yeah canutes fighting an uphill battle. it took us hundreds of years to reach a pretty peaceful era ourselves. hes fighting a culture that only knows violence and blood as a tradition. hes the only person that even believe in his cause. Thorfinn cant change the world with his "true warrior" stance. he can only prevent himself from being lost in the bloodshed. Canute is trying to change it for the vikings as a whole. Obviously its a bloody path but our world today is built off a bloody path too. Except, instead of one person trying to change it, it came through multiple generations of work. Thorfinn wishes for an ideal world using idealistic methods. Canute wishes for an ideal world using realistic methods.

2023-06-06 14:22:39 +0000 UTCi disagree with you guy's take about canutes "plan" not making sense. in order to achieve his goal of creating a utopia he will need resources and military might. both of which are acquired by unfortunately shedding blood and he recognizes this, thats why when he became the king he wanted to decrease the amount of unnecessary blood shedding by making new laws. like the law that prohibits viking soldiers in his army from pillaging after a victory even though its viking tradition (pillaging includes killing, raping, and enslaving innocent people on the losing side) . he also prohibited duels. if canute wasnt king the amount of unnecessary blood shed and enslaved people would be way higher. with todays standards and morals what he is doing is terrible but i feel like its ridicules to judge someone from the 1000s with todays standards and morals. i think what hes doing is way better then king swyen and other kings before him endlessly fighting wars just to increase their wealth and power.
