Impel down was heavily inspired by Dante’s Inferno by the levels of torment/hell. I don’t think that this is a spoiler cause you are already passed a couple of levels deep in the arc.

2024-12-26 15:47:54 +0000 UTCI know people often bring up Dante's Inferno this arc, given the obvious parallels with the different levels of hell and their distinctive punishments. When it comes to the theming of each level though, it imo seems to moreso draw more from Chinese hell (Diyu) or Buddhist hell with its 18 levels (which also appear in Journey to the West, though the order is different). Such as Level 1 mirroring Diyu's Hell of Mountains & Trees of Knives or Level 2 being the Hell of Beasts (though obviously a level full of fiery beasts or a pit of fire are not novel concepts unique to just 1 mythology). Yet, I do think that the influence of Dante’s Divine Comedy remains compelling (and not just for the hilarious suggestion that Buggy is Luffy's Virgilio lol but) in the context of the World Government... however, rather for its deuteragonist: Virgilio. Every island in the series tends to have a name with clear meaning or inspiration, but "Enies" in Enies Lobby is one of the very few that is not obvious right off the bat. Well, at least until you consider Dante's Divine Comedy, where he narrates his journey through Hell & Purgatory, guided by Virgilio, the Roman poet who wrote the Aeneid, which leads us to said story's protagonist – Aeneas. Phonetically, "Enies" (エニエス, E-ni-e-su) closely resembles the Japanese transliteration of "Aeneas" (アイネアス, A-i-ne-a-su), who is celebrated in Roman mythology as the first true hero of Rome, the forefather of the Roman people, and by extension Roman law, aligning it perfectly with Enies Lobby – the epicenter of the World Government's "justice". Aeneas' tale parallels the World Government's origin, as he recounts the fall of Troy as this cosmic apocalyptic tragedy (blurring the lines between fact and legend) that destroyed his homeland, but set the stage for his descendants Romulus & Remus (= Celestial Dragons?) to build Rome. Both being powerful regimes that were founded on a grand narrative that mythologized their origins, born from chaos, to legitimize their authority through law & order, by casting themselves as bringers of stability. Or maybe I'm schizo-posting & imagining all this, while the actual reasoning is that Oda thought it was funny to name it "Penis Lobby", but his editors wouldn't let him. Whatever tho, happy holiday y'all!
