2023-11-05 17:48:46 +0000 UTCGreat reaction and discussion as usual. I also like the ending and when it was first released I was surprised by how divisive it was. Also yes this is the same ending as in the manga when you buy the collected volumes. The epilogue that plays over the end credits however wasn't in the original release of the chapter. When the chapter was first serialized in the magazine it ended with the bird wrapping the scarf around Mikasa and that was already incredibly divisive. Then when it came time to collect the chapters for the volume releases of the series Iseyama added the epilogue that you see over the end credits and that made the ending even more divisive. I think that the added epilogue makes the series even better because it furthered the themes of the manga. Also it didn't feel pointless because while yes the cycle continues, they still managed to bring about peace for a long time and even if you can't eradicate violence and war its still meaningful to push for peace

One thing to note: the "original" ending stopped at Mikasa thanking Eren for wrapping the scarf around her. What happens during the Ending theme came later as extra pages for the final chapter. There were lots of details that were totally not there in the manga (or I really did not notice), like the 10-11 years Mikasa supposedly waited before finally being with someone for example. Thanks for noticing, I personally didn't.

2023-11-05 12:05:54 +0000 UTCI read the manga, and to me, the ending was definitely alright, but I felt like it was underwhelming. But after watching the anime, I feel like it fits perfectly. As you said, it isn't the responsibility of Eren and the other characters to create a perfect ending, because that's just not possible. And while that feels like a depressing or simple message to end it on, I think part of it is also that even though you can't save the entire world and all of the future, you can still have an impact. Even if bad things are bound to happen, even if you can't control the entire world, there are still the "little" things that you can do and that make life worth living.
