There's no way anyone getting this far in the show doesn't absolutely love this whole saga. Seems to me they are already enjoying it quite a bit and we all know episodes and the whole story will just keep getting better and better <3

I think you bring up an interesting point about the nature of 'chessboard intellect' in shounen. Given the situation in One Piece, it's understandable that characters like Paulie are hotheaded & the citizens are easily fooled & quick to judge. This kind of simplistic reaction fits with Paulie's character when we first meet him & aligns with the general mob mentality often depicted within the anime. It's a reasonable portrayal considering the chaotic & unpredictable world they live in. However, it would be nice to see how this aspect might change as the story progresses. More nuanced reactions among the characters & citizens could add depth to the narrative, reflecting the growth &evolution Oda is known for. And regarding shounen writing, I believe that there's a spectrum. While series like Death Note explicitly focus on intellectual battles & strategic thinking, One Piece often conveys its complexity more subtly. It might not always be about characters thinking ten steps ahead, but rather how seemingly simple actions & decisions grow into significant developments over time. One Piece often leaves a lot unsaid, relying on the gradual revelation of details to build its narrative. This can sometimes make the characters' impulsive & seemingly idiotic actions feel jarring, but it also emphasizes the idea that there's more beneath the surface. The challenge isn't necessarily about having 'chessboard intellect' but about recognizing the layers of storytelling that become clearer as the series unfolds. That said, I'd prefer to avoid using future episodes as a frame of reference to keep the discussion focused on the current context & avoid any spoilers.

Thats pretty par for the course though when it comes to shonen. It is a magazine aimed at younger boys. Normally you don't see characters that have chestboard intelect and can think ahead 10 moves like in death note. Altough ODA's writing improves and character actions start to become less premature the further you get into the story. You can take for example characters in a arc from the 700's and compare it to this arc and its pretty night and day difference. But I think this is an intentional thing with oda as well. As the audience grew up, so to did his story start to mature more.

This is probably some sort of record that Luffy has not smiled consecutively for the longest time now. All the trouble the Straw Hats went through and Robin right probably having some nice, creamy latte, probably solving some Sudoku puzzle on the side.

Idk about y’all but I love Franky, managed to give Luffy a run for his money & is clearly powerful in his own right. He brings a lot of chaotic energy and even has his own theme song. Since stealing from pirates isn’t a crime and citizens could care less, the situation is understandable & is fair game if you were under the assumption that the Strawhats were the generic scum pirates. Since Franky seems to be the type of guy to care about his underlings, and is willing to get revenge for them, he seems like an empathetic guy who just happened to misunderstand Luffy, Usopp & the crew just like everyone else in the town. I expected a little more critical thinking from Paulie since he kind of led the charge of the Galley La Co. but he’s also a hothead. Likewise, the citizens in this world don’t seem to have the ability to think logically & jumps to conclusions quick which in the end is quite frustrating. Overall, can’t wait to see your future reactions. This arc has started off strong & I hope you guys are enjoying it as well.

Since this has come up a couple of times now, in one of the early SBS's Oda made a very detailed sketch of how a real life flintlock works, and explained that some pirates used to carry as many as 5 or 6 at a time, since they could only shoot once. But in OP, he decided it wasn't worth the effort of drawing multiple guns and keeping track of shots, so he just kept the aesthetic of flintlocks, while giving them multiple shots, simply stating: "[...] they have been improved, so that they can shoot any number of times. Scary." TLDR: guns in OP are the typical Oda move of doing extensive research & then immediately choosing to ignore it (because Rule of Cool)
