2024-06-15 22:06:38 +0000 UTCYeah i wished streaming services like crunchyroll or netflix do subtitles like actual fan-subs with using japanese onomatopoeia in text and name attack texts being animated.

2024-06-15 13:12:44 +0000 UTCi have watched the first half/500ish ep's of one piece like, say, roughly at least six times by now since 2010. i NEVER NOTICED THAT IN THE ED, or franky's parents were pirates let alone that they abandoned him. these like split-second details, yo

2024-06-15 03:27:25 +0000 UTCIn the manga, the actual context of Tom's speech pattern is that he always uses the word "DON!" or "do it with a DON!" --- so like, "if you're doing something, do it with a DON! (instead of resolutely like the anime translated it...same idea but yeah)

2024-06-14 17:47:48 +0000 UTCjust because there's some vague similarity between the two doesn't mean that's where the inspiration came from. It has never been stated by Oda that this is the case.

2024-06-14 10:52:46 +0000 UTCInsane how you can go to literally hating a character to loving a character so fast and wow didn't know they showed the Shadow of Merry π

2024-06-14 10:27:12 +0000 UTCwow, cool that you bring up Tom's "do it with a don" that's actually the fansub I remember wayback 2006 when Toei doesn't yet simultaneously releasing an official english subs. Fansubbers do theirs when japanese raw version comes out along with awesome fonts... Crunchyroll or Toei translates it with just "resolutely"

2024-06-14 10:06:08 +0000 UTCI might be misremembering, but I think "Oro Jackson" supposed to be references to Gold Roger's name & title: "Oro" gold in spanish, & "Jackson" after the "King" of Pop (Michael Jackson). Then there's also the reference to "The Pillars of the Earth" like someone else mentioned, but also "Thomas the Tank Engine" => Puffing Tom

2024-06-14 09:30:44 +0000 UTCThree quick & totally insignificant clarifications. Tom ends most his sentences in "do it with a Don", as in the onomatopoeia Don(/Bang) that you often see in manga. His tattoo is similar to, but not the same one as, the Arlong Pirates'. And most importantly W reaction!

2024-06-14 09:07:52 +0000 UTCThe montage of them putting all the hard work during those 10 years is so emotional for some reason. Man, i really love how subtle the little dots are connected, like Pauli, Kiwi and Mozu, and even Yokozuna learning the front crawl. Franky forcing a reaction out of Blueno especially that Oda has establish he's the "iron body" guy is a great show of his power.

2024-06-14 08:46:37 +0000 UTCFun fact, now that you're at 250, Tom is based on "Tom Builder", from the novel "The Pillars of the Earth", who: - is a mason and architect that dreams of building a grand cathedral - has a biological son named Alfred & adopts another "son" named "Jack" - faces numerous challenges and conflicts with powerful figures - tought all his knowledge to his 2 pupils/sons, before he gets killed - has 1 of his 2 pupils (adoptive son Jack) finish his dream for him So yeah, as others have said, "Oro" means Gold, though I also love the sea serpent tie-in, and the "Jackson" part (which also could, considering the last story beat, be read as "Jack's son") likely comes from this novel.

2024-06-14 08:30:03 +0000 UTCi think it more likely that oro come from spanish oro mean gold and jackspon is a name so maybe a relative of gold roger ?

2024-06-14 08:15:43 +0000 UTCThanks for the episode! Interesting discussion too. Regarding the name Oro Jackson, I always thought it was rather because Oro means "Gold" in Spanish/Italian, but the idea of greatness etc would still be there either way.
VongoGai
2024-06-14 07:52:52 +0000 UTC"Oro" means gold in Spanish, so it might be a reference to Roger's full name. Idk about the "Jackson" part, maybe Oda just thought it sounded cool. Btw it's cool how Franky was the one to finally make one of the CP9 budge just a little. They seemed so untouchable until now, Blueno was kinda sweating for a minute there.
