It ruins the surprise, but if a story is good enough, you won't need to be surprised to be gripped by it. The bits with the crew in these episodes aren't canon, that's why Luffy doesn't seem to recognise Garp. Otherwise, this is canon! It's just told in one page images at the start of chapters. I have a link to a compilation (Don't worry about spoilers in the chapter titles, you've watched past all of those chapters by now. The last three are for the beginning of Little Garden). Hmm, I think that a lot of what happens to you in the Grand Line is down to luck, too. I mean, Krieg ran into Mihawk first thing, while Luffy and the gang ran into a bunch of bounty hunters much weaker than them. Also, the rumours in the East Blue might also be pretty exaggerated, because no one really knows what it's like. People probably hear a lot of rumours (and read the papers) about the most intense things going on, and imagine that it's all like that? The real danger is probably the difficulty with navigating, at the entrance level. Without Nami, they probably would have sunk before Whiskey Peak, been blown far enough course that food and water could have started to become an issue.

2023-12-20 19:54:39 +0000 UTCAlso, since this material was based on a cover story the anime had to expand on it a lot. The cover story was told in only 30 panels without any dialouge but I think the anime did a great job adapting it.

2023-12-20 18:48:54 +0000 UTCZoro and Luffy seeing Garp, Coby and Helmeppo in the newspaper is a anime only scene. So the anime staff probably just didn't know about Garp being Luffy's grandpa at that point.
