Fruits Basket Season 2 Ep 19 UNCUT REACTION!

Comments

It's always great to see another zodiac crack under the pressure of Tohru's overwhelming wholesomeness, but I still think this instance is probably the most poignant for me. I also absolutely love every scene where someone tells Tohru to mind her own business and she says she's gonna meddle anyway.

I remember back in the day when this episode aired and people reacted to it, basically everyone was very creeped out at the end scene because of just how unnerving it is to see Tohru display such… Darkness? Just quiet, silent, contemplation that somewhat emmited chaos. It’s kinda sad, especially after watching the series over. This episode in general is probably one of the first attempts to show the viewers that something in Tohru is wrong. We’ve seen her be sad, coping and grieving by herself (the mini Hiro “why are you obsessed with your mom etc” situation in the beach house arc), but this unsettling scene with her is something so unexplainably abnormal, only in the fact that we know that this definitely isn’t what we consider normal for her character.

I always liked this episode due to the parallel made between Rin and Tohru, both very lonely people who are unable to face their demons properly and put on a mask in a way to endure and to be strong. They do this in a very different way, Tohru through the kindness and embracing people all around her and Rin rejecting people and being sowhat aggressive in hopes that acting this way, she will be able to keep them at distance and protect them from a far. It is also really nice how they also were able to connect Rin to Yuki, as them both eager for the similar sentiments. The conversation between Rin and Tohru at the hospital is interesting. It seems as them just debating the same things related to the curse but it actually adds to the feeling of it. Till this point, we have been presented to the curse as something complex that forces the zodiac members and God to be connected and to be in this eternal circle but now, it is shown how the feeling of it is. The bond, the promise, the agreement all started as the spirits wanted to be connected in this "eternal banquet" but nowadays, they don't remember that promise but the bond that bind them remains, so the purpose is lost. Excited for the next ones! Good reaction as always :)

For me this episode gave a bit more nuance to the whole curse thing and also a bit more nuance into Tohru's character as well. I think this show does it so well, like just when you think Tohru is relented to just being a support in zodiac members' life, it shows us that hey this is a character on its own, and her niceness stems from a lot of complex emotional turmoil. I always read the last scene as her trying to reach out and then once again closing deciding to tackle her problems on her own, like she has always had to do- a nice little bow on the whole monologue earlier in the episode where rin finally confesses that she cant do it alone afterall. also on a meta level, love your reactions as always! cant wait for future episodes!!
