I'm a week late but... to make things a bit easier to understand for the inside and outside thing: Zodiac members and direct family of them are all in the inner circle of the know and are permitted to live within the inner ring of the Soma estate. Those of the Soma clan that don't know are on the outside of the know and live in the outer ring of the Soma estate. There are Zodiac members who don't live within the inner circle of the estate, so they live outside but they aren't 'outside' of the know. It's confusing, I get it :/

Oh, ok. I see your point! Sorry. I'll edit my comment in case they haven't seen it yet. I just wanted to help clarify a few points they seemed confused about and did not want the confusion to impact their view of the story but yeah, makes sense! Thanks.

I know you have good intentions but saying "There's more to this but I won't say it because it's a spoiler" is technically a spoiler. Because you're still pointing at something and saying "This is going to be relevant in the future!" and affecting their perception of the series going forward.

BirthdayParty

Not-So-Fun Fact: The mangaka of Fruits Basket has gone on record in supplementary materials to say that if Tohru had left Kyo there, Kyo probably would've committed suicide.

BirthdayParty

The latter part (The physical wall dividing the inside and outside portions of the Sohma estate) is what the Sohma's refer to when they talk about Zodiac's "living in the outside". Akane, Yuki, Shigure and Kyo are all "living in the Outside" because they live outside of the Sohma estate on their own, but they're still considered part of the "Inside".

BirthdayParty

It’s briefly shown but basically when Akito refers to the “disgusting cat” this is the form he’s talking about. Remember that Kyo’s cat spirit is basically reincarnated basically to a life of rejection. What better way to accomplish that than to turn him into a monster that smells like rotting flesh. This has caused Kyo to continue to reject people before he can be rejected since he’s never been accepted in his life. Shisho felt he wouldn’t be able to handle another person see his true form and reject him, especially someone who has managed to break past his walls like Tohru has so far. He saw Tohru and felt that she *would* be able to accept all of him. Great discussion, as always.

I love this episode! I can't lie, I definitely shed some tears when I first watched it... the characters of Fruit Basket always end up saying things that resonate with me and that I can relate to. someone already mentioned it this is also the first time in the series that Kyo calls Tohru by her name, it's a small detail that is easy to miss but already shows character development for Kyo. S1 is great but from here onwards the story gets even better imo! :)

There seems to be a small misunderstanding about “inside” and “outside”. Kyo is considered the outcast, but he’s still in the “inside” part of the Sohma family just because he’s a zodiac. Anyone close to the main family/serves the main main family (ie, Akito) is part of the inside, as well as anyone who officially knows about the zodiac curse such as close relatives of the Zodiacs (Kazuma is technically considered on the inside due to his relation to the previous cat spirit person, he just lives on the outside like most of the zodiac parents). That means every family of a zodiac spirit is considered on the inside, such as Kagura’s parents, Kisa’s, Yuki and Ayame’s, etc, etc. Most of them just live in the outside (Momiji’s parents live in the outside, also Ritsu’s mom, etc). The people considered on the “outside” are members of the Sohma family who are not aware of the curse, like Kana. Majority of the Sohma clan are considered in the outside (there’s also physical walls in the Sohma estate that divides where the Inside and Outside Sohmas live, further emphasizing the difference between the two).

I have my own theory about why the true form exists as it does but that’s later story spoilers. For now, the true form is mainly to reinforce the cat’s status as a social pariah/family scapegoat. I love that this episode was also really good development for Tohru. If she had handled this situation the way she usually did in the story so far - by not acknowledging her feelings and pretending there wasn’t an issue - she wouldn’t have been able to bring Kyo back.

Kyo looking cute as heck at the end in cat form. My cat would never be that calm. 🤧 This was such a good tearjerker episode and it's a good setup for the next season.

I absolutely love the way Fruits Basket handles the theme of accepting one's bad sides. It isn't just as simple as "I'll love all of you" or "I'll accept every part of you". It's important to acknowledge the struggles, to properly face and listen to these bad sides, and having someone to carry that burden with him was all that Kyo wanted.

Still makes me emotional after so many years. I cannot remember if they explain more about his true form later,so i won't say much. Tohru really saved him in that episode

This episode is so good. The whole revelation is done pretty well. A few details about this that are important: - The boy in the cage scene is Kazuma as a child, not Kyo. As Kagura mentioned, his grandpa was the cat spirit before Kyo. - The other form is something only Kyo has it and that is somewhat related to him being an "inferior zodiac member" - Remember when Momiji told about his mom, he mentioned that most of the zodiac parents are either repulsed and reject their children or become extra overprotective? Kyo's mom was the second. - This was the first time that Kyo called Tohru by her name! The whole season you will get him calling her just as hey, that girl, you etc. Now he embraces her, acknowledges her, and admits to himself that he wants to stay by her side.
