Yeah reading recent CH now in one piece, you would never think that its the same man that wrote these, but I think shonen in general was very tropy in the 1990's and especially since it was more targeted towards the kids in japan. As the years have progressed obvously the target audiences have changed and of course authors are becoming alot smarter and so likewise in later years, the writing becomes more clevery executed without relying on tiresome convenient tropes to push the story forward.

However, in the live-action rendition, the encounter appears to be more one-sided, with Arlong having the upper hand to the extent that Luffy concedes, saying, "I can't beat you." Moreover, it's worth noting that the events at Baratie and Arlong Park likely unfolded on the same day, given the proximity of the island to the Baratie. It must have been quite an eventful and unpredictable day for Luffy and the crew.
