As an addendum: it has come to my attention that the game Dungeon Meshi bears the most similarity to is Wizardry, an RP Video Game from the 80s that is rather popular in Japan. Like, Wizardry is itself obviously based on D&D and the author is also a fan of D&D herself, but there are a lot of very specific Wizardry references in the series.

2024-01-08 12:17:59 +0000 UTCMy understand is that D&D is not particularly popular in Japan, but it has its influences. Like, all pop fantasy is derived from it some way or another, as both Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest (as well as other older JRPGs) were directly influenced by it. More important, though, the author of the manga is a big D&D nerd and Baldur's Gate in particular. There is fan art from her out there of all BG1 and 2 companion NPCs and she has hundreds of hours in BG3. The odd translation 'Delicious in Dungeon' was chosen by her, most likely so you can abreviate as DnD. So all similarities are very much on purpose.
