Something that’s so impressive to me about the writing here is that it’s not just making you sad; writing stories to make people sad is easy. This part of one piece makes you DISTRESSED it’s disturbing and uncomfortable to see the crew fighting this way. It feels wrong like it shouldn’t be happening but at the same time it makes complete sense and looking back on it this conflict was sort of inevitable. Every character has had moments but every character except for ussop has become more capable. Luffy Nami Zoro chopper and Sanji all have gotten stronger or displayed an improvement at what they are good at which allowed them to overcome new challenges. Ussop has not had that; HIS big moments come from him being brave and stepping up where he usually gets the job done even if it’s messy. Here he goes to do that again be brave and stand up for himself except this time he loses outright. This time the problem wasn’t being afraid of being weak; the problem was just being weak. And that breaks him. Pile that on to the stuff with the merry and robin and you get this.

i really love that you guys noticed that luffy was trying to take off the burden off usopp about what happened to merry by saying he decided to get a new ship framing it a captain decision instead but it backfired on him. a lot of people don't notice that when watching or discussing this episode. and think he was just being clueless to usopp's feelings saying he wanted a new ship before explaining how merry can't be fixed.

Before this episode I feeled like all this Franky situation was just like a filler, but in the end there how it went.

Jack Shadow

Also another thing is Ussop doesnt respect Luffy as a capitan. They are family First and Crew last. This was shown fight against aokiji after Zoro and Sanji came back alone becouse Luffy said so and Ussop couldnt understand it

Them meeting Aokiji probably also brought out the insecurities Usopp had been feeling for a while in the crew. The transition from the wacky Davy Back Fight, to meeting Aokiji, to this moment is such good storytelling and order of putting the audience into a looming dark cloud over the crew. It used to be that the Strawhats are able to breeze by opponents, the pressure of the accumulating challenges is catching up to them.

Yes, yes, and so much yes! One of my all time favorite episodes, no action, not lore, just a heated conversation between some really close friends, everything goes south because of circumstance. The best thing about this tho is the setting, normally One Piece fans will boast about all the cool and mystic environment the crew finds themselves in, but this entire episode took place inside one tiny room, on a tiny ship. The shouting never reached anyone outside but it was still loud enough to shatter some friendship bonds. This was such a great way to write an argument between friends, transitioning from Usopp's initial hurt about the stolen money to a deeper conflict. The Going Merry represents more than just a ship; it's a symbol of home and a cherished memento from Kaya, his childhood friend. Throughout their journey, its value grew beyond the material, becoming a testament to their bond. However, the argument takes a turn as Usopp's insecurities rise to the surface, pushing the disagreement to a new level.

yeah back in Arlong Park he drew all the compartments of the Going Merry in one of the Volumes (instead of the usual SBS) ---> https://imgur.com/a/3qkE3mI my fav takeaway: "Toilet (also a sink)"

klairvoyage

Why do they translate it as the "Gang" lol it clearly says mugiwara in japanese, meaning straw hats. Why don't they just translate the actual name? This is like some 4kids level translation.

Just a thought: I am pretty sure Oda drew some blueprints of the Merry on one of the chapter extras. Maybe somebody has a non-spoiler link to a picture that they'll be able to show you guys since you mentioned you never really understood the ship layout. If I find one, I'll try to post it.

Jambron

Carson what were you saying about "Development"? 😋

Artemis

Great discussion! I agree with everything in general, but I would argue a tiny bit over a couple of things: Usopp and the Merry: He does have a specific bond with the ship; don't forget that it ties to his village and to him directly as it was a gift from his childhood friend Kaya, so it's even harder for him than the others to accept that the ship is done for. Zoro: I do think you're right about him being a little stoic because of a warrior's code, but he is also acting as the second. He takes it very seriously, and he has to let his captain handle the situation and support his stance, whereas Sanji is more into handling the emotional drama and hurt of the crew at this point. Luffy character development: I wouldn't say Luffy has no character development (if that's something that people are saying). His personality stays consistent mostly, but I do find he matures over the series, so I also agree about your analysis of him evolving in his role as a captain too. I just think some of his development generally takes a bit of time to show. He does mature in many ways, I think, and evolves in how he acts. One of the best ways I've seen him described was "smart dumbass" (I think that was in the Mompiece content). Looking forward to your analysis of the rest of the episodes in the arc. Going to go watch the next one :)

Jambron

It's not really apparent here, but in the manga Nami was standing behind Luffy when Sanji kicked him... Sanji almost accidentally hurt Nami (!) because he was THAT desperate to stop Luffy from what he was about to say And God do I love seeing Zoro's unwavering loyalty to Luffy above all (even before the crew) on display

klairvoyage

gosh the voice acting in these eps are so good

xtina

Im not even watching the episode but I'm already crying from hearing their voices from this vid 😭
