One Piece Episode 356 UNCUT REACTION!

I think Absalom is intended to come off as a complete creepster. I realise it can be challenging to discuss this type of topic when it's supposed to be a funny show and that anime and manga tend to use the pervy guy trope for humour. Pervy behaviours are anyway kind of weird in Japan from an outsider's perspective. I think even many Japanese people realise that some of these behaviours just go way over the line (I'm referring to real-life stuff outside of the anime sphere). And yeah, sometimes it gets very uncomfortable when you take a step back, even in the comedy setting and I think there is a section of anime fans who would prefer if that was toned or not done at all. In fact, this kind of reminds me of a bunch of ongoing revolting court cases/trials in the US, France, etc. I don't think Oda is trying to show his behaviour as being healthy in any way, though, so being weirded out/creeped out by Absalom is probably an expected thing for most. I'm not saying I appreciate those parts personally, far from it, but I do believe it's done to some extent to criticise some of these behaviours.

2024-10-04 15:31:13 +0000 UTCone piece does this a lot it makes lite of very serious topics, like the stuff with enies lobby. having an unfair and one sided justice system, they said that enies lobby has 100% conviction rate and yet its passed by like its not a big deal. one piece has a way to show the world through luffys eyes as nothing is taken too seriously.

2024-10-04 08:28:20 +0000 UTCIt was a joke but I know the reason he held back some restraint when discussing those kinds of topics. In any case there is no backlash and no one is angry so its all good.

2024-10-04 01:18:31 +0000 UTCI don't mind Elfen lied, but one thing I do not like about it is animal cruelty. That kind of material to me is far more worse then fanservice/ecchi in any context. In OP's case its just played off as humerous so not that much of an issue but in that series its almost as if the intention behind the scenes was to display some type of goreporn related to animals.
Artemis
2024-10-03 22:19:54 +0000 UTCI mean it really depends on the audience and the way they view it to be either a detriment to their experience or something good. The great thing about "art" is there is no limitations to it. The muse is an empty vessel, and she speaks soundly. There are manga like "To love RU", which generally has a great story and good characters, but its entire focus is on ecchi fanservice, to the point to where the author is actually pretty creative with how he incorporates alot of fanservice moments. I mean just think about the whole "boy gets miniaturized and enters the girls shower room" "invisible virus in school breaks out and everyone has to take their clothes off" "the classic "someone Stoll my panties" or any number of these tropes are used almost in an artistic fashion, that its quite mind boggling the kinds of multiple scenario’s that Saki Hasemi comes up with and the art by Yabuki Kentarou is very expressive. So, you can say that in this type of story, its actually unique in a way and serves to be the driving creativity behind the series dealing with the rom/comedy elements. Obviously carson and linsey would never touch this kind of thing and that’s completely fine. Or like another manga that comes to mind is Futari Ecchi which is like a sex educational instruction manual which is pretty interesting because it relates to real world situations. But I am just saying depending upon how ecchi, sexual situations and nudity is utilized, it can be interesting/funny or downright a distraction to the core theme and representation of the story like one of the things I can't stand is when you have a serous more mature drama and it tries to insert heavy nudity and fanservice moments for the purposes of titillating the audience like disappearing clothes when characters are engaged in combat, when that isn't its focus at all. Shonen for example the focus is on the younger demographics of action and heroic characters becoming respective heroes to their world, so when you use fanservice, you have to use it for gags/comedy otherwise it overstays its welcome imo. Like fairy tale for example I think took things a bit to over the top for its demographic. But anyways i have chatted long enough about this topic so ill end it here lol.

2024-10-03 18:31:19 +0000 UTCI don't find overt, one sided perviness in anime to be funny in pretty much any context. I think it works much better as a gag when the overtly pervy character is rejected or doesn't perpetrate any acts that cross basic personal boundaries. I think this is why in most cases Sanji is still a likeable or redeemable character, despite his perviness he never crosses that line. Absalom is absolutely not *just* a perv in his depiction, the acts portrayed are nothing short of sexual harassment and assault, especially in Nami's case in the bath it's an absolutely reprehensible act. Its very hard for me take these as gags when they are portrayed this way. If instead of grabbing and licking Robin on the ship and then spying on and assaulting Nami in the bath, he instead attempted to spy on her, failed and then saw her with a towel around her body and that is why he decided he wanted to marry her, I could see him being more of a gag character. That just simply isn't the case, he's a sex offender whose offenses we see on screen and are suppose to laugh at them? The character being intentionally hateable or not, portraying these types of acts as something to laugh about just feels weird to me Like I said, I don't tend to like perviness or pervy characters at all because, from my view, we are supposed to assume that these character, if given their way, would all do what Absalom does in his portrayal. The simple fact that they don't, due only to lack of opportunity, doesn't make them much more redeemable as a written character to me.

2024-10-03 18:11:53 +0000 UTC@menofhorror, Not trying to absolve or defend Absalom and his action as a whole. My respect for him, along with Spanda, are lower than the Earth’s fucking core. I just think it’s obvious that Oda is using tropes and chicles he knows in horror stories and subverts them by creating a character like Lola, who pursues after the sexual deviant, Absalom, like a Looney Tune gag.

2024-10-03 16:22:34 +0000 UTCThat doesnt make him any less of a shit character.
menofhorror
2024-10-03 15:54:39 +0000 UTCBut Robin was handcuffed and couldn’t do anything to fight back Spanda. Nami didn’t know who or what was happening with her encounter with Absalom. So beating a defenseless woman and SA’ing are two different things to you? It seems the same to me in the anime’s context and both Absalom and Spanda still have comedic moments but are still treated like major villains on their own arcs. I’m pretty sure Oda just wanted use horror chicles and tropes he read or watch and incorporated it into his way into this arc. You can be critical and entitled with your own opinion, you’re not wrong. I’m just saying there is another way of looking at it. As for Toei, they just pad it to fit the timeframe.
Monkey D. Lucci
2024-10-03 15:30:36 +0000 UTCWith this topic I think much more care should be put into it. Yes spanda beat and harmed robin but people get beat up all the time in shonen. A better example of someone getting beat that would require more care and thought would be a domestic or parent child relationship. Certain topics should demand a higher level of writing than what we got with Absalom imo. Oda is capable of truly nuanced and thoughtful writing but he really missed the mark on this one tbh. Also toei made it way worse as well.
Ty
2024-10-03 15:22:44 +0000 UTC@Ty, yeah but with Spanda, he was major antagonist yet also a gag character. He physically harmed Robin, but there still gags of him being incompetent and beaten up. With Absalom, he’s obviously the rival pervert for Sanji, hence the matchup. I also think Absalom wanting to marry Nami is a reference to Bride of Frankenstein, which is a horror cliche, i.e., a villainous monster wanting love from a living human woman. The same goes for Nami’s Bath scene, its a cliched thing in 80s horror films. EDIT: Just realized the wedding scene reminds me of wedding at the climax of Beetlejuice. The first movie.
Monkey D. Lucci
2024-10-03 15:15:20 +0000 UTCDoesn’t really feel like that’s the point. When throughout the whole arc he does this stuff but is treated like a gag character

2024-10-03 14:41:40 +0000 UTCAs far as I could tell you're a relatively new commenter, so im just talking with you to help you understand what types of comments are frowned upon. I'm not asking you to remove either comment, I just noticed a pattern and wanted to ask that you not continue it. Future events are what is prohibited anything relating to past events (excluding for the purpose of alluding to or spoiling their relevance in the future) is fine. The issue is not with the content of the comment, just the principle.

Monkey D. Lucci
2024-10-03 14:10:23 +0000 UTCSo you just have no nuance whatsoever? You don’t look at a comment mentioning Franky’s bulge and think, he’s not bringing up anything story related or relevant to literally anything whatsoever, so there’s no point in leaving a comment?
Will.Har310
2024-10-03 14:10:16 +0000 UTCI feel that the perviness or ecchi character trope is supposed to taken as a childish characteristic trait. Like you mentioned onsen or bath house, in those scenarios, there would be a scene where a little boy is acting mischievous towards grown naked women and they would excuse it cuz it’s a child, they don’t know any better. With Go Nagai, I believe he did create the first ecchi manga series called Harenchi Gakuen (Shameless School), which apparently caused big controversy back in time, so much that Go Nagai made the situation even more controversial by killing off his lead and supporting characters by mob of people as ‘fuck you’ to the actual mob that were first mad at him. He would use that method afterwards with Devilman and so on and so forth. The funniest part is Harenchi Gakuen is one of the earliest manga serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump.

ChocoBoshi
2024-10-03 13:41:42 +0000 UTCI mean the Nami bath scene is an overuse 80s Horror trope in and of itself.
Monkey D. Lucci
2024-10-03 13:35:39 +0000 UTCI think there’s a clear difference between using perviness or sexual situations as a comedy gag like in DB, OP, or Naruto, and as a recurring element in dark manga/anime. Like Berserk is fucking dark with it, but then theres works like Redo of Healer and Gushing over Magical Girls, where it’s fundamentally the main part of the series. As of now, I saw and read scanlatons of manga labeled as ‘borderline H,’ meaning the manga hasn’t taken a full step to be pornographic/hentai, but its labeled as smut or erotic. Those types are usually approved to be adapted into anime.

2024-10-03 13:23:29 +0000 UTCFranky is not a great example for men not being fan serviced, we get plenty of bulge shots later down the road.
Will.Har310
2024-10-03 13:07:47 +0000 UTCI think if a villain’s whole gimmick is that they’re pervy, the author shouldn’t be afraid to cross some line, the villains should be doing villainous things. Some villains are genocidal maniacs who slaughter many many people, some villains are rapist. If someone thinks this is going too far, never read/watch Berserk.
Will.Har310
2024-10-03 13:04:07 +0000 UTCYeah in the manga its more of Absalom being a pervert and sexual harasser is weird but works (in the context of character even though he is a terrible character). I think it works because he is a villain in a gothic horror themed story line. He isn't supposed to be liked and we are supposed to hate him. The anime leaning into the perverted stuff though, like dragging out a 2 min scene of a sexual assault is just mehhh
Martin Hagen
2024-10-03 11:55:26 +0000 UTCI mean yeah 𝐀𝐛𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐦 is obv meant to be hated, but the extent to which it's displayed in the anime (can't speak for the manga), combined with its tone, rather makes me 𝐡𝐚𝐭𝐞 that Oda included this whole 𝐬𝐮𝐛𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐭 in the first place W Usopp moment tho

2024-10-03 10:12:15 +0000 UTCThe goat of fan service is Akira Toriyama, no one can ever replace Master Roshi. In the 1980's specifically there was ALOT of various forms of nudity being depicted in anime and manga and some that are quite offensive. One piece is tame by comparison. You also did not have censorship so you can see a womens breasts on full display. You would even see naked little kids that was non-sexual of course running around taking baths and stuff, so alot of different standards existed in those years that obvously have very different cultural views today, especially in the usa. But I do think a big part of the sexism and fanservice of one piece comes from that generation. Go nagai was kind of pioneer of pervy slapstick humor in the 1970's.

2024-10-03 09:39:02 +0000 UTCYeah, Absalom doing that to Robin and Nami put me off at the start of the arc, It's good thing there is still a lot more to like about Thriller Bark than negative aspects of it, and honestly, I give One Piece more leeway than other anime just coz im attached to the series emotionally (and Oda rewards you for sticking to the story). I would say though even though Oda does put in some fanservice here and there (I do not care for it), it is pretty far in between, and One Piece is still for me one of the few (Shonen) series that write women characters with actual personalities and layers...but fckin Toei dials up the fanservice to 11, jfc...that's why I'm so happy we are getting a remake of One Piece.

2024-10-03 09:38:22 +0000 UTCI love how minute it was that everyone ran away from Perona's ghosts except for Zoro stood firmly and never gave the ghosts his back, took it all up front, staying on point with his "Scars on the back are a swordsman's greatest shame" quote.

2024-10-03 08:49:05 +0000 UTCI quite honestly love this arc for a lot of reasons, its really one of the funniest arcs, but this creepy perv stuff was the reason I despised it for a long time.
Dan Bax
2024-10-03 08:38:54 +0000 UTCRegarding the discussion: the absolom stuff is still considered (as far as I saw) a low point in op for most of the Fandom (yes even in Japan). And as unashamedly pervy as oda is, often the anime dials it up some notches. As usual I suppose. Oda married a Nami cosplayer ffs 😅

2024-10-03 08:01:33 +0000 UTCYeah unfortunately there's lots of creepy perv "humor" in this arc and most of it involves Absalom. Luckily you won't find anyone anywhere defending his ass. Fairly sure all fans unanimously agree that he's just a gross boring loser. As I'm sure you're aware, this is sadly what's seen as popular and acceptable humor for young boys in Japan.

2024-10-03 07:55:49 +0000 UTCI guess it's playing on the horror vibes of the invisible man but yeah Absalom is just... I sometimes prefer to think he doesn't exist because of what that brings to the story. I think it's one of those things that Oda kinda fumbles looking back on it and i get hating it altogether, it's ''atleast'' lightened by some comedy but it doesn't remove the creepiness factor. My only consolation is Lola giving him a hard time the same way he oversteps boundaries and forces himself. Both are yikes, just one is just way more than the other.
