2024-07-21 03:22:32 +0000 UTCThat’s so cool, I never realized. I always thought that scene was a little off - like Zoro why are you checking your blade? You worried it suddenly disappeared? Eventually I guessed it was just to make him look cool and ready for battle but this makes way more sense.

2024-07-21 02:02:44 +0000 UTCidk if you guys noticed but what zoro did there is an old samurai practice called ''kincho''. with it he makes a vow that cannot be broken. it shows his personal oath and commitment

2024-07-20 21:46:49 +0000 UTCYooo you are smart guys, as always, close to true, and I can't confirm where your theories was right or wrong, but yeah that's good way of thoughts for sure. Now, Vice Admiral Sakazuki is the good name to remember, he is clearly awful, killed so many innocent people for some justice.
Jack Shadow
2024-07-20 21:30:10 +0000 UTClet them cook with their theories and speculations... it's still impressive either way when most of us just binged all of these episodes without thorough discussion every episode... anyway my point is, we're not special just because we're ahead than them... we just watched or read earlier than others, that's all there's to it

2024-07-20 10:55:50 +0000 UTCI don't really have an issue with the performances in the dub, I think most of the VAs are really good VA's, I just watched this scene in dub and for every moment I thought "Hey that was pretty good" there were 3 moments that made me physically cringe. Not because I inherently hate English dubs, I just cant stand many of the stylistic choices made for One Piece's dub. Be it translations I don't like, (awkward in-between words added to fill space "Yeah- Bring it on!" instead of just "Bring it on!" for example) poor tone, (Luffy has very different vocal tones depending on the scenario in the Japanese dub and I just don't think the English dub gets his serious moments done well). Luffy's voice is grating at the best of times and completely tonally wrong at the worst of times for me. That isn't a sleight against the VA, its the fact that he, understandably because of when it was made, sounds like a Saturday morning cartoon character even when things are serious. The "Bring it on" part of "Yeah- Bring it on!" was probably the best delivered line by her in the series. I was a fan of "Let it ring!" from Skypeia as well but on rewatch its not as good as my nostalgia would have me think. I will absolutely grant that Robin does a great job in this scene and overall the Dub isn't awful (I watched 200 episodes of it when I first started watching One Piece) It just feels like there's something missing for me as well as the things that I've pointed out that I don't like.

2024-07-20 09:54:49 +0000 UTC@Mathew Gilroy When people talk about pacing they are usually talking about the issues with the adaptation which is not something Oda has control over I was just making that distinction.

2024-07-20 06:13:52 +0000 UTCFrom the Walk in episode 274 up to “I want to live!” here, that might be the emotional high point of my favorite arc in the series, and I’m caught up to the current chapter in the manga. The flag burning was *iconic*. And I love how none of the Straw Hats even *flinch*. They don’t give a shit about you, or CP9, or the World Government, or “170 countries”. You destroyed Robin’s life, you are their Number One Fucking Enemy. Are they the biggest pirate crew? No. Are they the strongest crew? Well, at least not yet. But fuck if there’s anyone more loyal.

2024-07-20 04:17:29 +0000 UTC291-292 is still a filler... anything that isn't manga canon is a filler https://www.animefillerlist.com/shows/one-piece

2024-07-20 03:48:47 +0000 UTCAgreed, and although I prefer Luffy's Japanese va to the dub actor in almost every instance, I like the dub delivery better when he shouts "BRING IT ON!!" at Spandum. That gets me everytime as well.

2024-07-20 03:46:03 +0000 UTCHey Carson and Linsey, you can now watch the next 2 openings. 7: (ウィーアー! 〜7人の麦わら海賊団篇〜)" by the 7-nin no Mugiwara Kaizokudan (7人の麦わら海賊団) (eps 279-283) 8: "Crazy Rainbow" by Tackey & Tsubasa (タッキー&翼) (eps 284-325) How ever the previous opening 6 6: "BRAND NEW WORLD" by D-51 (eps 264-278) You will want to wait till after watching 290. There is a one frame scene, that people are on edge about so just to be safe. Also 291-292 are not filler, they are " New year's Specials" feel free to watch them if you want. They take place in an alternate reality. Fun little episodes.
Artemis
2024-07-20 02:51:52 +0000 UTCWild statement, I completely disagree here. Robin is the only English VA I consistently like more than the Japanese; this scene specifically I'll wholeheartedly say she did better if only by a smidge. You def have a bias cause the passion from her is palpable and heartfelt.

2024-07-20 01:47:08 +0000 UTCI love that Luffy basically showed to Robin, that all of them are willing to be enemies of the World (Government) if Robin think she's an enemy of the world...what a strong message to send to someone who never trusted anyone her whole life. Luffy showed Robin that it's them vs the world. a bigger version of Luffy giving his hat to Nami, letting her know that she got someone to lean on and he consider her his treasure. Luffy is a dumbass but his leadership skills in terms of inspiring people is top tier.

I also wanted to elaborate my vision on Robin's acts since I felt they expected a "redemption arc" from Robin regarding Alabasta. The post arc discussion will be great to have their opinions on characters development and especially Robin. It will last for at least 2 hours with all the things that had and will happen ahah

2024-07-20 00:28:06 +0000 UTCYep. I just wanted to say those words since their comments on Robin from Alabasta. They were very skeptical at first but still within reason. This far in the story. They have to realize that One piece is not only a story about good vs evil. Its about the decisions a man will do when faced difficult situations and how it effect other people. Unlike Spandam 😅 most of the main villains have reasons for their actions. Reasons that depends on the viewer/fan if they will understand enough to forgive or not.

2024-07-20 00:26:30 +0000 UTCFor me, that only explain that hiding from WG and seeking poneglyph was why she had accepted to be part of a criminal organization scheming to takeover a country. But she literally never did a "bad" thing who needed to be forgiven imo. Which it's not the case of a character like Bon Clay who sacrificed himself at the end of the arc as a redemption for example. All she did back in Alabasta was : - Let intentionally Vivi and Igaram followed her to discover who run Baroque Works - Saved Igaram - Gave an eternal pose to go straight to Alabasta stopping the rebellion with no reports (it was the unluckies and Mr. 3 who report them on Whisky Peak and Little Garden iirc) - Saved Luffy - Don't gave Pluton whereabouts to Crocodile by lying to him - Plus we can assume since she had the water on her than she intended to try to stop Crocodile as soon as she knew the poneglyph location and get a chance She also have not killed Pell when she fought him. To be fair on this point, maybe she really try but we all know this guy is immortal anyway lol. Without her, Mr 2 & 1 would have still cause a lot of civilian damage in the port town and the war would have still occured but the human losses would have been way worst with Crocodile winning. And of course we know now, why she just can't warned the WG or the marines and run away. Even warning the king before would have been useless since they had no proofs and Crocodile was a warlord at this time. She would had just revealed her betrayal to delayed the plan at best. Ok she let it happen but try her best to avoid the worst!

2024-07-20 00:11:43 +0000 UTCActually i prefer CR's translation in this case lol, it makes him seem like he just discovered the enemy of robin, rather then be something past tense that he already knows.
Artemis
2024-07-20 00:05:09 +0000 UTCI deffinitly would have loved a bit of a longer discussion on this episode. Some kind of moment of reflection on the series up to this point but i feel like carson was kind of showing signs of fatigue or maybe hes just tired. This episode is emotionally draining thats for sure. Linsey discussed the impact of the episode pretty well though in the short time they had.
Artemis
2024-07-20 00:03:33 +0000 UTCI was hoping someone would bring that up otherwise I was gonna. This really annoys me. The English translation of the manga even goes "I understand Robin's enemy very well!". (Even the old school fansubs went "I'm well aware of Robin's enemies.") These anime subs change the nuance of this serious reply delivered in a serious manner by a usually unserious character; not something where you should be "taking liberites" IMHO.

2024-07-19 23:46:18 +0000 UTCThis is the reason why Robin is forgiven by the fandom from her previous actions. Also the reason why Robin belongs at the top of One piece best characters.

2024-07-19 22:56:47 +0000 UTCI love the fact that none of the crew members even think about it for a second before literally declaring a war against the whole world. Before they were just pirates but now they're direct enemies of the world government. Luffy said you leaving us because of this burden you carry, then we'll share this burden with you. One of the greatest character moments in one piece.

2024-07-19 21:01:29 +0000 UTCLindsay spot on, it's why Luffy is my favorite character. Straight up declares war on the entire world for his friends, screaming at Spandam to fucking bring it on. Removing any barriers Robin has put between herself and the crew. Oda cooked (again)

2024-07-19 20:12:15 +0000 UTCJust a nit-picky sidenote, but Crunchyroll took the creative liberty here to make Luffy say: "I now understand well the identity of Robin's enemy" when the original is "I understand Robin's enemy very well" (Robin no teki wa yoku wakatta)

2024-07-19 19:53:09 +0000 UTCSomething I think you guys have probably realized by now is that the more you learn about the One Piece world the more appreciation you have for past events. There are times when you don't fully understand something about a characters motivations and then it all makes sense at some point. After learning Robins backstory here it makes all those moments where she refused to be saved make so much more sense. I think a lot of One Piece feels this way too, going through your first time you may not understand why people have such a love for the show and then each arc it feels like it just compounds on how much there is to love about past arcs. Not to bag on Naruto too hard, its just an example I think a lot of people know, and the one I'm most familiar with (Bleach has its huge plot hole too). There are times where something is revealed mid way into a story that kinda ruins a part of what had come before. Finding out who Naruto's Dad is completely guts the entire premise behind the initial part of Naruto for me and it just feels really cheap. There isn't anything in One Piece that makes me feel that way though. There are times where Oda may not have had the complete idea done at the very onset of its introduction but, for reason ill leave vague, it doesn't bother me too much. (Trying to keep this Boldcast friendly, fight me in the replies or discord XD) To wrap this up, I know so many people talk about how Oda is the God of foreshadowing and, like Boldcast have talked about, it isn't always the case that he knows everything in advance, sometimes he's just really good at leaving pieces behind and building cool stuff out of them later. Calling your shots and having the ability to work things into a masterpieces after the fact are certainly different but I wouldn't say either one is particularly more impressive than the other. They're both things that Oda is really good at and as a viewer/reader we benefit when he has both of those skills sharpened so I don't really see a point in arguing about which is more impressive. (Sorry if this was written poorly, I wrote most of this out and then the page refreshed and I lost it all so I was kinda just stumbling back through it as best I could) Jesus, the yappening
ChocoBoshi
2024-07-19 19:51:51 +0000 UTCthe dub VA didn't put emotion on the scene. Trying not to spoil but the only dub I like is the main villain of the most recent completed anime arc lol

2024-07-19 19:45:29 +0000 UTCThis episode is sooo good, it makes me bawl everytime. Fun fact: all the "D." people we've seen tend to accept their death with a smile or laughter. Roger went out smiling, Luffy smiled when he was about to be executed by Buggy and now Saul died laughing. They don't fear death.
Kintama
2024-07-19 19:45:15 +0000 UTCOP is the best at these big crescendo moments. Pacing can be a bit iffy while Oda sets up his little chess pieces but it's so worth it in the end.

2024-07-19 19:26:03 +0000 UTCFun fact, the motion Zoro does with his sword at 21:52 is a special samurai gesture called "kincho." When a samurai makes a vow, they will draw their sword a bit and then sheathe it again, making sure the metals hit each other and produce a sound. This signifies that the vow must not be broken, and the samurai will give their life to fulfill the task.
