Towards the end of your conversation carson, I actually do prefer how oda isn't quite telling you things direct like in the live action. This is the problem I have with naruto. Oda likes to sprinkle mystery and subtle clues and keep the viewers guessing as to what is happening and it overall makes the story and world building more interesting in my opinion even though this is on a very small scale here at the arlong park. If the viewer is thinking "ok what if its this, and then this, maybe it could be this" with 4-5 ongoing subplots that could all tie into the same result. its that whole "style" of writing in where theorists and retrospective content creators are born. I think that is the embodiment of this entire series and what makes one piece so good. If you look at naruto, is there that many people that theorize things about that series, no because kishimoto kind of tells you everything in a very direct fashion and at face value unlike oda. Alligorical writing that conveys complex abstract story telling can be used to a great extent as long as the narative pieces are resolved in the end couple that with certain things he has planned and it creates a type of mesh of idea's that feel more consistent through its plot progression. In away oda can use this to his strenghs to subvert expectations easly because only he knows the real answer, the viewers don't. Though I do feel like I should have brought this subject up where it matters most lol but I was just kind of answering your concerns about the differences between LA and the manga story in terms of how the story is written. You are obvously viewing this through the lens of drawing parallels to the LA as well so it will be different when you go beyond that material and you might get a diff perspective on things.

2023-11-09 16:00:28 +0000 UTCI feel like you need the fluff if you’re trying to create a huge epic to make it feel like a long journey. The Iliad and The Odyssey had a lot of fluff.

2023-11-09 12:42:36 +0000 UTCThe race plot is a very big thing in One Piece, especially later on, Arlong Park is definitely a setup but it's still kind of vague compared to the live-action as it was pretty early on in the story and Oda didn't fully have quite a clear vision on where he wants to drive the story to, whereas in the live-action, it's coming after +25 years plus of storytelling where Oda has already realized the idea he was going for. I gotta say, I was pretty sad the live-action didn't include Hachi, but I guess choreographing an octopus saved up a lot of budget. Also, a node to how Yosaku mentioned the existence of "THREE" powers that rule over the Grand Line, one of which is the Seven Warlords.

2023-11-09 10:01:32 +0000 UTCThe live action definitely highlighted racism much more aggressively. It's more subtle here but 100% setup, and I'm not going to say how 😁 I'm glad the Live Action brought the focus of it forward because it was a great lil hook to keep people interested while waiting so long for another season, but I also love how subtle it is here for reasons that will become clear later 💪

2023-11-09 06:31:15 +0000 UTCAs you noted, giants are "kyojin" while fishmen are "gyojin." I always heard the similarity but finally went and confirmed. Similarly, humans are "ningen" while merfolk are "ningyo." I often had trouble with distinguishing them all.

2023-11-09 05:17:57 +0000 UTCTo answer your question about the racial element surrounding the Fishmen, the analogies to the African American experience in the US definitely exists in the manga/anime and is very intentional. Those parallels are explored more explicitly in a later arc.
