Seriously, he has someone there who loves him dearly but out of his blind "she's like a sister to me" attitude, doesn't realize that she wants to be with him, and based on the way she acts, possibly even in the ways he's claimed not to want to be doing to get out of respect. Even in chapter 17 they argued like a married couple over the fabric for Natani's robes. I honor your "brotherly" respect for her Eric, but your killing her, and us to.
