Oda's pool of source material is actually unbelievable. Not only does he pull from modern pop culture basing characters on current actors and musicians but he also pulls from super obscure mythology Like...
*massive spoilers for anyone who hasn't finished Wano*
Joy boy is based on a west african myth that was passed around on dutch slave ships. “Joy Boy” is a character who is basically a folk god of dance and joy “Joyboy smiles perpetually at all the foibles and problems of mankind and cures human troubles by tapping out an irresistible rhythm on his drum.” I am currently in college double majoring in anthropology and creative writing. I am a lifelong fan of folk stories and mythology and I actively search out stories like this and I had never heard of this character. I was only exposed to it through a 1985 British encyclopedia on world myths and legends that I picked up because I just batch buy books like this to get inspiration for my own writing. There are no digital copies of this book, only hardcover and paperback; they are also all old as hell from pre 1990. I have absolutely NO IDEA how oda came across this myth. I have looked for other sources the only things i find are from this book or from the oral tradition passed down by west Africans who now reside in the Caribbeans.

They didn't just "lose" their land like a pair of car keys. They were driven out and it was stolen from them. Its not finders keepers. You wouldn't feel very great if some guy just walked into your house and claimed it.

That is so messed up. While yes just giving land back after such a long time is not feasible. However, a group of people should not completely lose claims of a land stolen from them either. That is not right or fair and just rewards thievery. Here in the US this is a highly relevant topic.

I think Oda pulls from a lot of stuff when he's trying to do this sort of thing. So there's likely a mix of references or inspiration using the Ainu (in Japan) and also natives from various places (which would probably include the Americas, Australia, etc). He refers to a lot of different things whether it is cultures, myths and legends, philosophical currents, history and geopolitics, etc.
It's what makes One Piece so relevant and rich! Oda often finds ways to bring in certain topics but sometimes I think he has to do it in a subversive way, for instance referring to the imagery of cultures that share similar stories or plights but are less close to home yet familiar enough that people will understand the symbolism.
I was listening to a podcast recently that explained how Princess Mononoke created controversy in Japan for references to the Ainu because it's one of the subjects that are still relatively taboo in Japan (marginalization, prejudice, etc).

Presumably with easier access to food and such, the Sky People also greatly increased in population over the 400 years.

I dont think it is as easy as just giving vearth up, Gan Fal said in another episode that nothing can grow in the sky, that is why they need vearth for planting. They used to just rely on happenstance when vearth would fall up with the knock-up stream. If the Sky People gave it up completely that would mean giving up their only sustainable source of food which is why it simply isnt possible for him to do. Thats why he tried to make a deal so they could coexist

"South is the warm-ish direction" I love this callback of the flashback we got in Orange Town where Shanks ad Buggy were arguing over which is colder, the south pole or the north pole.
"I like Pumpkin juice", I think this was just Oda mocking the philosophy and motivations behind colonialism.

I agree, that is why I enjoy the manga way more. I wonder if it is better in one pace. But I don't remember the pacing being fixed until 4 arcs later I think?

This is one of my favorite arcs. Also, this seems so relevant to current events.
