2024-08-30 17:09:12 +0000 UTCWhen I was rewatching this episode I kind of had the idea that Aang was making the same mistake he made 100 years ago, running away into a storm, but in reality he's making a completely different mistake through the same set of actions. 100 years ago he was running away to try to escape his responsibilities all together, he had hoped that if he just left, the responsibility would disappear. Now he isn't running away from his responsibility, in his mind he is confronting it head on. So while the method of making the mistake in both cases was to physically separate himself, first from the people putting the responsibility on him and second from the people he is worried the responsibility he has might endanger. The mistake itself is different and does show a consistency in character but not because he is making the same mistake twice. I really like when writers use this types of symmetry to show growth or change in characters. Aang is basically presented with the same problem and he comes to a different conclusion but in both cases the conclusion he comes to isn't the right one.
