There could have been a scene in the anime that matches this too, but when falling back into the sea from the sky, just like the anime, the octopus balloon loses air quicker than expected, so the Merry crashes into the sea. I bring it up because in the manga, the panels right before focus on the keel as the ship crashes. What likely happened was that was the fatal crash that caused Merry’s keel to be injured.
