Yea I think Gurren Lagann did that with Kamina's dad. Even though that relationship is much different than Zoro and Kuina, it is a reminder to their mortality which is to not let death get in the way of succeeding. That you can carry on an inherited will or a shared dream.

2023-10-24 22:07:56 +0000 UTCHer death is just a sign that anybody can die from anything and you have to try to achieve your dreams while you are alive / Not everyone gets the chance to achieve their dreams.

2023-10-24 20:48:49 +0000 UTCOne of these episodes of Luffy fighting Kuro was the first episode I ever saw of One Piece when I was a kid one morning before school. I remember watching it and thinking it looked lame af. Why would I wanna watch this when I could watch a dude who's hair turns gold when he yells??????????

2023-10-24 10:36:48 +0000 UTCI subscribe to the idea that Kuina dying in a random accident in such a meaningless way is meant to be that way to give more depth to Zoro's character. They made a promise to reach for the highest heights, and through some dumb, boring, uneventful death, she is just snuffed out. No grandiose anime death, no final words, but honestly people do die like that. Accidents happen. Zoro never even had a chance to beat her. Now he carries her spirit with him. It teaches him that death can come at any minute, for anyone, for the stupidest of reasons. Therefore, you absolutely cannot let it hold you back in the pursuit of your dreams.

2023-10-24 10:31:32 +0000 UTCThe "falling down the stairs is a Japanese euphemism for suicide"-thing is a decade old lie that was started by some random mf on the One Piece subreddit and has been regurgitated so often (similar to the "you eat 8 spiders in your sleep"-thing) that so many people in the community genuinely still to this day believe it. However, that doesn't take away the possibility of Oda simply using it as his way of sugarcoating her (potential) suicide...though I really doubt that.

2023-10-24 10:31:23 +0000 UTCyeah, I guess every time that it's vague in the Anime because it's PG, let's point it out that it's different in Manga so they wouldn't get swayed and hopes that characters are coming back or something

2023-10-24 09:57:40 +0000 UTCAlso worth mentioning, what gives future arcs that advantage is years of set up, and one can argue that the entirety of East Blue was just a prologue for a more grand story.

2023-10-24 09:31:37 +0000 UTCI mean I think the narative of the story and the logic behind certain things was at its lowest in these early portions of the story. For all the flaws that carson pointed out in this arc and the arcs before it, you see very little of those types of things in future stories. its strange but i think at some point, oda's writing just goes through a dramatic transformation. Almost as if your watching a different show. Not sure if that has to do with maybe his editors at the time or potentually maybe this was just a prototype part of the story before he expanded upon it or maybe his audience changed, but there is a clear difference in the quality of the manga in future arcs from the execution of specific plot points to the deep anlaysis of the characters them selfs. I think that is why some people say this is where the real OP begins.

2023-10-24 09:27:46 +0000 UTCI appreciate Carson's observation regarding how "the plot" can hinder certain characters from advancing and how it relates to the main cast. As Carson pointed out, Kuina's inability to pursue her dream serves as another example of the King of the Pirate's speech that initiates the entire series: "Inherited Will, the Flow of Time, and the Dreams of its people... These are things that cannot be stopped. As long as people continue to pursue the meaning of freedom, these things will never cease to be." These themes become increasingly evident as the story unfolds, as demonstrated in Carson's analysis, particularly concerning the concept of inherited will. This arc receives a significant amount of criticism, even from fans. Many consider it the weakest arc in the entire series. However, it does offer a heartwarming and adorable conclusion, bringing the Syrup Village arc to an end. So, let's set sail!

2023-10-24 08:31:55 +0000 UTCThe thing about Kuina's death being suicide because of "falling down stairs" being a euphemism isn't true or at the very least isn't back up by anything Oda has ever said. I've heard it a ton as well but there's nothing that corroborates that being a euphemism in japan. Its just one of those things that people hear and repeat because it seems to fit. I believe her death is just supposed to have been an accident.

2023-10-24 08:11:12 +0000 UTCLow expectations are fine though. They'll just be more blown away when those expectations are surpassed. It's not like they're not enjoying One Piece or are planning to stop it.
