The fact that log poses are three-dimensional spheres from their introduction implies Oda was thinking outside the box from the start when it came to navigation, as that shape is necessary to point up or down. It would have been so easy to just make them look like regular compasses limited to a single plane, if there wasn't intent to leave the surface.
