Pokémon: My Titles Know No Limits! [404]

Whatever Cogita and August discussed remains a mystery for now. All that’s certain is that, by the time August emerged from the dining room, the only thing left unshaken was his stubborn mouth.

Just then, the communicator at August’s waist started to ring.

He answered, voice drained of energy: “August here.”

A puzzled voice came through—Nanu. “August? Why do you sound so wiped out…?”

“Ahem, it’s nothing. Did you find anything, Mr. Nanu?” August perked up, putting on his professional tone.

Yesterday, after gathering intel from Wicke, August had reached out to Nanu at International Police HQ—former International Police, current Island Kahuna of Ula’ula Island!

Nanu’s voice was grim. “Just as you said, I found Rocket activity in Po Town. Our scanners picked up strong Ultra Beast signals inside!”

He honestly couldn’t believe it—after all his years as an International Police officer, he takes a little vacation to an Island Kahuna meetup, and Rocket swoops in to take his turf.

If not for August’s warning, he’d still be in the dark!

“What’s your plan, August? If you need me, just say the word,” Nanu said.

With confirmation in hand, August smiled and politely declined, “Thanks, Mr. Nanu, but the Kanto Division’s enough for Rocket. But could you lock down the area around Po Town, to make sure Rocket doesn’t take any hostages?”

“Leave it to me.”

Call ended.

August showed no sign of concern.

All he needed was confirmation that Faba’s tip was legit.

Gary came downstairs just then, surprised. “August, you’re up this early?”

August: “?”

What do you mean ‘up this early’? Do I not usually get up early?

As the Kanto crew gradually woke and gathered, the dining room filled with energy.

Blue’s crash course in tech had worked—Akari, Irida, and Arezu were now totally at home with smartphones, the four of them locked into a frantic four-player co-op game.

August: “….”

Did I just create three internet addicts?

Nearby, Sabrina was using psychic power to perform magic tricks for Eevee, transforming a fork into a pudding cup. Eevee knew full well it was all psychic tricks, but never got tired of the show—mainly because there was always pudding at the end.

Gold was beside Gary, grilling him for advice on catching Legendary Pokémon.

Cynthia and Cogita chatted quietly about history.

Mew, as usual, looked half-awake at the table—she almost nodded off mid-bite, nearly dunking her face in her plate.

August’s gaze landed on Silver in the corner.

“Silver… are you feeling any pressure?” August asked.

After all, Giovanni was Silver’s father.

Silver shook his head, eyes resolute. “I’ll see to it he’s brought to justice!”

August saw that Silver’s state of mind was steady and gave a nod. Standing, he clapped his hands, drawing everyone’s attention.

“Just got confirmation from Mr. Nanu—Rocket is holed up in Po Town on Ula’ula Island. So today’s the day we hit them!”

Gary leapt up, eager. “When do we leave?”

He could hardly wait to have Suicune go wild!

August looked around and declared:

“Right now!”

...

Ula’ula Island lies in eastern Alola.

Po Town sits at the island’s northwest tip, occupying a huge area.

After Team Skull’s occupation, nobody wanted to go near Po Town. And with Nanu away at the Kahuna meeting, Rocket saw their chance.

Not that August thought Nanu’s presence would’ve made much difference.

Nanu’s ever-present Alolan Persian padded at his side, its round face supposedly a symbol of Alola’s prosperity. To August, it just looked like someone had taken ‘chubby cheeks’ too far.

“Counting on you, August!” Nanu said seriously.

It wasn’t just his police sense of justice—his house, bought on the cheap, was in Po Town. Now, his whole retirement fund was under Rocket control.

“Leave it to me,” August replied.

To Nanu’s astonishment, August promptly slipped on a Rocket uniform.

“What’s this…?”

“Relax, it’s just a disguise,” August explained.

Nanu thought for a second and nodded. The International Police did run undercover ops, after all—carrying a Rocket uniform wasn’t that weird.

But as soon as he convinced himself, August’s whole vibe shifted. Gengar at his side, cackling, August barked, “Let’s go—flatten Po Town!”

Nanu: “….”

Is that really a disguise…?

...

Po Town

The wall Deoxys had smashed before had been rebuilt by Rocket’s construction crews, painted pitch black, emblazoned with giant red R’s.

Clearly, Giovanni wasn’t interested in hiding.

August and the group approached the main gate.

The Rocket grunt guarding the gate stared—he could’ve sworn nobody had left the town recently.

Growing suspicious, he reached for his Poké Ball, calling out, “Stop! Who are you?”

August didn’t answer. Instead, Gold strode up. “We’re the Origin Rocket Team!”

He sounded supremely confident—no hesitation at all.

The gate guard blinked. They were Rocket, but… Origin Rocket Team? Never heard of it.

He asked.

And got a look of pure disdain in return. Gold said, “You’ve never heard of the Origin Rocket Team? Let me school you. We go back a thousand years—we’re the real Rocket Team. You guys are just knock-offs!”

The guard didn’t follow most of that, but he caught the last line—they were here to cause trouble!

He immediately tossed a Poké Ball with one hand, slamming the alarm button with the other.

But before he could finish, his body froze in midair.

“What…?”

Before he could process what was happening, his vision went black. The other guard, reaching for the alarm, was just as quickly knocked out by Gardevoir’s psychic.

August stepped up, looking at the two unconscious guards. “Doesn’t even know about the Origin Rocket Team… How did these guys get hired?”

He rifled through the first guard’s pockets for an access card and swiped it.

Leaving Gold and Silver at the gate to replace the guards, and asking Cynthia and Lusamine’s group to wait outside, August and Gary slipped inside Po Town.

Infiltration: complete!

After Rocket’s renovations, Po Town looked completely different.

Not only had the old, abandoned buildings been refurbished, every scrap of graffiti had been cleaned and repainted with Rocket’s logo.

As soon as August stepped inside, he spotted the massive machine at Po Town’s center.

It had just powered up, and as energy surged through it, an Ultra Wormhole opened, spitting out a Kartana.

The poor Kartana barely managed to try and run before Deoxys locked it down. Rocket grunts swarmed, hit it with tranquilizer gas, and popped it into a Beast Ball.

Their routine was so polished, it was practically an assembly line.

“They’re this good at it—how many Ultra Beasts have they caught?” Gary muttered beside August.

Not that I’m scared, he thought, just want to know what we’re up against before the battle starts.

“According to Wicke’s records, about thirty or forty…” August replied.

He saw Gary shudder.

“What, getting cold feet? It’s fine, nothing to be ashamed of.”

“Who… who’s scared!”

Gary forced a brave face. “It’s just a few dozen Ultra Beasts…”

While they were chatting, a Rocket squad leader in the distance noticed them and marched over. “Which department are you from? Why are you just standing here?”

After so many run-ins with Giovanni, August was well-versed in Rocket’s internal structure.

Noticing the squad leader’s uniform—Execution Division—August answered calmly, “We’re from Tech Research. Sent by Dr. Namba.”

“Dr. Namba? Oh, you mean Dr. Zambo! His name is so hard to remember…” the squad leader grumbled, then turned to head further inside.

But August called out, “Wait!”

The squad leader froze.

Then he heard August’s chilling words: “You recognize me, don’t you?”

“What are you talking about? I don’t—”

Even as he denied it, his hand crept to his Poké Ball.

As soon as he gripped it, he relaxed slightly—then spun to hurl it at August.

If he could raise the alarm, Giovanni would know something was up—mission accomplished.

But as he turned, he was confronted by a huge grinning face inches from his own—Gengar!

He barely managed to gasp “Gengar!” before Gengar’s tongue shot out, licking him.

Paralysis shot through him. The ball dropped from his hand.

Before he could collapse, Darkrai emerged from the shadows and enveloped him in a Dark Void—temporarily stashing him away.

From Gengar’s lick to Darkrai’s Dark Void, the whole process took less than three seconds.

The speed of this “disposal” left Gary a little rattled.

He was starting to think—maybe being a cop was actually holding August back…

With the surprise squad leader handled, August and Gary pressed deeper into Po Town.

Up above, Giovanni, monitoring Ultra Beast captures, suddenly felt a chill.

He pulled out his communicator. “Any strange activity from Faba?”

A grunt replied, “No unusual behavior yet.”

Giovanni nodded. “Keep watching.”

He hung up, gaze sweeping the busy grunts below, frowning—still not satisfied.

He grabbed the intercom.

“All departments, check your personnel—now!”

Though confused, the grunts followed orders and double-checked their teams.

Ten minutes later…

Giovanni received reports: a squad leader from the Execution Division was missing, and something was off about the gate guards’ voices.

Bang!

Giovanni’s fist slammed into the railing. “August…!”

This style could only be August’s.

Good thing he was cautious—if he hadn’t been, August might’ve made it right to his face before he even noticed.

But now that August had been discovered, the initiative was his.

A cold smile spread across Giovanni’s face as he gave his orders: “Shut down the experiment. Destroy all tranquilizer gas. Full combat readiness. Sweep Po Town from top to bottom—find the rats who sneaked in!”

After a string of commands, Giovanni recalled Deoxys and slipped on a pair of gloves from his pocket.

Today, he would settle things with August once and for all.

Just as August and Gary slipped into a warehouse, they heard a commotion outside.

Rocket was clearly searching for something.

Judging by the situation, it was obvious the squad leader’s disappearance had been noticed.

“As expected of Giovanni,” August mused.

Gary: “Still joking? August, you screwed up!”

Infiltration failed.

But August, watching Rocket outside, didn’t look bothered at all.

Instead, he glanced out the window and grinned. “Screwed up? I think things are just getting started.”

He pulled out his communicator. “President Lusamine, activate Plan B!”

“Plan B?”

Gary looked blank—what Plan B?

He barely finished the thought before the sound of a massive explosion rocked the air outside.

BOOM!

With the walls collapsing and alarms blaring across Po Town, every Rocket grunt raced toward the blast zone.

“So this is Plan B?”

Gary was dumbfounded. How was this different from a full-frontal assault?

Now he understood why August had only brought him along.

“Of course there’s a difference! Now I don’t have to deal with all the grunts—I can go straight for Giovanni!”

August got up, brushing dust off his uniform. “Let’s go. The path’s clear, and Giovanni’s waiting for us. No point keeping him waiting!”
