I always thought that tied the arc together really well, with Asuma only finally understanding what his dad was trying to teach him once he had a kid of his own on the way. It explains his motivation to quit smoking, something which seemed pretty sudden and out of character initially. It also makes the other episodes feel different to me. Like in 82 when you see all the children in the village throughout the episode, or the scene where he tries to tell Kakashi something in the hospital, but gets interrupted.
