Fruits Basket Season 2 Ep 25 UNCUT REACTION!

Comments

Love your reactions! Can’t wait for you guys to watch season 3!

And here is Fruits Baskets’ worst kept secret! I was so glad you two went into it 100% blind, because about half the people who went in watching it back when it was airing basically were already spoiled either before getting into it, or somewhere along the way in a random comment under their videos xP There’s a lot of theories about why the curse started breaking out of the blue (since it’s never actually revealed explicitly), but one of the biggest is that the curse was already weak to begin with (the dragon being a seahorse, etc) and it just kinda happened untimely (along with maybe more environmental factors that could have aligned with it). Kureno’s curse reveal also changes some things as I remember reading back in the day that the curse felt almost omnipotent—a force that an outsider can’t even think of touching. I honestly didn’t think Tohru would been able to break it because of just how out of hand it kinda is, and what was likely the intent by emphasizing Akito’s personal hold on the crew. But Kureno’s curse breaking sets in that it actually is possible to break, but more so that the curse that was so omnipotent to the readers had already begun to break LONG before the story even began. One of the biggest themes of Fruits Basket revolves around feminity, and Akito constantly presenting as masculine (even refers to herself as ‘boku’ constantly, as well as vague implications of her worsening health to stunt growth) is (makes it more evident next season) a self rejection of her own personal view of femininity and the lengths she goes to reject it completely—be it in herself, or within other women. It also strengthens the Tohru-Akito foils involving femininity and general relationships (that definitely builds up more as the story goes on, post reveal as well), as you two are already well aware of. There’s definitely a lot of recontextualization that goes on with the reveal though—especially involving those who knew of her identity.

Thank you for always leaving such detailed comments and still never spoiling anything Your comments are always nice to read

I don't think show needed this many relationships 😭 like cmon @ author I love the story but some of this is just unnecessary. Also Sailor Moon and Revolutionary Girl Utena were from the 90s and they had queer characters and tackled some serious topics. So you would think fruba would get some inspiration from these iconic series like most shows did back then. Sadge

The 80 's and even more the 90's have a huge feminismt empoverment and in a less case a homosexual . The shojo scene was a it peak of popularity the first nekestu saint seya was heavly influence by candy candy and rose of verséail estetical in the manga and for his narative : a comming of age story the 2 big shojo gender isekai and magical girl start to realy become popular outside of the shojo real later the shojo scene start to decline because shonen start to have more and more femal character and so become more and more popular with femal audience andwith inu yasha and zero no tsukaima isekai become more associate with shonen

you where lucky to not be spoil , when i read the story in 1999 the french translator spoil akito is a girl in volume one or two by using hte equivalent of she for akito every time

azope

And btw in her interactions with others she is still herself, she is confident and mocking, but when it comes to relationships she becomes an emotional mess. When she first met Tohru she was also conflicted bc of the feelings she got from that interaction, and was behaving like a hysterical child. So her being like this about Kureno is consistent with her character

Reina

love this interpretation of Uo and i also found it so good while watching for the first time that how her character's stereotype was broken and she was given much more depth by giving her a chance to have a crush on a boy

One thing I appreciate about Akito being a girl is the topic of femininity and what forms it can take. It’s not just a misogynistic take like “oh so she’s a girl and she was jealous all the time simply because women are jealous in their nature!!!” Actually female x female platonic relationships a lot of the times are very complicated. We can see jealousy and deep love in Hana, when she thinks about Tohru, and imo it’s not there to give an opportunity to see her as a romantic partner. It’s more about exploring fem friendships, which often times even in real life can be possesive and loving at the same time. I don’t want to say much, but Akito hating women is deeply rooted in herself denying her womanhood. I like when shows explore femininity, bc the media today likes to portray women only in a positive (often masculine) light. The irony is that this strong 💪🏽 woman without flaws is seen as a perfect feminist which is bs because it discredits the psychological hardships a lot of women have. Also I think that Uo falling for a guy and behaving like a typical girl with him is not out of character. It actually adds more dimension to her, bc her tomboyish attitude was not just her personality but a coping mechanism. She was in a gang trying to suppress her emotions when all she wanted was being loved. Then she meets Tohru (a traditionally feminine character) who teaches her what love is. And here we see her openly showing feelings to Kureno. It’s her being honest about her desire for love, not being out of character. Yuki through the whole series is seen in a feminine light, in the first season he was ashamed to be called girly, but the reason he was seen that way was because he is VERY sensitive and fragile. Now Yuki embraces that side of him, basically accepting the female in him. He realises that in the end love was the only thing he needed and that’s ok. That’s what makes him free and able to move on with his life.

I've heard people suggest that Akito was going to be a guy and end up with Tohru, but I've never seen any evidence for this? I remember she joked once about what if Akito actually was a guy, but I haven't heard anything about it actually ever being in the planning.

I am SOOO glad you were not spoiled for this reveal. A lot of people unfortunately got spoiled specially those who watched the dub version. It is a really two major revelations back to back. The Kureno revelation is big because it shows that the curse breaking is not impossible and now, Tohru knows. Shigure suspected because he felt Kureno was different at some level but he was not sure. He is really great at sensing and grasping the scent of people's emotions and feelings and he uses this to his benefit (whatever that is). Shigure, Hatori and Ayame are 27, Kureno 26, Ritsu is around 23-24 and Akito is around 21-22 (they don't say exactly). I love the discussion for this episode and your doubts and questions about what is the purpose of this reveal at this point of the story and the repercussions of that to the main plot. Some of the points you mentioned will be more clear in the future and I really excited to watch your journey now so close to the end. :D

Thank you for telling us! I figured that it was planned for most of the series, but it still seems to me that it wasn't the INITIAL idea for the story. Like once the author got to planning, I figured this was the plan, but it smelled to me like in the brainstorming stage, things might have been more straightforward, which is likely from a writers perspective that things will evolve and grow Really crazy reveal!

I actually have an answer for when Akito "became" a girl! In VERY early planning for the manga, Akito was going to be a guy and Tohru was going to end up with him romantically. However, by the time the first chapter was written, Akito was already a woman. Most of the story was planned from the beginning, idk what all specifically was changed if anything throughout the manga. One other thing that I do know was planned from the beginning was Yuki's feelings for Tohru being not romantic but seeing her as a mother. Anyways great discussion this week!! Excited to see more as you get to season 3.

Also, in the term of queer history in anime, you'd be surprised on how much content there was that had queer themes in them. I think of older series like Sailor Moon, Stop Hibari-kun, and Rose of Versailles. Even Ranma 1/2, a classic shōnen, can be read in a queer lense.

crying, screaming throwing up, this episode always have such a gut punch emotional impact. Also calling out the misogyny early on finally paying off!

I’m pretty sure the author had almost the entirety of the story planned out by the time she started writing it down
