The author likely could of put more research into this, but he did have some understanding. The Empire did have to adapt to deal with a modern military, but they were hobbled by the fact they didn't understand it. Magic does complicate things, but the Empire doesn't seem to have any magic users in their army for what ever reason. The mages are off to the side doing their own thing and the blue haired girl was a civilian mage who was displaced by a magical monster waking up. The characters from Earth never develop magical powers.
The anime ends before the battles really pick up. After some quick battles the fighting dies down for a while as the JSDF takes stock of what's going on and politics comes into play. There are some artistic licenses used. For example the US should of sent reinforcements to help repel the Empire's surprise attack, as the battle lasted long enough for US troops to arrive. Japan and the US have a mutual defense treaty, so the Empire effectively attacked the US when they attacked Japan. Admittedly there no way of bringing aircraft carriers or satellites over, eliminating some of the US's biggest advantages.

It’s a really good anime, Japan pats themselves on the back a bit but it’s a solid pick

The show does have a lot of focus on the military aspects of the fighting but also the political aspect of how Japan and the rest of the world would react to this gate to another world opening. Overall I think it’s a real solid show
