Squid Game Ep. 1

Battle Royale is a movie, a good one, but is based off a manga, which is even better. In my opinion, Squid Game wants to have social commentary on capitalism and greed but doesn't do it correctly. A better criticism of capitalism would be in the movie parasite. It depicts it beautifully and in a way that isn't just black and white. Comparing the rich people in both of these 2 and it is as clear as day. The VIPs in Squid Game are shallow empty characters who are terribly acted while in Parasite, the rich family is more nuanced and ignorant of the fact of what people are going through for people who aren't as well off as them.

There is a whole genre of this type of stuff, where people either are forced to play crazy games or choose to due to desperation. The classics of the genre would be a movie called Battle Royale (its a Japanese movie). Also the movie Cube is excellent. Steven King has written two great novellas, The Running Man (which was turned into a Arnold Schwarzenegger movie) and the excellent The Long Walk. Your reactions are understandable. I am really only watching this because I like your take on stuff. I probably would have seen it eventually but I was not in a rush to. I mentioned some of the classics of the genre above. It would be interesting if they opened each episode with the back story of one of the surviving characters and then had the next game. In my experience, you watch this genre for one of two things. Either for the shock of value of the plot twists, like say in Saw or Cube. Or for the dystopian social commentary that the show is making. Or I guess both. This show seems to lean towards dystopian social commentary rather than plot twist shock value.
