In the manga it is explained that Jinshi has regular obligations every two weeks, for which he takes long hot baths and burns incense the day before, as to purify himself. Maomao soon shakes the thought off as the individuals who undergo purifications tend to be those allowed to carry out religious ceremonies (e.g. individuals of noble birth). And Jinshi being a eunuch, would not be allowed to conduct such religious rituals.

It's somewhat coincidental he happened to be here to talk to her, especially as if he never started raising questions with his supervisors, he wouldn't have had a demotion to be stuck tending to the archives...

2025-02-05 23:42:16 +0000 UTCI think the key to understanding how Jinshi's secret is, indeed, a secret is the fact that each part of the palace is so separated in function and even within these functions, people are separated by class. The rear palace people who might interact with Jinshi the Eunuch, do rarely leave the grounds. The servants might, but certainly not through areas frequented by Jinshi in his royal persona. And even if they did, they hide their faces and certainly do not get a good hard look. The few of noble birth high enough that they may occasionally spot the elusive prince during ceremonies are not allowed anywhere near the rear palace. It is highly likely that most people within the palace walls have never even gotten a close look at their own emperor's face, much less his "sickly" brother. Maomao has several times denied herself any speculation as to the discrepancies there, because she doesn't want to get involved. But she would have no reason to suspect a royal, just a noble of some sort. 😊

2025-02-03 15:08:50 +0000 UTCalso concerning how public Jinshi's "real" identity is, keep in mind that Lakan, who seems to hold a pretty high rank and works in the outer palace, had to hint at knowing about Jinshi's status as opposed to acting like it was something he's expected to know

2025-02-03 12:14:41 +0000 UTCso i know i said there is no filler in this series but the scene where Jinshi walks through the courtyard with Maomao in his arms was added for the anime, the only thing we know is that he did carry her at some point but don't take the details of how that played out too seriously
