Pokémon: My Titles Know No Limits! [403]

"Good, you won't regret your decision today!" With that, August handed Adaman a phone.

"This is...?" Adaman looked puzzled.

As a native of ancient Hisui, a phone was well beyond anything he'd ever imagined.

"It's a communicator. You can use it to contact me," August explained.

He demonstrated the basics for Adaman, who, being sharp enough to lead the Diamond Clan, picked it up quickly.

Especially after August taught him how to play a single-player Pokémon battle game—Adaman immediately gave him a thumbs-up. Joining the Origin Rocket Team was clearly the right choice!

August left the Diamond Clan’s headquarters, then made his way to the Pearl Clan’s camp to find Irida.

He gave her the same pitch he’d used on Adaman: "Adaman's already joined our Origin Rocket Team and earned Dialga’s approval. Irida, you don't want to fall behind, do you?"

So Irida and her Pearl Clan also became a subsidiary organization under the Origin Rocket Team.

By leveraging his information advantage, August successfully brought both the Diamond and Pearl Clans under his banner.

Zinnia watched, wide-eyed.

You can do that?

Irida glanced at Zinnia. "What's with you?"

August looked over and waved his hand. "Don't mind her. She gets like this a few days every month."

Irida and Zinnia exchanged looks of mutual understanding.

"So, have you thought it over?" August asked. "Want to come with me to Alola?"

Irida was clearly tempted. "But what about the Pearl Clan…?"

August pressed his advantage: "That's what Calaba is for—just let her be acting leader, right? It's only a trip, not like you'll never come back!"

"Akari and Arezu have already said they're coming!"

That finally convinced Irida. She nodded. "I'll come to headquarters tomorrow on time!"

After leaving the Pearl Clan’s camp, Zinnia asked, "Akari and Arezu are coming to Alola? You didn’t just make that up to trick Irida, did you…?"

August was righteously indignant. "Trick? I prefer 'benevolent deception'—helping Irida make the decision she really wants deep down."

If Irida hadn’t wanted to go, pushing her into it would be trickery. But she already wanted to—August just gave her a little nudge.

Zinnia: "…"

No wonder he can juggle Blue, Sabrina, and Cynthia without getting burned…

If not for the black swan event that was Lusamine, August probably couldn’t ever get in real trouble.

Afterward, Zinnia followed August to find Arezu, who wanted to open a hair salon. They used the news that Irida and Akari were going, plus the chance to see the latest trends in the world, to persuade her to join as well.

Akari was the easiest.

She’d already planned to go with August to see Alola for herself and had even gotten time off from the Galaxy Team.

Her reason: she was fascinated by August’s stories of people and Pokémon living in harmony, and wanted to observe, then bring those changes back to Hisui.

"See? I didn't lie at all!" August said to Zinnia.

Zinnia: "..."

You’re the boss. Whatever you say.

Lie? Who’s lying?

Akari looked utterly confused—she hadn’t understood a word of what just happened.

Once August finished handling everything in Hisui and made sure the Origin Rocket Team was on track, he prepared to leave.

From the Galaxy Team, Cyllene came to see him off.

"No matter what, thank you, Mr. August, for everything you've done for Hisui," Cyllene said sincerely.

It made August feel a little embarrassed.

After all, he’d spent the last few days poaching the Galaxy Team’s people. And Cyllene’s own descendant, Cyrus, was still locked up in… the Kanto division’s basement.

He decided he should give something back. "Cyllene, are you interested in joining the Origin Rocket Team?"

She was stunned, taking a while to process before she chuckled and shook her head. "I’ll pass. I’m the Investigation Team’s captain—if I jumped ship, I think Commander Kamado might actually lose his mind."

"Pity."

With the farewells done, August rejoined the Kanto crew, opened his app, and hit the return button.

A massive golden rift opened beneath them, swallowing everyone up.

Cyllene was left alone in the room. Just then, Kamado stormed in. "Where’s August?"

He’d more or less given up, but what August had pulled these past few days was outrageous—even the Diamond and Pearl Clans had been absorbed into August’s team.

If he hadn’t run into Adaman on the way here, he’d still be in the dark.

Cyllene pointed to the spot where the rift had just closed. "Gone."

Nanu stopped, took out a Poké Ball, and said irritably, "He didn’t even say goodbye… And I even had a present for him!"

He opened the ball, revealing a Rowlet who was dozing off.

Unlike normal Rowlet, this one’s feathers were green, not brown.

Cyllene smiled. "The Origin Rocket Team is still around. August will be back—give it to him then."

"I guess so." Kamado recalled Rowlet. "The moment he gets back, tell me. I’ve got to have a word with him!"

Alola
Aether Paradise Research Sector

Wicke’s eyes were glued to the main screen, her face growing ever more serious as the shrill alarm blared.

"Ms. Wicke, that's the seventh alarm today!" a researcher reported.

Wicke nodded, saying nothing.

But silence didn’t mean it wasn’t urgent.

On the contrary—every alarm meant another Ultra Wormhole had opened. Starting a week ago, the UB Monitoring Center had begun sending out alerts. At first, Wicke thought it was just an Ultra Beast accidentally crossing into Alola.

It had happened before.

Usually, you just waited for the Ultra Beast to appear, then sent someone to handle it.

But this time, no Ultra Beast had shown up, and instead, the alarms kept coming—first once or twice a day, now up to seven times.

That’s when Wicke realized the situation was dire.

Someone was experimenting with opening Ultra Wormholes—and making rapid progress!

Faba’s later emails confirmed it: it was Team Rocket, the very group that once took over Aether Paradise!

Wicke had no idea how Team Rocket could open Ultra Wormholes so quickly without Cosmog, but whatever the reason, this was not good news for the Foundation.

If Team Rocket mastered the Ultra Beasts’ power… The consequences were unthinkable.

She wanted to stop them, but there was nothing she could do.

President Lusamine, Mr. August, please come back soon! Wicke prayed inwardly.

As if in answer, a familiar voice sounded in her Bluetooth earpiece.

[Wicke, come to the Conservation Area.]

Relief washed over Wicke. She quickly composed herself. "Yes, President. I’ll be right there!"

---

"So this is Alola?" Akari looked around curiously.

A massive garden surrounded by metal walls, teeming with all kinds of Pokémon—some familiar, some not.

August shook his head. "This is just the Conservation Area at Aether Paradise, the Foundation's headquarters."

"President Lusamine, could you do the honors?"

Lusamine smiled and stood, her eyes bright. "The Aether Foundation is dedicated to Pokémon protection. Our main work is research and rescuing injured wild Pokémon…"

Akari, Arezu, and Irida listened, bewildered.

To them, born in Hisui, wild Pokémon were dangerous—they’d never imagined people would rescue wild Pokémon.

August smiled, spreading his arms. "Welcome to this era!"

"Here, humans and wild Pokémon aren’t enemies anymore. Pokémon are our trusted partners."

"So the world’s at peace?" Arezu asked.

August considered. "In a sense. But honestly, this place is even more dangerous than Hisui…"

Akari was confused. "How?"

"Because of all the evil organizations…" August shrugged. "Day to day, it’s very safe. But peaceful times breed wild ambitions—there are always people who want to do something big, even destroy the world."

A clear jab at Cyrus.

Akari couldn’t understand—without survival pressure, life sounded perfect to her. Why would anyone want to wreck it?

But Irida, as Pearl Clan leader, had seen more of the world, and August’s words left her thoughtful.

"Let’s not dwell on that," August said. "You’ll probably need time to get used to things here—Blue will show you the ropes."

Blue nodded and led the three of them to help them adapt to modern society.

Zinnia pulled Yellow, Lillie, and Sapphire over to join in.

Just then, Wicke rushed in clutching a stack of folders, breathless from running.

She stared at the unfamiliar faces, momentarily confused, then simply assumed they were August’s new recruits.

Catching her breath, she reported to Lusamine and August, "President, Mr. August, Team Rocket started their Ultra Wormhole experiments a week ago and they’ve made huge progress…"

She quickly summarized recent events.

Then looked nervously at Lusamine and August. "President, Mr. August, what do we do?"

Lusamine frowned. "I never knew Faba had this much talent…"

As a researcher, Faba was nothing special. Even at Aether Foundation, and with Cosmog, he’d spent years getting nowhere.

Now, away from Aether and without Cosmog, he’d made breakthroughs in just days.

Maybe the Foundation was holding him back?

While Lusamine was lost in self-doubt, August offered his take. "It’s probably Team Rocket’s other scientists doing the heavy lifting."

Back on New Island, he’d arrested a batch of Team Rocket researchers, but since most weren’t serious criminals, only the core group stayed locked up—Team Rocket had gotten the rest out on bail.

So Rocket’s research power hadn’t taken much of a hit.

Now, with Ultra Wormholes popping up everywhere, there was only one explanation: Rocket was all in.

"So, what do we do?" Lusamine asked August.

Ultra Beasts weren’t easy to handle.

August glanced at Cogita, standing by Cynthia. "Don’t worry—our reinforcements are way stronger than Giovanni’s."

What’s an Ultra Beast compared to this? Giovanni was in for a true god-shock.

"August’s right!" Gary strode forward, Suicune at his side, chest puffed out. "Ultra Beasts? Child’s play! With Gary Oak here, nothing to worry about!"

August: (?_?)

Who said anything about you?

But seeing Gary so fired up, August patted him on the shoulder. "Alright then—when it’s time to fight Team Rocket, you’ll lead the charge!"

Gary: "…?"

I was just talking, you know! You don’t have to take it seriously!

Sabrina snorted with laughter.

Noticing the looks, she waved her hands, still holding her aching stomach, and went to find Blue.

Having Sabrina laugh at him lit a fire under Gary. He’d wanted to chicken out and back off, but now—

He was a Legendary Pokémon trainer! What was there to fear? It was just Team Rocket! With Suicune by his side, he could take them!

Bring it on!

Gary stood tall again.

Po Town
Team Rocket Alola Branch

Giovanni watched as the Ultra Wormhole opened. A musclebound Buzzwole burst out, immediately trying to smash the nearby research facility, but Deoxys switched to Attack Forme, its eyes glowing blue.

Invisible psychic power descended.

BOOM!

Buzzwole was slammed to the ground as if crushed by a hundred thousand tons of force.

But it wasn’t about to give up so easily.

Its already bulging muscles swelled even further, nearly bursting as Buzzwole fought to stand, straining against Deoxys’s [Psychic].

But just then, Rocket grunts aimed gas sprayers at Buzzwole, releasing a cloud of tranquilizer.

The moment Buzzwole inhaled, all its strength drained away. It collapsed, totally incapacitated.

Giovanni smiled. “That makes five Buzzwole so far. All thanks to you, Dr. Zambo, for developing that Ultra Beast-specific tranquilizer. Otherwise, catching these things would’ve been much more trouble.”

“…It’s Namba,” came the tired correction, before Dr. Namba added, “All these Ultra Beasts share a trait. Once you target that, it’s easy to make a specialized sedative.”

Ultra Beasts have the ability known as [Beast Boost]—the more they defeat, the stronger they become.

Namba had used this to design a tranquilizer that actually reversed their power-up effect.

He watched as the grunts loaded the unconscious Buzzwole into a freshly manufactured Beast Ball. Research staff filed in to prepare for the next wormhole opening. Namba said, “Boss, that Faba… something’s off about him.”

Giovanni kept his gaze on Deoxys. “Don’t worry.”

Hearing Giovanni’s confidence, Namba didn’t press further. “Then I’ll return to my research…”

With a nod from Giovanni, Namba cut the hologram and vanished.

Giovanni stood alone on the high platform, watching Faba moving among the researchers, a faint smile playing at his lips.

This is the first trap I’ve prepared for August.

With that clever, self-assured personality of his… will he take the bait?

Aether Paradise

Mew was chasing a Steenee all around the conservation area.

August sat on the sofa, turning to Wicke. “You’re saying Faba messaged you, wanting to defect?”

Wicke nodded.

“Could it be a trap?” That was August’s first instinct.

“According to Faba, he’s realized how wrong he was to join Team Rocket and wants to atone.”

She handed over a printout of Faba’s email.

It opened with a whole paragraph of Faba’s supposed guilt and repentance, which August skipped, scanning straight for the main points.

Faba revealed that Team Rocket had made real progress in opening Ultra Wormholes.

He claimed, For the sake of world peace, Ultra Beasts must not fall into the hands of an evil organization like Team Rocket. We must bring them to justice before they collect too many!

And Faba offered to act as an inside agent for the Aether Foundation.

“You think he’s telling the truth?” August asked.

His understanding of Faba was mostly from files—if anyone really knew him, it would be Lusamine as his boss and Wicke as his colleague.

Wicke thought for a moment. “I think he’s partly telling the truth…”

Her reasoning was simple: if Team Rocket could open Ultra Wormholes so quickly without Cosmog, Faba clearly wasn’t in charge.

So his betrayal made sense—he’d been sidelined, excluded from the inner circle.

In short: he’d been cast aside.

“With what I know of Faba’s personality… If he can’t get what he wants, he’ll turn spiteful. This fits him,” Wicke said.

Lusamine nodded in agreement.

August: “…”

It’s fine to nod, but why do you have to keep inching closer to me?

And Mew—what are you doing to Steenee?

Don’t lick that!

Back to business: since both Lusamine and Wicke found it plausible, August trusted their judgment.

But…

“Does Giovanni know?” August mused.

He was pretty sure Giovanni did.

Giovanni wasn’t a fool like Maxie or Archie, and Faba wasn’t nearly clever enough to fool him completely.

He glanced down at Faba’s emails again, a playful look on his face.

Is it a trap?

Even if it was, the mail contained useful info—like Giovanni’s base being in Po Town, and Team Rocket already capturing Ultra Beasts in large numbers…

“What do we do?” Wicke looked right at August.

She knew only he could truly counter Team Rocket.

After a moment’s thought, August said, “We strike first.”

“Mew!”

Mew, with one hand on Steenee and the other waving a tiny fist, voiced her agreement.

August: “…You’ve already scared Steenee unconscious!”

Although it was certain Team Rocket was in Po Town and actively summoning Ultra Beasts, August didn’t rush out immediately.

First, he didn’t fully trust Faba’s intel and wanted to confirm it through other sources.

Second, it was nearly dark—and he wasn’t about to ruin his Pokémon Sleep schedule for anything.

...

Dinner time.

August was lecturing Mew: “Sure, Steenee’s sweat can be used as fruit juice, but you can’t just hold it down and lick it!”

“Look, you’ve traumatized Steenee!”

Mew sneaked a look at Steenee, who shrank into a corner the moment she saw Mew watching.

“Go apologize to Steenee. If she doesn’t come out, no more cupcakes for you tonight.”

“Mew…” Mew looked reluctant.

But, faced with the threat to her dessert, she grabbed a cupcake and shuffled over to the still-terrified Steenee.

Mew broke off a piece of the cupcake—paused, took a bite herself, then handed the rest to Steenee.

“Mew~!”

Steenee was stunned. She hadn’t expected Mew to actually bring her food.

Seeing Mew acting so differently from the ‘bully’ she’d been all day, Steenee mustered the courage to take the piece and tried a bite.

The taste was beyond anything she’d ever known—pure bliss spreading across her face.

With Steenee perking up, Mew sighed in relief. Her cupcake was saved!

But then…

Shoom!

The happy Steenee released a sweet fragrance, filling the dining hall.

Everyone turned.

Even Cogita glanced up at Steenee.

The moment Steenee realized everyone was staring, she panicked and dashed back to her corner.

“Mew!”

Mew stared, wide-eyed, as if watching her cupcakes float away.

Her eyes darted back and forth—then she zipped over to Gengar, rummaged in its belly, and her face lit up as she pulled out a Poké Ball.

Hiding it behind her back, she performed a little routine to get Steenee’s attention—then, as soon as Steenee was watching, Mew bonked her on the head with the Poké Ball.

Thud!

The Poké Ball hit with a satisfyingly healthy sound.

Flash!

A dazed Steenee was sucked in.

Mew flew to August, hugging the Poké Ball, eager for praise. “Mew~!”

August: “?”

I told you to apologize, not to catch her!

“Mew~!” Mew stood, hands on hips.

You can’t deny Steenee came out of her shell!

August had to admit, Steenee had indeed come out of hiding.

Sighing, he resigned himself to handling the aftermath—soothing Steenee’s nerves for Mew.

He took the Poké Ball, released Steenee, and gave her a Grass-type Pokémon’s favorite Pokéblock. “Don’t worry, Mew won’t bully you again.”

He let out a pulse of viridian energy.

Sensing the gentle forest aura, Steenee’s nerves melted away, replaced by comfort—and maybe even enjoyment.

Her leaf curled out, stretching happily.

After that… Steenee refused to leave August’s side!

She clung to his lap, and if he so much as mentioned letting her go, she’d burst into tears, leaving August helpless.

“…Honestly.”

He never expected to catch a Steenee this way.

“Eevee?”

Eevee padded over, sniffing Steenee with curiosity, clearly delighted to have a fragrant new companion.

Gardevoir, meanwhile, gave Steenee a single glance before looking away.

Not a threat at all.

With Steenee around, the air in the house seemed fresher—August soon drifted into a deep sleep that night.

So the next morning, August woke up earlier than usual.

But someone else was up even earlier.

When August entered the dining room, he found Cogita already there, sipping tea and reading the newspaper.

He considered slipping out, but Cogita put down her cup and looked his way.

With no choice, August braced himself and greeted her. “Morning, Cogita. What brings you up so early?”

Cogita gave him a playful look. “For an immortal, sleep isn’t exactly necessary.”

“…What a humblebrag,” August thought.

Are you really just going to admit you’re immortal like that?

Cogita clearly didn’t care. She brushed her hair aside. “Now that you mention it, I don’t think we’ve ever had a private chat.”

“What did you want to talk about?” August asked.

“Aren’t you even a little curious about me?” she teased.

August shook his head immediately. “Not curious at all!”

His bluntness caught even Cogita off guard.

She was silent for a while, then fixed him with a deep look. “Then let’s talk about why you’ve been avoiding me.”

August considered. “Uh… can we go back to the last topic instead?”

Cogita burst out laughing.

BANG!

She slapped a pink stone tablet down on the table.

The sight made August sit up straight. “Whatever you want to talk about, let’s talk—just please, no slapping the Plate!”
