Fruits Basket Season 2 Ep 10 UNCUT REACTION

Comments

It’s not they can’t just say no bc Akito has power over them it’s also because of the verbal and physical abuse he has done to them for years. On top of that Akito can get away with it bc everyone on the family views him as a god. So for years he has verbally and physically abused them and bc of his manipulation he knows that they won’t leave. When you are abused it’s not that easy to just to say no. Especially when the one abusing you has power. So even if they leave the house Akito one day might be bored or at some point they have to meet up again and Akito can just abuse them and make sure they do what he says. It’s a cycle, Akito has power so no one can stop him, he likes mind games and to fuck with ppl and he has since young. When your young and someone like that is abusing you and no one helps you, it makes it harder to stand up to that person. It’s not as easy as you think, it’s not so easy to just say no to your abuser bc you know he can threaten you and hurt the ppl you care about and nothing will happen to him, so it’s easier to go along with it.

Also as many people have already pointed out the allegory to abusive family relationships, I'll add a fun fact that the FB author originally intended to just write a story about a large powerful family full of secrets and living by archaic rituals. Her editor made her add in the fantasy elements hence the zodiac curse was introduced. The Sohma story would still be more or less what it is without the curse.

There will soon be a discussion on Akito's powers but I don't think it's that important. Just know that while the zodiacs are bonded to him, they must follow his orders. If he actually called them up during new years and said get over here NOW, I imagine Yuki and Kyo would indeed be forced to go. However Akito doesn't use direct orders very often, partly because he believes that they should all naturally love him and not have to be commanded. And even if they leave for another country, the Sohma family is powerful enough to track them down.

@BOLDcast thank you for the response! I'd like to emphasize that I don't blame you guys at all for my feelings, i'm just autistic and fruits basket is my special interest, so i can get worked up over it.

I think from this point on we’re gonna like it a lot more. I’ve tempered my expectations based on the feedback from these eps And I still love the show. I just need to see more of it. But if you’re really feeling sad from watching our reactions, then that’s not good and you should do what’s best for you We gotta say what we gotta say, even if it’s not something people will like. But yeah I do think I’ll like it more as we go

Just to point out something that you seemed confused about but Akito being God and the head of the family is not the same thing. Although the head of the family is God, that means different things for the people involved. The head of the family is not always God since that needs to be reborn while the family will always have a head. And although it did not feel like a big revelation to you about Akito being God, it was something that was not confirmed till now. Another detail is something Tohru mentions: is the curse the bond them zodiac members to Akito? But also locks Akito? Also, Akito does not recognize that Tohru has any influence and power over the zodiac members because he does not recognize Tohru as being important at all. Shigure mentions in one episode that Akito has a very clear superiority complex (well, he is God after all and the head of the family) and he truly believes that the bond he shares with the zodiac is the ultimate law and it is above everything else. So, in his mind, he does not recognize any threats over this bond. He goes on to confront Tohru and tell her what will happen with Kyo and the others to show off his power and his control and to make it clear to her that she is delusional about thinking she will be with them in the future. About them being able to not participate in the NY festives etc, is because they do have somewhat control over some things (like living outside the main state etc) but when that happens, they have to deal with the consequences of an angry God and since Akito is a very complicated person, you never know what to expect for that punishment. Like, in this episode, Momiji tried to stop Akito in a way defying him and was abused after. I won't comment on his influence and power because that can lead to spoilers but as Lindsey mentioned, it also has to do with what they believe, how they were raised, and how that has been perpetrated for their whole lives. Carson talked a lot about why no one is rebelling or a breaking point, and that things Lindsey mentioned are related to it as well, because you can step away and leave if you do have the mental growth, the internal will and the understanding of the situation you are in, but also, Shigure, Hatori etc are older, they did not grow up being bullied, abused since birth by Akito as the others were. So they are still under that influence but they were able to have more emotional growth (not only because of their age). The animal spirits make them be rejected by their own mothers most of the time and that leaves a big mark of self-rejection but it also make them all "outsiders" for the society, they can not live freely as others and they have this group of people that would understand that situation because they are all part of the same thing, but that circle is corrupted, abusing and dangerous. So the only thing you know your whole life as a group you belong treats you like shit.

The entire story is really about breaking out of generational trauma and familial abuse so even if there wasn’t an actual curse they still wouldn’t be able to leave or defy Akito. Essentially the zodiac members have been gaslit their entire lives that they have to obey him, that nobody manners but him. All of the adults in the Soma family main branch have been telling them this as well. When every adult in your life, trusted or not, tells you something like you’re stupid, or in this instance, that your only worth is in obeying Akito and falling in line you’re going to believe it. It’s why Haru thought he was an idiot and hated Yuki, everyone was telling him that because he was the ox he was stupid and he believed them until Yuki questioned it. It’s the same thing here. All of the Zodiac members have been told their entire lives that Akito is the most important person and that their lives are only meant to serve him, so most of them believe it. The only one we see being able to actually defy him is Shigure who is trying to manipulate the situation for his own benefit and essentially he was the one who goaded Akito into coming to the beach house in the first place.

carson i think since you like plot-driven stories you're thinking too deeply about every single detail thinking it's gonna be this intricate and complicated explanation as to why a lot of things happen but this is not that type of show. again, this is a character-driven show. yes there is still a plot and yes there will be explanations for the magical stuff but you have to keep In mind that this is at its core a slice-of-life drama story with some supernatural elements in it, not the other way around. people love this show because of the characters and their growth throughout the whole story, not because it's a very plot-heavy story with very intricate magical explanations. it's a very humane show, it's not "oh this happens because of this magical reason and once that we find a magical solution everything will be normal again". again, the magical aspect is part of it but it's not the central focus. the characters and their journey is the most important thing and yes the whole curse thing is still a major element in the story but this is not a heavy magical show with a lot of powers and complicated explanations. instead, the magical supernatural stuff is mostly there to add to the human nature of it. i think once you realize that you'll be able to enjoy the show a lot more instead of being nit-picky. i appreciate the different perspective you bring but it's also important to have realistic expectations for the type of show this is.

@Reina I know it's a reaction and they're going to be honest, like I said it's not their fault at all.

Francesca White

It’s a reaction for a reason, it should not be fake. I think it’s far more interesting like this than just blindly worshipping a show bc others tell you so. Let them grasp things the way they see and don’t force certain reactions jesus Well I guess it happens with most of the shows anyway)

Reina

Man I totally am on board with you guys being honest about your thoughts every week but at the same time having my favorite show be shit on every week kind of sucks 😭 it's not your fault at all like if you feel that way you feel that way but I might just have to dip out because instead of being happy by the reactions every week I'm just starting to be sad by them

Francesca White

Something about the way you explained it actually makes WAAAAY more sense damn thank you for this

I guess one small correction about the Kyo-Akito deal is that Kyo’s fate whether he made the deal or not was that he was gonna be locked up (as all the other cat spirit predecessors were). Akito basically presented that if Kyo was ‘different’ than the cat spirit and can beat Yuki at something, Kyo won’t be locked up and will be accepted into the zodiac (which means no one in the Sohma family will have the justification to mock or belittle him anymore). Yuki himself questions why Kyo wants to be accepted by the Sohmas when Kyo gets along with normal people—though I guess in Kyo’s mindset, what’s the point of getting along with outsiders if you’re gonna be locked up forever. In a way, the deal was Kyo’s only chance of having the same amount of freedom the other zodiacs have (which isn’t a lot, but better than being locked up for eternity). Everything else you two talked about may or may not be more into spoiler territory (even simple things), but all of the circumstances and (almost) all of the agendas do basically become fully clear by s2’s finale. The plot definitely picks up from now on though (this episode basically represents the mid-season finale).
