I always get super nostalgic during the scene where Katara is slicing up the dude in the vine suit with the sharp wave attacks because thats one of her attacks in one of the ATLA ps2 games. So many memories getting stuck trying to collect pentapuss'.

Your swamp theory makes me wonder if the reason these guys are all there is perhaps because they are all people who were lured to the swamp by visions of their lost loved ones and couldn't bring themselves to leave them or something. Or maybe descendants of such people.
