I absolutely agree with this. But I liked this episode from the start. It has great environmental story telling to reinforce what the characters are going through. Nowhere to go, nothing to do, no goal to reach...just wide open spaces. I think it does a great job of being peaceful but really uneasy at the same time.

Yeah, I don't think I really liked this episode when I first watched it either. I remember feeling like the story was really unmoored and I was impatient to get to the next main part of the story. I knew that the story was going to be totally different from this point on, so I was impatient to see if I would like it or not. But looking back on it, I can see how important this is for characterization, and especially for Shin's character. It's like he's feeling that same sense of being adrift that we are as the audience, but, unlike us, he thinks he's going to die very soon so he has just decided to live in this moment and enjoy it. He doesn't think he has a future, so he's not searching for anything.

If you pause at 23:12 you might see something pretty interesting.

In a show like this I think a slice of life episode is welcome considering most of the people you're rooting for could die or have died up until this point. It was just a nice moment's reprieve for them. Then having fido just really show you all the friend's they've lost and the pain they show behind closed doors just ties it all together.

I think this episode is amazing. The ost, directing, using fido as tool to flashback to character interactions I thought it was great. Considering most of the content in this episode is anime original crafted from a paragraph from the LN.

I've rewatched the anime quite a few times and this episode is definitely one I skip most times aside from the end credits scene which I love. While there isn't that much happening, I think it's interesting seeing Shin's almost 180 in personality and how his friends feel about it and if he is genuinely at peace or if it's a facade among other things you could dive into regarding his/their psyche after getting freedom for the first time in their lives.

This episode is actually anime original. That might be why you did not like it as much as Lindsay did. It is possible that you got some of those filler vibes from it.
