devastating, every time

Yeah this was the moment that made me fall in love with this series. I don't cry much when I watch stuff, but this hit me pretty hard.

One piece was supposed to end after alabasta.

Oda is a little more intentional in his writing than you are giving him credit for. Of course he doesn't have everything planned out and he is a great improvisor, he also is very good at keeping his characters actions to things they would actually do and don't generally make them do things out of character for them. Chopper was a character planned out from the early stages of Oda writing One Piece, there's old concept art of a different version of chopper where he smoked and had a sword, vastly different from what we got in the actual story. It's worth knowing that One Piece is a story that Oda has wanted to write for most of his life, he had the idea for this story long before he became a mangaka. He also has had the end of One Piece planned since the beginning. You are right on his inexperience at this point in the story, Oda was only 22 years old when the first chapter of One Piece was published. More than half of his life has been spent drawing and writing One Piece.

i wipe the tears but more keep coming 🤣 choppers backstory is something else 😭💔

I feel like our comments are a bit too overzealous lol, i mean this is good, but this is far from oda's peak. Though it is a recognizable difference in quality compared to previous writing in the series so it’s great to acknowledge that, but we should hold back a little bit, for when the real shit hits the fan

Such a great point to reach for Xmas! Seen this part so many times, and I still get teary-eyed. One of my favourite character backstories. Oda knows how to bring out those strong raw emotions and just gets better at it over time too. You guys are in for a treat, it's just getting started.

Jambron

Yes, the story is very much alive! The way he ties up plot points or even small things like a sentence or word will make you understand a little more as to why this story is held so dearly for millions of fans. It isn't an exaggeration at all to say that you guys have missed a TON of stuff already. Before this Chopper arc, Oda has already been intentional with his writing and has always been. Fear not, this is completely normal on a first read/watch. Oda is a fantastic gardener. He takes his time and sprinkles seeds when you least expect it. To this day, Chopper's story is one of my favorites and I'm happy you guys have enjoyed it as well. Merry Christmas!

Ever since Lindsay got sad over Momoo I have been waiting for these episodes. Animals seem to be a weak spot lol and these episodes are just BRUTAL. Oda is a goofy guy. He likes to have fun and be silly but when it's time to get serious he gets serious. One of the reasons One Piece is so popular and people hype it to the Heavens and back is that it really makes use of its length. It's not long for no reason, but it's hard to understand that in the first 200 or so episodes. He is a very good long term writer. These episodes were definitely a good taste of what Oda can do, but it's when tiny details end up meaning SO much 500 episodes later that you start questioning how this man does what he does. I am very keen for you guys to experience some of that because you have the right minds to appreciate it. Your attention to detail is great, and not a lot of reactors have that. Merry Christmas yo! Thanks so much for these reactions, I couldn't have asked for anything more!

Choppers backstory is just so sad, think it's a testament to oda's writing that he can introduce a character and make you care about them so much.

Pretty much. Oda is very good at creating open-ended plot details or world building, and then re-incorporating them in later story arcs without making it feel shoehorned in or like a retcon. He does plan ahead for certain details, but not as much as some rabid fans like to believe.

BirthdayParty

There is alot I want to say about this but I don't want to mention to much because you guys are still early in the series but I will say this for now. Academic writing is not about knowing everything ahead of time. I think sometimes people get confused about the craft of writing, insinuating that oda is just like the master of planning the story because he knows each and every little detail. NO that’s not it. What oda excels at is being able to create improvisations for the story that fit into the plot consistently well using the art of forshadowing and a degree of pre-planning due to researching his own materials before intregrating it into the story. This happens within the arc to provide a more natural flow and some even overarching that span years of published chapters and he's managed this for over 25 years, and I don’t think ANY shoenen author has been able to ever achieve that. This is also reffered to as a literary technique called Chekov's Gun where the author explicitly states something that they want the reader to be aware of for the future by responding with ambiguity or creating a vague notion in the literature that points to an event that is left open for further plot development. He also at times subverts readings expectations intentionally to create twists in the story that are unpredictable. All of this was much more clearly presented in the Drum Kingdom island arc. This will continue to be used in a much larger scale. “When does a man die? When he is hit by a bullet? No! When he suffers a disease? No! When he ate a soup made out of a poisonous mushroom? No! A man dies when he is forgotten!”. - Dr. Hiriluk (Inhereted Will)

Yes sir, this is Goda!! Just a taste of what is to come. I hope your ready. You still have along journey ahead. If you have not noticed also, the story is starting to gradually have a tonal shift. My personal assumption as I mentioned before is there was a time in oda's life of publishing the manga, when OP became much more popular. I would have to look that SBS up specifically to find out which arc he was in, when he made that statement, but at that point, I think oda started thinking and planning more carefully about the story to make it more engaging for the readers.

Merry Christmas!

NO SPOILERS-- I agree with you it's really well written but i think that things are more meaningful and conected than you think. maybe less jazzy.. I mean if an author construct his or her story with ideas that are finnally connected together in the whole story that means thers's more to that than exploring dark room along the way and finding the way.. for me so far Drum was very political. i think that even Wapol's devil fruit has a meaning. There is just one thing i dindt like and i think that Oda could done it better. they need a doctor and there is an island famous for its medecine... to easy.. but for the rest master piece... Good reaction, emotional moments. Chopper backstory made me cry.. From the begening song are so well chosen or written for the series. i didnt see that anywhere else.. so far it's really great and i hope we will watch it again together with wit studio remake :) :). that will be great too. with Gintama and Welcome to NHK. merrry chrismas too all

Since you asked, because "Tonakai" is reindeer in Japanese, he's named Tony Tony. Just another instance of wordplay that doesn't get translated outright. As for Oda's habits, I think he's for sure gifted at both planning and improvising, as you suspect, but I would add he's good at misdirection and setup. Not only is that useful for twists, but I think it helps when it turns out a random reindeer (for example) is important in the plot later without them being forced in, hopefully avoiding deus ex machina. I think Wapol is an interesting character. First, you're right he feels one-dimensional, because it's enough to work with. Second, he's Luffy's foil in many ways but not entirely. Luffy wants to be Pirate King. Wapol is a pirate-king. Maybe it's commentary on how your average kings and pirates share selfish traits, and you force together two who are both halves of the same coin: "I do what I want" but opposites in their priority.

Veritas

Chopper waving the flag and saying he will become the cure all medicine is one of the greatest moments for me. Choppers goal is near impossible yet his determination when saying it makes you believe it’s possible.

Doctor Hiriluk's speech remains one of the best speeches in anime. Hiriluk was the goat RIP king Btw you are probably going to get some flack for saying that this is legitimate good writing compared to previous arcs but I totally agree. People just don’t like to hear any complaints about their favorite thing. If one piece remained at the writing level that it started out as I don’t believe it would be the behemoth it is today. Also even though the writing in previous arcs wasn’t the best, what Oda has always excelled in is making endearing characters and a fun world. You can feel the sense of completeness this backstory has and how you don’t need more or less. Oda is cooking 🔥🔥🔥

Ty

"When does a man die", such an iconic speech in the series. What makes this extra sad really is the pure and genuine intention of Chopper is what ultimately led to an already inevitable demise to only materialize faster. It's always the innocent helping hand that twistedly ends up delivering the stab that gets to me. I agree with you, Carson, about the storytelling approach often used by Oda. It often appears as if he's improvising the narrative, akin to freestyling, while subtly introducing small elements that he later revisits, creating an impression of a meticulously planned and interconnected story. I'd like to mention another aspect: the portrayal of Chopper's and Dalton's backstories. These narratives, while individually significant, collectively serve as a broader exploration of Drum Kingdom's own backstory. Both characters face their unique challenges, yet their stories are integral to the kingdom's larger narrative about the evolving medical care crisis. This overarching story elegantly converges, linking Chopper and Dalton's individual journeys in a satisfying conclusion that reflects the country's development.

EOussama

also yes, while improvising and writing things into the story as it goes is one of his styles he also plans ahead. he opens plotlines and has thoughts about characters hundreds of chapters in advance.

Baronizer

the intentionality, depth and character building just become incredible. the world expands and the setups pay out immensely

Baronizer

this is how it starts. you will cry many more tears

Baronizer

Refused to let Wapol's trap, Chopper's mushroom, or the disease that has been plaguing him his whole life kill him, and instead chose to go out smiling and on his own accord like a fucking boss🐐

klairvoyance

Enlightenment is Carson & Lindsay talking about Jujutsu Kaisen.

Nicolas LeBlanc

Yesssirrr GoatPiece!!! Mind you this is only episode 86 the Journey has only just begun!! Merry Christmas everyone and a Happy new year!

Overwhelming Tactician

Happy Holidays everyone! Definetly one of my favorite storylines in the series, having that song play while Dr Hiluluk gives his speech emphasizes the idea of hope during such a somber situation. Fun Fact: Oda said that if a person was to eat the Human Human fruit it would grant them enlightenment, and a person eating 2 devil fruits would cause them to explode.

Tomas

Lindsay, Oda has a few more tricks up his sleeve for your water works. -Merry Christmas

Nicolas LeBlanc

Thank you so much! Your support is the best gift we could ask for Merry Christmas!

Briana Roop

I think one of the things Oda is good at is doing the unexpected and things that you wouldn’t think would happen in the story but doing it, and ending up fitting everything together and giving ppl twists. I can’t wait for you to see more bc one thing I love about One Piece is how he is able to fit everything together in such a deep and entertaining way.

Kiki Varas

Merry Christmas! This is why you guys are the only people I patronize!
