Arlong *seeming* more trustworthy also makes it more believable that Nami would trust him to keep his word! Yeah, you could say that each person in the crew gets their chance to see Nami's true colours. Except for Luffy, who doesn't need it. The scene with Usopp beign a "ghost" isn't in the manga at all, it's anime padding. Luffy knows when Nami isn't speaking the truth, he's just waiting for her to tell him how she really feels. He's a very good judge of character when it matters. I didnt' quite catch what Zoro said here in the anime, but in the manga he says, when Sanji wonders if she really killed Usopp that: "I called her small fry, so maybe that set her off and she took him down because it really got to her". But he's smiling kind of crookedly when he says it so it looks more like a joke. Lindsey is right, I think, no one really believes it at that point. There's nothing about not hitting vital points of the marine commodore in the manga, but yeah, adding it to the anime doesn't make any sense anyway because *they all drown*. On screen! Oda likes his buildup, as you might have noticed. But the anime padding sometimes intereferes in a weird way, and often makes the middle of the arcs drag (although the Kuro pirates was too long in the manga as well, I think).

I know he didn't know what her true plan was in the LA, but his insistence that he doesn't care about the background because he knows Nami is good was lost IMO. It is vintage Luffy to trust his gut.
