Well, even in the caravan the merchants were depicted as quite brown with even arab facial features like the noses on some of the female merchants, however the royalty/envoy are white with very european features.

Maomao DID speculate it was the sewers being backed up because Shisui said it smelled weird in the North, where she does her bug catching. It was most definitely Concubine Jin's body that was smelling and causing the mushrooms to grow. Also, that weird red poison mushroom from the previous episode is real! I had to look it up. It's called the Trichoderma cornu-damae or fire poison coral. Very interesting, look it up if you're a nerd like me. :D
