One Piece East Blue Saga Discussion & Live Action Comparison Podcast FULL!

Comments

I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this but in terms of Zoro fighting in the live action teeth are not supposed to take horizontal force and it is in fact incredibly dangerous to the point where if you hit anything with a sword in your mouth it could easily break your teeth

As much as we all love to praise Oda as the God of Foreshadowing lmao I definitely agree. A lot of it probably boils down to him introducing or showing some bits without committing to them that, in the moment, the reader doesn't see any meaning (or any more meaning than already shown) behind it and sometimes Oda prolly neither as well, just for him to retroactively add meaningful context to some of such past story elements in a way that is still cohesive with everything that played out before, while still subverting some preconceived notions and adding a new perspective to the same story. And that is certainly a great skill to have as an author, but it is not like he has everything laid out from the start, although some may like that idea lol. I think that will also get more apparent once you get into the Math Piece side of things, where I'm sure Oda doesn't think "oh I'm gonna have this character have a moment in exactly 100chs again", but rather him going through his old stuff to see what of it he can include in this week's chapter. In regards to Arlong Park & the slavery of fishmen, I think there is instances and especially one particularly, where people might say it foreshadowed that later storyline though, which makes me think he at least had a vague idea and maybe did not wanna introduce it so early on into a kid's manga that is supposed to be fun and alladat. TLDR; Oda is a master at redefining his narrative & enriching the story by adding new layer of meaning to past events, though most of this is very likely not planned ahead (except maybe some vague ideas), but rather recontextualized much later down the line, while still not making it feel like a retcon (it essentially is one, but I mean what most people associate with that word)

A lot of the OP purists are not a fan of Garp being in the live action. While I do agree he is introduced in a more fitting way in the Anime/manga. I loved that they introduced him so early on. I think the OPLA woulda felt like something was missing if the whole Garp/Ko/meppo plot was gone. It has been really interesting watching people do the OPLA first then get into the anime especially with people completely new to anime in general. So far the reactions I have watched both ways have been all positive and amazing.

Great fun listening to the constructive analysis (whether or not we completely agree with points or smile because we're further along, it's really interesting to hear). I really hope you both do more of these talks when you get past certain arcs/stages of the story. Like to hear whether and when you feel like the plotting style has evolved in some way, or you've changed your mind on some of the things you assumed whether it is characters, intent, story etc. Would love to listen in to you discussing some of the points you made here with hindsight.

we;re not sure yet, we're gonna try to binge the rest of the show to see if we want to continue posting it to YT, cause from eps 10-10 we hardly had any reaction to anything that happened, and we just dont want to make bad videos with little reaction. SO if the ending is really good and we have a reaction to it, then we'll consider continuing it, but if not, we'll just post the rest to patreon as uncuts

When it comes to the foreshadowing in One Piece and Oda's writing I'd like to just point out two clear points of interest when understanding his craft. First of all, after almost a decade in the making Oda revealed a sketch of the Straw Hat crew he made back in the 90's with what I'd call a 75% accuracy rate as some are prototypes of what would eventually be made. Personally don't think theres an example in the western world of a comic writer deciding to wait 10 years to introduce a character, and the Boldcast has already ran into multiple references to him. In an industry people just don't decide to tackle crafting projects like that, it's serious romanticism. It's just not common in literature that's to be released in consistent small chunks. And second theres a drawn line crossed in the story that many people don't even recognize as a step into a new world of topics. There are many deep arcs of knowledge passed through that don't even directly connect to the Straw Hats in One Piece, and those story threads are used to discuss Political, Moral, and Religious topics. Going to be very clear that not every flashback is the tragic history of a new crew member. Rather reviews of heartbreaking realities that can mature a viewer's understanding of the world. Before that line is crossed many of the lessons shown and questions asked are philosophical proclamations people have discussed for hundreds of years but after that line is crossed Oda begins to bring into conversation modern problems, debates, and ideals. And these modern ideas are valued enough the live action messes up is trying to focus on attributes of characters that are expressed much later on. Taking things into discussion that originally are more on the other end of a story thread 10 years in the making. Originally subtle points that are used to be brought back into discussion later on, as modern views of such topics have evolved over the years, refocused because of the importance of said topics in current times. Hell they left out a whole character partially to help avoid a tough moral review when they reappear later on.

Tomas

Sanji or Nami for both of them, I like either version of their characters for different reasons

With any kind of literary work, I don't think authors know ahead of time every single fragment of content and information they are planning for the story. I mean certainly there are elements that oda has set in stone, for example since he was a young adult in school, he knew what “one piece” was before the publication of the manga even started and has never changed his mind on what that ending is. Kishimoto knew that Sasuke and Naruto were eventually going to fight at the end of the story. However, speaking in terms of all of forshadowing everything, those kinds of expectation for written literature of any kind is impossible. I don’t think there exists a person on this planet who knows every single piece of information that goes into a body of work. I mean that’s not what writing is. Part of the princples behind story telling is being able to Where the talent comes into play as an academic professional writer and author is to be able to create a consistency of story threads by improvising the plot and changing things to fit that narrative without resulting in what you would refer to as dues ex machina or plot holes. This is the key fundamental aspects to solid story telling and sadly its lost on alot of authors in the industry, but Oda I think is one of those very talented individuals that researches all of his drafts, goes back and looks at his outlines for each story and chapter he creates in the past, in order to provide that cohesion of consistency for his manga. And by god when you get further in this beast of a story, its unbelievable how he connects the dots well seemingly not having it all mapped out. I will say though as the manga goes on or anime, their are different levels of interweaving plot threads i think that are much stronger, more connected then previous early aspects of the story so that will be exciting to see.

I'm one of the people who enjoy the comparisons, it's just fun to hear how you perceived the story in different mediums! It's notable that the issues you bring up at the beginning (Sanji's cooking contest, Luffy inconsistently aiming and getting stuck) is all filler content. I still agree with the overall take, One Piece definitely has its deliberately goofy and silly moments, and the switches between those and the serious ones tend to work really well. One of the saddest things about the OP anime, I think is that the animation doesn't match the story for a very, very long time. Especially during the fights. There are exceptions for episodes here and there, but overall the animation is depressingly mid. Or below. The story is strong enough to prop the anime up despite this, but it's such a shame. I think that the main difference is that compared to HxH, OP plays its themes straight? While HxH tends to subvert them. But generally I agree. Simple doesn't equal dumb. I believe the One Piece is real! We'll just going to have to wait and see though, I guess. But you're right, you'll laugh a lot along the way. The locations in East Blue (aside from Loguetown, and that's not amazing either) are pretty undeveloped, yeah. In the manga as well. They were my favourite part of the live action, no contest. Another main function don Krieg has, aside from being the contrast to Mihawk that you talk about, is to show off who Luffy is to Sanji, and why it would be worth following him. I think it's not so much that the arc doesn't work without him, but more that you wonder why Sanji goes with Luffy, specifically. Although it definitely goes on too long in the anime adaptation. Yeah, I'm with Lindsey on Arlong Park, lol. I found Nojiko's and Gen's behaviour in the live action unconvincing. And just added in for the sake of melodrama, it made the whole thing way overdone, in my opinion. Nami is working to freeing her village, which is suffering under Arlong's rule, and robbing pirates from the age of eight is suffering enough, I would think! Especially since it means having to enrich the actual person who murdered her mother at the end of it, and actually assist him in his plans up untill then. Carson is right about the earlier shōnen trends, but Luffy is also a Son Gokuu/Sun Wukong archetype (the Monkey King of Journey to the West, not Dragon Ball, though Dragon Ball's Son Goku is of course also of the same archetype). They tend to always be strong from the start, often monstrously so, and also a constant source of chaos and mischief, who gets into scrapes because they're curious/it would be funny. They tend to be forces of nature! That said, they do point out that the East Blue is the weakest sea. Fishmen live in the Grand Line, and Arlong was the only one who gave Luffy any sort of real trouble. You make a lot of really good points about the power levels, and what's had to be done in order to disadvantage characters. They're not often getting a fair fight, no. Usopp's biggest problem is his confidence, yeah. What really gets me with Luffy is how he gets all quiet and serious, and is suddenly and surprisingly dangerous. Like when he grips Arlongs sword, and suddenly Arlong is unable to move it a millimeter. And then he just crushes it. But I also love the bit when he recounts all the ways he relies on his crew, and when Arlong asks what *he* can do, he just says "I can beat you". Yep, that's the core of Luffy right there. He's the one who deals with the biggest threat, the enemies who no one else can take. But he still couldn't do it alone. Also, this was cut from the original anime (it's in the first chapter of the manga and in the anime extra that tells the same story), but they do explicitly state that Luffy has actively trained for ten years to become as strong as he is. Even if you're not watching One Pace, you might want to download their version of the first saga, because it starts with this episode and has cut the non-canon parts (there's otherwise some ununteresting filler in that, as I understand). But it's also basically retelling the part with Luffy and Shanks for most of it, so it's not much new material in it. I do think you may find it interesting, though, since it was animated so much later than the episodes you're currently watching and with a higher budget. A comparison could be fun. (This comment is way too long, I know, but I was just writing as I listened and now it's all here. Oh well. Read it if you feel like it.)

RIP Great Britain

Foxfire

Wait, so who was Carson’s favorite character in the anime and live action?

Ej Evangelista

100% agree with your take on Zoro. I agree that he came off a bit edgy in the live action and had a little less personality than the Zoro I'm used to watching, that was one of my few issues with the live action. And yes, Shanks is a very intriguing character but I’m also bias af lol

Z

loving the content so far! One piece is the best journey that yall could embark on! can’t wait to see yall reactions to the story way throughout the whole series

Chriz

The eye-catchers were so cute.

EOussama

RT TV used to do that.

Will.Har310

My favorite part about this series has been seeing y’all’s reactions to the differences in the anime compared to the live action. I’m surprised so many people find it annoying.

Will.Har310

My favorite thing about One Piece is that the entire concept behind Luffy's Devil Fruit is in the first place is just that Oda wanted to give his MC the most ridiculous power he could think ofーbecause he wanted to write something that was fun & goofy & not wholly serious. In fact, as you go through the anime, you'll start to see more enemies (and some allies, too) get *visibly* mad during fights that Luffy "isn't taking things seriously" by getting distracted, or using increasingly goofy-looking moves because they assume they're being mocked and/or looked down onーmeanwhile Luffy isn't actually doing it to get a rise out of them, he's genuinely just... silly. He's a silly guy. He's really special among anime protags in that regard, I think. Oda allows him the freedom to be "silly first, serious second" rather than the reverse.

Erica Wilder Boulter

I loved the eye catchers yall did! Never seen another channel do that

Christian

Off topic But did you drop 86 it's been a while 🤔
