And the incompetent bandit mask worn by the schools girls is called a hokkamuri. It's an actual thing, you can look it up and there's a bit of funny info.

Akito and Shigure are really interesting characters and I really like how the author make their relationship really messy and toxic. Can’t say I like Shigure very much tho. He irks me and this is a couple that if I knew them would advice to break up and seek therapy XD

I hate toxic couples irl but in fiction if done right they are just so entertaining. This episode is top tier for me because of the dialogue and the spicyness

Man, I hadn't watched this show since it aired, I completely forgot about Shigure's Revenge hook up with Ren, absolutely wild.

Akito didn't sleep with Kureno when his curse first broke. That happened at a later time, and she probably had already been together with Shigure at that point and learned that sleeping with someone can make them stay (really not the right takeaway). There was probably a moment where Kureno made her feel insecure and she resorted to that tactic and things started from there. Then Shigure slept with Ren and got kicked out. You can see in a flashback this eps it was when Akito was older. Unlike the other comments, I don't think it was just a few months before S1, it probably was more like a few years before. It was only after Shigure's "betrayal" that Akito's psyche got much worse, that would include losing it at Hatori. That didn't all happen in a short time. Don't get too hung up on the "adult" age. Adulthood in Japan is actually 20 today, and 15 in the old days. Akito probably had these relationships when she was 16 or older.
Ren also still has some power in the Sohma family but yes the hidden gender is very much Akito's choice now, she just needs to have the will to break from tradition. I personally think she just doesn't want to be a woman because she associates that image with Ren.
PS. Oh Shigure probably slept around in his younger days, or at least gave that impression. There was a comment in one of the Ayame episodes that back in HS they were already tired of the brothel scene.
PPS. I really enjoyed the post eps discussion, many great points

i honestly really like the dynamic between Shigure and Akito and i think it makes sense they’re gonna be together. the relationship is toxic but i still really like it and it helps the story stay interesting.

I always like to try and think about how their zodiac animal plays into their relationship dynamics. I can see how, with Shigure being the dog and all, his feelings towards Akitou might've developed differently than all the others, because dogs are normally seen as extremely loyal creatures. But then that makes me wonder how much of this is due to the curse vs what's in his inherent nature. Also I've been reading shoujo manga since I was a young teen so, while I do see the creepiness of all of these age gaps, I've grown so numb to it. Shigure and Kureno and Ren too, they all need to be put on some kind of list.
I also like the toxic dynamic between Shigure and Akitou. How, while she does technically have more power over him, she never gets the chance to use it because he's always taking charge of the convo before she can even think of manipulating him. And his seeming resentment of her "I can do whatever I want because I'm God" mentality really shows when he says how he sometimes just wants to crush her to a pulp, despite how much he really love her.

y'all got the impression that Shigure slept with Ren when Akito was 12 but that's not the case. her'es the complete timeline to clear it up. A few months before episode 1 of season 1, Akito starts sleeping with Kureno. Then Shigure slept with Ren to "get back" at Akito, and he was then kicked out of the main estate to live outside. he took Yuki with him to go live in the house. After that Tohru finds the house, starts living with them, and the series starts. hope this clears it up!

Akito is never given a canon age but she's probably 20-22, i would guess 21 at this point in the story. also the series spans a long time so at the beginning of the series Shigure is 26, at this point he's 27. Kureno is 26, Tohru and the gang are all 17. Also Kureno isn't Shigure's younger brother, he just calls hin niisan cuz he's an older male figure that Kureno looked up to when he was younger. I do think Kureno and Akito's sexual relationship is weird, but we know by the timeline that it started a few months before the first episode of season 1, making akito 19 or 20. I do think this is SUPER weird still but at least it didnt start when she was younger i guess (i know it's a low bar)

Been waiting for this episode. The relationship between Shigure and Akito is really uncomfortable for all of the reasons you mentioned during the episode. I always got the impression that Shigure was really just putting on the act of being a lady's man to get Akito jealous, and I also think that this doesn’t seem like the first time Shigure and Akito had sex. It reads to me that when Shigure said we keep having this conversation over and over, and that Akito always uses her femininity against him, that they’ve had sex several times before in the past. One more thing it's really here with this subplot where Fruits Basket really starts leaning into being a melodrama.
