You do have to remember that these are 23 minute episode with not a whole lot of wiggle room when it comes to exposition. Leaving it ambiguous could also serve another purpose though. Where as you dislike Roku's character because of how you chose to interpret the show, other's ,like those who responded to you, interpret it differently. Whether you like or dislike that sort of thing is up to you but I think it makes a character more real, we don't usually hear someone's every motive behind a single decision, much less every motive behind every decision. Especially as a kids show it gives kids a chance to grow and learn to form their own outlook on things rather than learning to expect to have every reason laid out for them. After rewatching the episode its pretty clear to me that he wasn't just fighting to save his home, he was saving the people that were evacuating until Sozin appeared and it became clear that they could easily stop the crisis together. The only reason he dies is because of Sozin's betrayal, not because he got greedy trying to save his home. Toph mentions that there are 100's of buried buildings, if you're that powerful and you decide to run away rather than at least trying to save 100's of family's homes when, with Sozin, you clearly have the ability to, is that not far worse?

2024-09-19 15:59:20 +0000 UTCI was about to say something similiar actually. The way I always interpreted was that it wasn't that Roku wanted to protect his home island just for the sake of protecting it but instead he tried to stop a natural distaster that could have killed a great amount of people. And when he got all messed up from all the gases that came out of the volcano, Zosin's betrayl in that moment was what sealed the deal and I think Roku sort of couldn't take it anymore. When in that moment his life long best friend didn't try to safe his life. Plus he was extremely old. The take on the dragon rescuing him I've never see someone point out before, thats very interesting. But I feel like that Fang sensed in some way that Roku decided that this would be the moment where it all should end for him. It also makes much sense story wise since Aang and Zuko are the ones who can balance out the friendship that was broken up in a past lifetime.

If two of the greatest fire benders at the time acknowledged that this volcano was deadly... it needed to be stopped! A potential seaquake, tsunami would have resulted if the volcano was active!! Hence, it was more about saving the people across the world rather than his home! Cheers,

I know this is a “kids” show, but I hate people who act based on their emotions, give other people too many chances, and Roku protecting his home at the end… it made no sense, home isn’t a physical location on earth, it’s just a practical thing, a house or apartment somewhere, and your family and friends are more like your home. Just such an outdated way of thinking in my opinion. I know Roku’s actions and personality are more “human”, but as the Avatar, he’s supposed to do what’s right for the world, objectively and without compromise, and he didn’t. Heck, even he dragon could’ve either saved him, or continued living, and either kept the dragons alive, or tried fighting Sozin’s dragon, and burn down the fire nation, their military at least. That’s just my take on it :)
