I think getting the weapon like that was a bit abrupt. Like you said, I'd have liked it to have been a combined effort between her and Usopp. I don't see anything wrong with the way she uses the weapon itself. It is her knowledge that makes it work aside from the final tornado tempo with the bird thing, which is a bit bs. But everything with the cool, heat and electric ball, is great imo. The fight itself would've been fine with better pacing and cutting out most of the gags.

2024-02-17 19:13:37 +0000 UTCThanks for the episode! (I'm watching them a few days later) Something I noticed when I rewatched it with you (i heard the whole discussion but I don't remember whether you've mentioned it), but Nami stabbing her foot to block Miss DoubleFinger then making her spin with her tornado attack reminded me of Naruto blocking Kabuto's kunai with his own hand before using his first "completed" Rasengan on him, making Kabuto spin as well.

2024-01-30 18:53:55 +0000 UTCNami's combat scenes will never be fixed, I'm sorry. They are each equally as annoying than the last. Her group fights are better though, cuz then it's not just running around and memes

2024-01-30 08:40:02 +0000 UTCShe learning about the Tact before the fight would've been better too

2024-01-30 00:28:11 +0000 UTCCrocodile seems pretty sure that pluton IS in the country, what seems to bê uncertain is if Cobra itself knows where it is.

2024-01-28 16:45:01 +0000 UTCThat fight is pretty bad, no two ways about it. I can apreciate the character develpment, but the fight itself doesn't work very well.

2024-01-28 16:41:15 +0000 UTCI like how Nami had to learn it on the fly but yeah they could have done it faster or in a better way. Also power in OP is not always based on a number or higher bounty etc. The power system in OP is unique as you'll get further into the series and learn more about it. Its nothing crazy like Nen but I really appreciate how it evolves as the series goes on especially with devil fruits.

2024-01-28 06:49:00 +0000 UTCI assume Ms. Double Finger's wasn't necessarily incompetent but more that she was toying with Nami the entire time and not taking her seriously. But I agree that I wish they better incorporated Nami's knowledge and skills into the conclusion of the fight. I thiiiink Oda's intention was that the clouds and mirages were not moves created by Usopp but discovered by Nami because of her knowledge of the weather, but I don't think it was portrayed clearly enough. Love Nami and Usopp's relationship though. They're my fav Strawhat duo.

2024-01-28 01:19:01 +0000 UTC100% agree with the possibility of Nami introducing the idea of the Clima-Tact to Usopp due to her own knowledge of weather/science instead of him coming up with it (by accident) That would have been a nice boost for Nami's character and her relationship with Usopp.

2024-01-27 22:13:34 +0000 UTCyep, with some exceptions tho. Mostly the emotion behind the fight is what makes them somewhat good.

2024-01-27 19:07:19 +0000 UTCOda's fights are often like, "What's the most ridiculous thing this character could do right now?" That's totally why he chose Luffy's rubber power - it's all about the laughs. A lot of these battles are just tongue-in-cheek or completely wacky. I don't think Oda takes them too seriously. About Nami, yeah, she does seem underpowered with that "toy" weapon Usopp whips up for her. I think your reaction to it makes sense. You're spot on - the last attack feels more like something Usopp would do than Nami. Most of the stuff she uses is just her trying to make do with what she's got. And the whole time, she's just relying on Usopp to come up with something. While her sentiment in wanting to not be useless is genuine, she was dismissive about what he was going to do about the weapon itself and even walked out when he started talking money. A proper Nami glow-up wouldn't quite feel earned. And let's talk Usopp! The guy's in three fights, even if he pretty much gets clobbered instantly by Mr. 2. It's more of a moment for Usopp to shine than Nami, showing off his tinkering skills and how he can pitch in. Big props to Usopp here! I think Oda's trying to show that Nami isn't a natural fighter. Take the boat away and suddenly she's the most unprepared straw-hat - didn't read the manual, didn't give Usopp a clear brief, didn't even test the weapon. And that's not just because Usopp didn't have much time to make it on the way to Alabasta. Nami's not meant to look like a badass here; she's way out of her league. She only wins because Doublefinger doesn't take her seriously, just standing there watching Nami fumble around and saying "wait a minute, wait a minute". Nami scrapes through by the skin of her teeth and definitely needs to level up her game for fast-paced battles. The one positive Nami aspect here is showing she had to use her brain to get away from it, and didn't need Zoro to save her. Maybe there's hope for her yet. Just keep watching and see what happens! I personally enjoy that some of the fights in the series aren't straightforward victories for the characters and that they don't always come across as grand, triumphant battles. Of course, there are plenty of those, typically with Zoro and the strong gang, where the fights are full of style and coolness.

2024-01-27 15:11:48 +0000 UTCThe power wasn’t entirely just given to her, because only she’s able to use it the way she does. Ussop doesn’t even know the potential of the weapon, he didn’t think about using the weather balls to create these different weather conditions. Usopp only purposely created the gag attacks, which is why the tornado wasn’t a real tornado.

2024-01-27 12:53:02 +0000 UTCI agree about Nami, but again One Piece is long and it'll change your opinions many times, but also this fight could've been much shorter and not stretched to 2,5 episodes, many problems would've been fixed, Doublefinger wouldn't look so incompetent as Nami was running for 2,5 episodes, Nami's injuries would feel more significant in a shorter period, and we wouldn't question a lot of things. You'll encounter this problem, and this is all about anime, in 99% of cases manga doesn't have this problem, but Toei just stretches things a lot and things don't have the same impact as it does in the manga and that's one of the downsides of a long-running shows. In Naruto, they fixed it with 500 filler episodes, in One Piece they fixed it by stretching 5-second scenes into 3 minutes.

2024-01-27 12:21:36 +0000 UTCits okay to not like every episode. especially some of the early fights are just meh. about the power ups. it might feel unearned rn but you have to keep in mind that nami and ussop are normal people in a world of monsters. they dont have to prove their strenght when it comes to the other crewmates and no one really expects it from them. just as luffy talked about in arlong park, there is a lot of things he cant do with his crew, and the same goes for nami.

2024-01-27 11:48:04 +0000 UTCI really like the fight and Namis Power Up. Usopp basically fucked up and just because of Namis skills the gimmick became a weapon. But I understand your critizism about the fight.

2024-01-27 11:34:18 +0000 UTCYeah, I feel like Miss Doublefinger is just that incompetent.

2024-01-27 11:25:27 +0000 UTCYeah your right lol, this may trigger some fans but don't worry about it guys, you’re taking it at face value right now. You may have an entirely different perspective or point of view when you come back to these moments after being 400 or 500 episodes into the story. OP is one of those series that benefits you significantly by re-watching or re-reading the arcs again after gaining further knowledge of the world and its lore.

2024-01-27 10:48:42 +0000 UTCNot the fighting mechanics itself but rather, the way oda incorporates mechanical upgrades to add to the power scheme of the characters. The idea for nami fits thematically with her knowledge and experiences of weather and also provides her a weapon that she could use in the future through the use of scientific inventions developed by Usopp. A very grounded concept but also a growth of her character that is more sensible and convincing as opposed to just some illogical ass pull like many other shonens. You have to admire oda for his more inventive idea’s and that truly is what most fans love about this single moment in the series. This especially when compared to naruto where many characters live in the shadow of the main leads due to naruto and sasuke becoming literal gods or in Dragonball's case where saiyans are the dominant force and everyone else just is delogated to minor supporting roles. This is only the start, but one piece never falls into this trap. You’ll just have to continue to watch over nami and see how she develops over the course of the story.
Artemis
2024-01-27 10:42:45 +0000 UTCyeah the storm attack was an exception & the rest of em were party tricks combined together using her "science" knowledge into actual weather-related attacks their point of inconsistent power scaling & needing to suspend a substantial amount of disbelief still stands tho, and you usually learn to tolerate at some point (or don't)...for the sake of telling the grander story🤷🏿♂️

2024-01-27 10:28:40 +0000 UTCTook the words right out my mouth^^ It is quite ironic for the one piece of fiction, that is considered to be the greatest battle shonen manga, to have fights as its greatest weakness lol

2024-01-27 10:20:54 +0000 UTCusopp whouldnt know how to make a cloud and thunder and mirages he didnt write those in the instructions he just had the cool , heat and electricity balls he wouldnt be able to use it because he doesnt have the knowledge nami has

2024-01-27 10:04:37 +0000 UTCOne piece fights are the worst part of the show imo. The fights are really inconsistent as a whole. Don't get me wrong, the build up and everything else are nutworthy. But the actual fights

2024-01-27 09:22:29 +0000 UTCI agree with your points about Nami's fight. So I actually believe that Oda really downplayed her character, even if this was something that he wanted to use, like turning Nami into magical girl, it was done bad in this moment.

2024-01-27 09:03:14 +0000 UTCThe translation mangles it a bit. Crocodile does not say Pluton is a god, but is named after a god. Pluto the god of the underworld in this case.
