Maomao's adoptive father seems quite a rarity, seeing how medical education from the West sounds to be rare even among non-eunuchs.

2025-02-26 12:10:05 +0000 UTCI agree with Iris: I always thought that the doctor story explains why the doctor is so relatively incompetent: to be a doctor in the rear palace, you have to be a eunuch. Not many top doctors would probably be willing to get that done for that non-powerful position

2025-02-26 11:17:27 +0000 UTCbeyond any future plotlines, both stories told in this episode are pretty efficient world building, the quack doctorβs story is the first time we hear about how one might end up working as a eunuch in the rear palace (other than Maomaoβs adoptive dad who became a eunuch specifically because he was one of the few people capable of performing a C-section), same for Pairin and the system in the brothels
