2024-02-10 03:45:24 +0000 UTCOn Pell: It's been bandied about, whether it's true or not I dunno, that Pell was indeed supposed to kick the bucket here but the editors stayed Oda's hand because having a flying character die in a massive explosion (near a tower....in a desert setting with a lot of middle-eastern motifs) so close to 9/11 was perhaps not so advisable. The timing matches up with the chapter release at any rate.

2024-02-09 03:20:19 +0000 UTCI think the abruptness of Robin joining is what makes it so good. It would become repetitive and predictable if every character that joined required a heap of build up. Flipping it on it's head and having Robin join instead of Vivi was just really cool

2024-02-09 02:45:22 +0000 UTCI'm not sure how other feel about it, but I would strongly suggest checking out next episode (episode 131), it's technically a filler episode, but it's first episode of Robin as a crew member and introduction to very prominent in the future dynamic between her and one of the Straw Hats.

Robin is probably one of the characters that was projected the most in my opinion with such subtlety in a lot of her actions and the way she was presented. When I first watched/read this I felt like oda had a plan in mind for her but was intentionally using restraint as to not reveal everything where as other previous straw hats that joined, we kind of got there whole story with their dream/goal they want to achieve and that was it. Robin is an open book of mystery and intrigue. It’s the first time you really feel that her story extends deeper. So, from a writing perspective it feels a bit more multi-layered. In no point did I suspect that her wanting to join, was just oda using a quick substitute for vivi with no real goal in mind other then to make a last min change, the same way Vivi was turned into a princess.

The story he manages to attach to characters is something Hollywood could learn a lot from.. Maybe later watch his SBS where he answers fan's questions, in a far future when ur caught up, there he explains his thought process.
