Come on in, don’t just stand in the doorway. You’re not working for free today?”
Seeing Mashu hovering uncertainly at the entrance, Wenna—already bored out of her mind—hurried to invite her in, pouring her a glass of tart fruit juice.
Gulp, gulp, gulp—
Mashu picked up the glass almost without thinking and drank, not even bothering to check the flavor.
“Uwah, that’s sour—!”
The wave of sourness hit, making her shudder and almost spit the juice out.
But it certainly woke her up, reminding her exactly where she was.
“Huh? How did I end up here without noticing?”
“Ah, Fou, good afternoon—”
Mashu greeted the adorable white beast.
Fou poked his head out, nuzzling her cheek.
It was a cozy scene—such a cute animal made Mashu laugh out loud. But the next moment, as if remembering something, her mood collapsed. She slumped over the stone table, suddenly listless and lethargic.
“Hey, what’s with you? It’s only been a few days and you’re already like this?”
“C’mon, cheer up—you’re only fifteen! Don’t start moping around like an old woman in her thirties!”
“I told you, working for free never ends well. At least get that stingy King to pay you a little!”
Mashu really had lost interest in work.
But it wasn’t because of “working for free.”
It was because all the smooth, efficient jobs had suddenly turned into chaos, with obstacles at every turn.
“The King transferred Agravain to the intelligence office, to take over Bedivere’s job… For some reason, even simple things ended up a mess, and the other staff complained he was ‘throwing his weight around with a feather duster’.”
“Bedivere got reassigned to the judiciary, but things didn’t go smoothly for him either. He took three days just to resolve a tiny case, and in the end, the plaintiff and defendant settled it themselves.”
“Mordred was sent to internal affairs… Don’t even ask, it was a disaster—she nearly tore down the palace!”
“Lancelot was put in charge of the palace stores… but I heard he blew through all the savings in just two days, and racked up a pile of debt. Sir Kay is so angry he’s about to challenge him to a duel.”
Mashu reported her observations, utterly drained.
In short: in just three days, a flourishing kingdom was already showing signs of unraveling.
“What is the King even thinking?”
Mashu just didn’t get it—everyone was thriving in their proper place, using their own talents. Wasn’t that a good thing?
Why suddenly shake everything up?
And the knights, too—why insist on handling jobs they were terrible at, instead of delegating to their subordinates?
For the first time, Mashu truly understood the struggles of working life.
And right at that moment—
“You really don’t know why?”
A voice sounded nearby—Bluey.
The voice wasn’t loud, but it struck right at Mashu’s soul.
“If you really don’t understand, why not ask your heart?”
“It will tell you the answer.”
